The orienting properties of incompressible discotic nematic liquid crystals for creeping flows between converging and diverging planar walls (Jeffrey-Hamel) are analyzed using the Leslie-Ericksen theory. The dependence of director orientation on the reactive parameter and the flow kinematics is presented. Closed form stationary solutions for the director orientation are found when elastic effects are neglected. Stationary numerical solutions for the velocity and director fields using the full Leslie-Ericksen theory are presented. The director field in converging flow is characterized by azimuthal (radial) centerline orientation, by being asymmetric with respect to the azimuthal (radial) direction, and by having an allowed orientation range that spans two half-quadrants (full quadrants). In the limiting case of perfectly flat disk ( –) the flow-induced director orientation in converging flow is the azimuthal direction, while in diverging flow the director rotates by a full n radians. By reducing the vertex angle between the walls to vanishingly small values, converging flow solutions properly reduce to those of flow between parallel plates, but diverging flows are expected to lead to a new instability.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the cation‐exchange properties of a self‐assembled hybrid material towards trivalent ions, lanthanides (La3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, Yb3+) and Fe3+. The bis‐zwitterionic lamellar material was prepared by sol–gel process from only 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), succinic anhydride, and ethylenediamine. In ethanol heated under reflux, the exchange ethylenediammonium versus Ln3+ proved to be complete by complexometry measurements and elemental analyses, one Cl? ion per one LnIII remaining as expected for charge balance. In aqueous solution at 20 °C, the material was found to be selective towards lanthanide in spite of the similarity of their ionic radii. The cation uptake depends on the nature of the salt, the difference between two lanthanides reaching up to 20 % in some cases. Finally, ion‐exchange reaction with FeCl3 was chosen as a probe to get more information on the material after incorporation of trivalent ions. Based on Mössbauer spectroscopic investigations on the resulting material in conjunction with the XRD analysis of materials containing trivalent ions, a structural model was proposed to describe the incorporation of trivalent ions by exchange reaction within the original zwitterionic material.  相似文献

We theoretically study the relaxation of high energy single particle excitations into molecules in a system of attractive fermions in an optical lattice, both in the superfluid and the normal phase. In a system characterized by an interaction scale U and a tunneling rate t, we show that the relaxation rate scales as ~Ctexp[-αU(2)/t(2)ln(U/t)] in the large U/t limit. We obtain explicit expressions for the temperature and density dependent exponent α, both in the low temperature superfluid phase and the high temperature phase with pairing but no coherence between the molecules. We find that the relaxation rate decreases both with temperature and deviation of the fermion density from half filling. We show that quasiparticle and phase degrees of freedom are effectively decoupled within experimental time scales allowing for observation of ordered states even at high total energy of the system.  相似文献

We consider a Cantor-like set as a geometric projection of a Bernoulli process. P. Billingsley (1960) and C. Dai and S.J. Taylor (1994) introduced dimension-like indices in the probability space of a stochastic process. Under suitable regularity conditions we find closed formulae linking the Hausdorff, box and packing metric dimensions of the subsets of the Cantor-like set, to the corresponding Billingsley dimensions associated with a suitable Gibbs measure. In particular, these formulae imply that computing dimensions in a number of well-known fractal spaces boils down to computing dimensions in the unit interval endowed with a suitable metric. We use these results to generalize density theorems in Cantor-like spaces. We also give some examples to illustrate the application of our results.

Attrition-enhanced chiral symmetry breaking in crystals, known as Viedma deracemization, is a promising method for converting racemic solid phases into enantiomerically pure ones under non-equilibrium conditions. However, many aspects of this process remain unclear. In this study, we present a new investigation into Viedma deracemization using a comprehensive kinetic rate equation continuous model based on classical primary nucleation theory, crystal growth, and Ostwald ripening. Our approach employs a fully microreversible kinetic scheme with a size-dependent solubility following the Gibbs–Thomson rule. To validate our model, we use data from a real NaClO3 deracemization experiment. After parametrization, the model shows spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) under grinding. Additionally, we identify a bifurcation scenario with a lower and upper limit of the grinding intensity that leads to deracemization, including a minimum deracemization time within this window. Furthermore, this model uncovers that SMSB is caused by multiple instances of concealed high-order autocatalysis. Our findings provide new insights into attrition-enhanced deracemization and its potential applications in chiral molecule synthesis and understanding biological homochirality.  相似文献

The shear rate dependence of material functions such as shear viscosity (η) and the first normal stress difference (N1) were given and interpreted earlier by Kiss and Porter. Their widely accepted work revealed the possibility of having a negative minimum of N1 for polymeric liquid crystals. In this work, we disclose for the first time the evidence of two negative N1 minima on a sheared cellulosic lyotropic system. The lower shear rate minimum is ascribed to the uncoiling of the cholesteric helix, as theoretically predicted earlier. Our findings contribute also to the understanding of the other minimum already reported in the literature and attributed to the nematic director tumbling mode. Moreover, the elastic change that the LC‐HPC sample undergoes during the helix unwinding of the cholesteric structure is also by means of oscillatory measurements. This study is a contribution for the understanding of the structure‐properties relationship linked with the complex rheological behavior of chiral nematic cellulose‐based systems and may help to improve their further processing. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, a graphical characterization, in the decision space, of the properly efficient solutions of a convex multiobjective problem is derived. This characterization takes into account the relative position of the gradients of the objective functions and the active constraints at the given feasible solution. The unconstrained case with two objective functions and with any number of functions and the general constrained case are studied separately. In some cases, these results can provide a visualization of the efficient set, for problems with two or three variables. Besides, a proper efficiency test for general convex multiobjective problems is derived, which consists of solving a single linear optimization problem.  相似文献
