Thermodynamics and general relativity could determine the geometry of the universe

We introduce a suggestive model where certain quantities in Friedmann models are treated like their thermodynamic counterparts; temperature entropy, Gibbs energy, and so on. Within this model, changes in the symmetry of the universe are interpreted as first- or second-order phase transitions. The thermodynamics we introduce give us a new way of determining the geometry of the universe. By choosing a specific local equation of state (P=), we show that with respect to the thermodynamics we have introduced, it is always more advantageous for the universe to be in a Bianchi V (open) symmetric state.This essay received an honorable mention from the Gravity Research Foundation for the year 1986 — Ed.     

Real-Time PCR analysis of af4 and dek genes expression in acute promyelocytic leukemia t (15;17) patients

Among several newly identified oncogenes, dek and af4 are attractive targets for researchers interested with leukemia. In this study quantitative Real-Time RT-PCR technique was used to define alterations in expression of dek and af4 genes associated with acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) t (15; 17). RNA samples obtained from bone marrow aspirates of fourteen APL patients, cDNA portions were labelled with Syber Green 1 dye and LightCycler analysis have been performed. Expression changes in patients were found not significant in comparison to healthy donors for af4 (P = 0.192) and dek (P = 0.0895). We suggest that af4 gene may have a role in leukomogenesis restricted to lymphoblastic lineage; also further studies must carry on with a larger series of patients in order to understand the relationship between the dek gene and APL. Our study was the first attempt for analysing dek and af4 genes in APL t (15; 17) patients by quantitative Real-Time RT-PCR. This rapid and sensitive method could be used to screen these genes in different types of leukaemia.     

Random Walks On Finite Convex Sets Of Lattice Points

This paper examines the convergence of nearest-neighbor random walks on convex subsets of the lattices^d. The main result shows that for fixedd, O(²) steps are sufficient for a walk to get random, where is the diameter of the set. Toward this end a new definition of convexity is introduced for subsets of lattices, which has many important properties of the concept of convexity in Euclidean spaces.     

Morphology Control of Platinum Nanoparticles and their Catalytic Properties

Platinum nanoparticles with different morphology were prepared by reduction of K₂PtCl₄ solution in the presence of different capping polymers. It was found that the shapes and the sizes of the Pt nanocrystals resulted were related to the kind of capping polymer used. When poly(vinylpyrrolidon) (PVP), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (NIPA) and sodium poly(acrylate) (SPA) were used as capping agents, the dominant shapes of the Pt nanocrystals observed by transmission electron microscopy were hexagonal (62%), square (67%) and triangular (41%), respectively. The average sizes of Pt nanocrystals were 6.9, 13.6 and 14.6 nm for capping polymers of PVP, NIPA and SPA, respectively. The colloidal Pt nanoparticles with different morphologies were supported on -Al₂O₃ (1 wt.% Pt) and then their catalytic activity for NO reduction by CH₄ was tested in the 350–600°C temperature range. Additionally, the catalytic activities of these alumina-supported Pt nanocrystals were compared with a conventional catalyst having the average size of Pt particles of 2.4 nm. Over the alumina-supported Pt nanocrystals as compared with the conventional Pt/Al₂O₃, it was observed that the NO/CH₄ reaction yields to NH₃ and CO decreased significantly and on the other hand, the yield to N₂O increased. The experimental results are suggesting that the catalytic behavior can be tuned in a convenient way through the morphological control of the metal nanoparticles.     

Nilpotent Length of a Finite Solvable Group with a Frobenius Group of Automorphisms

We prove that a finite solvable group G admitting a Frobenius group FH of automorphisms of coprime order with kernel F and complement H such that [G, F] = G and C _{C G (F)}(h) = 1 for all nonidentity elements h ∈ H, is of nilpotent length equal to the nilpotent length of the subgroup of fixed points of H.
