Bi5O7Br and its structural relation to α‐Bi5O7I

Pentabismuth heptoxide bromide, Bi₅O₇Br, crystallizes in the space group Cmca. Its structure is compared with the closely related Ibca structure of α‐Bi₅O₇I. The change in the space group is assumedly the result of a compromise between the different spatial needs of Br and I and the rigidity of the {³_∞}[Bi, O] frameworks into which they are embedded. A detailed procedure for the synthesis of Bi₅O₇Br is given.     

Preliminary analyses of natural radionuclides in selected Turkish power plant lignites

This preliminary study presents the experimental results concerning the concentrations of selected radionuclides (²³⁸U, ²³²K, ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th) in Af?in-Elbistan, Çan, Çay?rhan, Erzurum, Göynük, Kangal, Orhaneli, Saray, Seyitömer, Soma, Tunçbilek, Yata?an and Yeniköy lignites, which are primarily utilized as fuel for thermal power plants in Turkey. Gamma-spectrometry of 39 representative lignite samples gave results with the following concentration ranges: 8 to 296 Bq/kg for ²³⁸U, 3 to 79 Bq/kg for ²³²Th, 17 to 360 Bq/kg for 40K, and 5 to 130 Bq/kg for ²²⁶Ra. The ²³⁸U results reported here are higher than other literature values for various world coals, earth's crust and world average.     

Antimicrobial activity studies of the binuclear metal complexes derived from tridentate Schiff base ligands

Three novel tridentate Schiff base ligands derived fromthe 3-hydroxysalicylaldehyde (H₂L¹), 4-hydroxysalicylaldehyde (H₂L²) and 5-bromosalicylaldehyde (H₂L³) with a new amine N-(pyridyl)-2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-aminobenzylamine (2) have been prepared. The ligands and their metal complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, i.r., electronic absorption and ¹H and ¹³C n.m.r. spectroscopy. All complexes are binuclear and, in some, the H₂O molecules are coordinated to the metal ion. Antimicrobial activities of the ligands and their complexes have been tested against to the Bacillus subtilis IMG 22 (bacteria), Micrococcus luteus LA 2971 (bacteria) Saccharamyces cerevisiae WET 136 (yeast), and Candida albicans CCM 314 (yeast). Thermal properties of all complexes have been studied by t.g. and d.t.a techniques.

Summary Guided by molecular modeling studies, the synthesis of the title compound is described. The organoleptic evaluation proved the predicted real sandal like odour of (Z)-dehydro-homo--santalol.

Structural dependence of non-linear optical properties of 4-Dimethylamino-3-cyanobiphenyl

 4-Dimethylamino-3-cyanobiphenyl (4-DMA-3-CB) was characterized with respect to linear and nonlinear optical properties in a crystal as well as in solution. The crystal structure was studied dependent on the crystallization conditions. It is shown that the crystal structure exhibiting NLO-activity can completely be solved by a combination of electron diffraction and computer modeling. There are four molecules per unit cell in the space group Pna2₁ with dimensions a=10.28 Å, b=22.64 Å, c=5.27 Å. From this model structure the values and orientation of the dipole μ and static second order polarizability β can be calculated. Their relevance to the values obtained by a combination of polarization dependent measurements of Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation (EFISH) and Hyper-Rayleigh-Scattering (HRS) in solution are discussed. The molecular second order polarizability tensor was found to be dominated by one single component. The orientations of the dipole and the vectorial parts of the second order polarizability delivered by the semiempirical calculations are in good agreement with the results of the EFISH and HRS-measurements and allow a deeper insight into the nonlinear optical properties of the crystal.
