Optimization of performance and minimization of silicate interference in continuous flow phosphate analysis

Specific reaction conditions for automated continuous flow analysis of phosphate are optimized in regard to minimizing coating and silicate interference, while maintaining high sensitivity. Use of Sb in the reagent increases sensitivity and yields absorbances with little temperature dependence. Coating can be minimized by using a final solution at a pH>0.5. At final pH of 0.78 there is maximum interference from silicate in the sample. We recommend therefore as an optimal reaction condition with minimal silicate interference, the use of Sb, a final solution pH of 1.00, room temperature for the reaction and a [H(+)]/[Mo] ratio of 70. An equation is provided to correct silicate interference in high precision phosphate determination.

Temperature dependence of the distribution of the first passage time: results from discontinuous molecular dynamics simulations of an all-atom model of the second beta-hairpin fragment of protein G

More than 22 000 folding kinetic simulations were performed to study the temperature dependence of the distribution of first passage time (FPT) for the folding of an all-atom Gō-like model of the second beta-hairpin fragment of protein G. We find that the mean FPT (MFPT) for folding has a U (or V)-shaped dependence on the temperature with a minimum at a characteristic optimal folding temperature T(opt). The optimal folding temperature T(opt) is located between the thermodynamic folding transition temperature and the solidification temperature based on the Lindemann criterion for the solid. Both the T(opt) and the MFPT decrease when the energy bias gap against nonnative contacts increases. The high-order moments are nearly constant when the temperature is higher than T(opt) and start to diverge when the temperature is lower than T(opt). The distribution of FPT is close to a log-normal-like distribution at T > or = T(opt). At even lower temperatures, the distribution starts to develop long power-law-like tails, indicating the non-self-averaging intermittent behavior of the folding dynamics. It is demonstrated that the distribution of FPT can also be calculated reliably from the derivative of the fraction not folded (or fraction folded), a measurable quantity by routine ensemble-averaged experimental techniques at dilute protein concentrations.     

Synthesis and electrochemical properties of Zn3V3O8 as novel anode material

Zn₃V₃O₈ two-dimensional micro sheets are successfully synthesized by combination of solvothermal method and heat treatment. The Zn₃V₃O₈ has better electrochemical performances after calcinations.     

5-[(p-Methyl-phenyl)azo]-8-aminoquinoline as a new reagent for trace determination of nickel by adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry

The synthesis of p-MPAQ and the electroanalytical chemical properties of the nickel(II)-p-MPAQ complex are reported in this paper. A sensitive adsorptive cathodic stripping procedure for trace nickel determination was developed. For a 3-min preconcentration time the detection limit is 3.0 × 10⁻¹¹M.

Selective binding of steroids by 2,2'-biquinoline-4,4'-dicarboxamide-bridged bis(beta-cyclodextrin): fluorescence enhancement by guest inclusion

A novel bis(beta-cyclodextrin) was synthesized, and its binding behavior with steroids was investigated to demonstrate that the cooperative co-inclusion of guest and tether by two cyclodextrin moieties is operative to afford the highest molecular selectivity of up to 3.6 for deoxycholate over taurocholate.     

Host-guest interactions in aqueous media withp-tert.-butylcalix[4]arene bearing polyoxyethylene chains

The interactions ofp-tert.-butylcalix[4]arene bearing polyoxyethylene chains (C3) with pyrene (Py), 1-anilino-8-naphthalenesulfonate (ANS) andN-phenyl-naphthylamine (NPN) in aqueous solution were studied by absorption and fluorescence measurements. Absorption spectral changes and fluorescence enhancements reveal that C3, which has a hydrophobic cavity, can include organic molecules and ions in aqueous solution and form 11 host-guest complexes with ANS and NPN. C3 forms inclusion complexes with Py at different stoichiometries depending on the host: guest molar ratio. Binding constants of 2.2×10⁴, 2.0×10⁴ and 3.6×10⁵ dm³ mol^–1 were calculated for the C3Py, C3ANS and C3NPN complexes (11), respectively, based on the Benesi-Hildebrand equation.Author for correspondence.
