Spectrophotometric determination of copper(II) with carbon disulfide,a secondary amine and triton X-100

Copper(II) is determined by non-extractive spectrophotometry as a complex of butylene dithiocarbamate formed in situ by reaction between carbon disulfide and pyrrolidine in aqueous Triton X-100 medium. This method is similar to that with butylene dithiocarbamate as starting material in the sense of simplicity, sensitivity, precision and accuracy. Pyrrolidine is the best of seven secondary amines tested in this way for copper determinations.     

Ethylene polymerization by chromium complexes with phosphorous‐bridged bisphenoxy ligand

Chromium catalysts combined with phosphorous‐bridged bisphenoxy ligands were found to be highly active for ethylene polymerization. The most efficient catalyst precursor among them, generated by combining bis[3‐tert‐butyl‐5‐methyl‐2‐hydroxyphenyl](phenyl)phosphine hydrochloride ( 1a ) and CrCl₃(THF)₃, was characterized. X‐ray analysis of (3‐tert‐butyl‐5‐methyl‐2‐phenoxy)(3‐tert‐butyl‐5‐methyl‐ 2‐hydroxyphenyl)(phenyl)phosphine bis(tetrahydrofuran)chromium dichloride ( 6 ), obtained by the reaction of 1a and CrCl₃(THF)₃ in the presence of NaH, revealed a unique structure in which one phenol moiety of the bisphenol did not coordinate to the chromium center. Complex 6 showed higher activities than those observed in the in situ catalyst system. Polyethylene of various molecular weights was obtained with differing activators. The highest activity (113.5 kg mmol (cat)^?1 h^?1) was observed when TIBA/TB was used as a cocatalyst. A medium molecular weight polymer with narrow molecular weight distribution (M_w = 128,700, M_w/M_n = 1.8) was obtained using a 6 ‐TIBA/B(C₆F₅)₃ system. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Precise synthesis of porphyrin array scaffolding polyisocyanides

Aryl isocyanides bearing free‐base and metallo‐porphyrins were prepared and polymerized with a Pd–Pt μ‐ethynediyl complex as the initiator to give polymers with narrow polydispersity indices. The molecular weights of the resulting polymers were precisely controlled by the initial feed ratio of the porphyrin monomer to the initiator. The UV–VIS spectra suggested that the porphyrin pendants are regularly arranged to form stacked columns. Metallo‐porphyrin polymers were also prepared by reacting free‐base porphyrin polymers with metal salts. Convergent Star Product Algebras on ‘ax+b’

We define nontempered (exponential growth) function spaces on the Lie group ax+b which are stable under some left-invariant (convergent) star product. The techniques used to achieved the latter come from symmetric spaces geometry and star representation theory.     

Hasse-Witt matrices of Fermat curves

Let m be an integer with m3. Let K and K be perfect fields of characteristic p and p such that (p,m)=1 and (p,m)=1, respectively. Moreover let A and A be algebraic function fields over K and K defined by x^m+y^m=a(0, ak) and x^m+y^m=a(a0 ak), respectively. Put g=(m–1)(m–2)/2. Denote by M(K,p,a) and M(K,p,a) the Hasse-Witt matrices of A and A with respect to the canonical bases of holomorphic differentials. Then we show that if p+p0(mod.m) then rank M(K,p,a)+rank M(K,p,a)=g and if pp1 (mod.m) then rank M(K,p,a)=rank M(K,p,a).     

Structures of americanol A and isoamericanol A having a neurotrophic property from the seeds of Phytolacca americana.

The structures of new neo-lignans, isoamericanol A (1) and americanol A (2) isolated from the seeds of Phytolacca americana have been elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data and then confirmed by chemical correlation with the previously known isoamericanin A (3) and americanin A (4). Isoamericanol A, americanol A, and americanin A have been found to enhance choline acetyltransferase activity at 10(-5) M in a cultured neuronal cell system derived from fetal rat hemisphere.     

Regional cerebral blood flow measurement in brain tumors

The regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) was determined on seventeen patients with brain tumors. Ring type single photon emission CT (SPECT) was used following intravenous injection of 133Xe. Case materials included eleven meningiomas and six malignant gliomas. Evaluation was performed with emphasis on the following points; Correlation of the flow data within tumors to the angiographic tumor stains, Influence of tumors on the cerebral blood flow of the normal brain tissue, Correlation between degree of peripheral edema and the flow data of the affected hemispheres. There was significant correlation between flow data within tumors and angiographic tumor stains in meningiomas. Influence of tumors on cerebral blood flow of the normal tissue was greater in meningiomas than in gliomas. There was negative correlation between the degree of peripheral edema and the flow data of the affected hemisphere. It has been concluded that the measurement of CBF in brain tumors is a valuable method in evaluation of brain tumors.     

Enantiomeric purity determination of malic acid in apple juices by multi-beam circular dichroism detection

A multi-beam circular dichroism (CD) detector which is easily constructed by inserting inexpensive optics into a conventional photo-diode array detector has an advantage of simultaneous detection of the absorbance and CD. The enantiomeric purity determination of malic acid in beverages was performed by this detection system. Malic acid when complexed with Cu(II) was found to have an absorbance maximum at around 750 nm. The L-malic acid-Cu(II) complex showed a positive Cotton effect in its absorbance band and its anisotropy factor (delta epsilon/epsilon) was relatively large at about 1/170. This complex was retained on a reversed-phase column with the addition of racemic 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid to the mobile phase as the ligand. A plot of the relative peak areas between the CD and the absorption (delta abs/abs) versus optical purity showed good linearity with a correlation coefficient of 0.999, and the precision expressed as the relative standard deviation of the errors from the regression line was +/-2.7% (2sigma). The accuracy of the proposed method was assessed by capillary electrophoresis. Eight commercially available juice products were analyzed using this method. Five of them were thought to be adulterated with synthetic malic acid.
