GaAs traveling-wave optical modulator using a modulated coplanar strip electrode with periodic cross-tie overlay

This paper proposes and analyzes a GaAs traveling-wave optical modulator which uses a modulated coplanar strip electrode with periodic cross-tie overlay. This slow-wave structure can be designed to satisfy phase velocity and impedance matching conditions simultaneously. The dominant conductor loss in the slow-wave structure is reduced using the modulated coplanar strip electrode. The calculated 3-dB modulation bandwidth (100 GHz) is much wider than the bandwidth limit (30 GHz) of conventional electrode structures that are limited by phase velocity mismatch.This work was supported by the U.S. Army Research Office under contract DAAL-03-88-K-0005 and the Texas Advanced Technology Program.     

Oxygen isotope effect of superconducting (Nd1−xCex)2CuO4−δ system

The effect of oxygen isotope substitution on the transition temperature T_c of a superconducting (Nd_1−xCe_x)₂CuO_4−δ system was studied, where the special synthetic method was taken to minimize ambiguous factors on the oxygen concentration and to guarantee the complete substitution of ¹⁶O by ¹⁸O. The isotope exponent in the relationship of T_c∝1/M was estimated to be less than 0.15 by magnetic susceptibility measurements.     

Low-frequency internal friction in complex composite strands

Conclusion A method was proposed which makes it possible to study the low-frequency internal friction of complex fibers. This method was used to study the internal friction of complex composite fibers based on PCA and PE. Effect of rare-earth oxides on the magnetic properties of anisotropic barium ferrites

The effect of rare-earth oxides on the properties of anisotropic barium ferrites has been studied by x-ray structural and Mössbauer methods. Additions of SrCO₃, as well as SrCO₃ and La₂O₃, SrCO₃ and Pr₆O₁₁, SrCO₃ and Nd₂O₃, SrCO₃ and Sm₂O₃ in amounts of 7.5 mole % Sr and 10 mole % rare-earth element to grade-A barium powder results in the substitution of barium ions by Sr and rare-earth ions; consequently, the energy of magnetic anisotropy changes and the technically important parameters B_r and (BH)_max increase.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 1, pp. 34–39, January, 1989.     

On the feasibility of antideuteron production and storage at CERN

The new Antiproton Accumulator Complex is now in operation at CERN. We consider the possibility of using this facility to create and store antideuterons and conclude that we could achieve an accumulation rate of about 2·10⁶ particles/day. No major rebuild of the rings is envisaged, but it is thought that modification to existing components and becoming operational would take about 5 to 6 months. We stress, however, that the operation of such a facility and the use of any stack of antideuterons for particle physics would be extremely taxing.     

Linear absorbing boundary conditions for surface water wave propagation

Summary The meaning of linear absorbing boundary conditions for periodic water waves in elliptical approaches is discussed. It is found that the direction of propagation of the waves must be known for reliable boundary conditions and that the energy dissipation of waves running parallel to a boundary in general cannot be modelled in the framework of a linear theory. Vibrations of a magnet levitated over a flat superconductor

Based on a dipole-dipole interaction model, we discuss the levitation force and related vibration problems to understand the effects of flux pinning in type-II superconductors, and the applications of levitation in superconducting systems.     

Nonlinear effects of electrical transport in crystals with orbital degeneration

The influence of an electrical field on the charge transfer in crystals with orbital degeneration is investigated. An expression is obtained for the current density in crystals with narrow d-conduction bands in transition metal compounds. As the electrical field intensity increases, a current density maximum is observed with a subsequent section of negative differential conductivity. 光学傅氏变换离焦近似及对解卷积的应用

本文研究了光学傅氏变换的离焦近似问题,导出了使傅氏变换关系近似成立在光学上所需要满足的离焦条件,并以此为基础,提出用离焦谱平面方法对电子显微照相图象进行解卷积处理,使得光学解卷过程大大简化。实验得到了满意的结果。 关键词：
