Spectral stability of general non-negative self-adjoint operators with applications to Neumann-type operators

We prove a stability theorem for the eigenvalues of general non-negative self-adjoint linear operators with compact resolvents and by applying it we prove a sharp stability result for the dependence of the eigenvalues of second order uniformly elliptic linear operators with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions upon domain perturbation.     

Notes on Banach Ideals

The aim of the present article is to study two constructions of new space ideals from given ones. Properties of some classes of BANACH spaces scattered in the literature are obtained as particular cases of the above constructions.     

Radiation-induced processes and defects in alkali and alkaline-earth borate crystals

The paper presents the results of a study of the radiation-induced processes and defects in nonlinear optical crystals Li₂B₄O₇ (LTB), LiB₃O₅ (LBO), CsLiB₆O₁₀, KB₅O₈·4H₂O, β-BaB₂O₄. It was revealed that a pulsed electron beam irradiation at 290 K forms the radiation-induced pairs of the ‘vacancy—interstitial atom’ defects in the cation sublattice of these crystals. This gives rise to a creation of metastable electronic (interstitial atom) and hole (small-radius polaron near the cation vacancy) centers in high concentrations. Optical hole-transitions from the local level of the trapped hole centers to the valence band states are responsible for the transient optical absorptions (TOA) of borates in the visible and UV spectral ranges. A sublattice of the weakly bound mobile lithium cations in LTB and LBO favors a spatial separation of the radiation-induced pair defects ‘hole polaron near Li-vacancy—mobile interstitial Li⁰ atom’. Their decay rated by the electron–hole nonradiative tunnel recombination determines a peculiar feature of the TOA decay kinetics in LTB and LBO.

Sensitivity- and Gradient-Enhanced Hetero (ω1) Half-Filtered TOCSY Experiment for Measuring Long-Range Heteronuclear Coupling Constants

An enhanced version of the X(ω₁) half-filtered TOCSY experiment for measurement of long-range heteronuclear coupling constants is proposed which yields high-quality spectra with substantially increased sensitivity and resolution. The modified method features gradient-enhanced X filtering sequences, broadband homonuclear decoupling duringt₁, optional¹J_XHscaling in theF₁domain, and gradient coherence selection in combination with the sensitivity-enhanced protocol for the TOCSY transfer. These modifications extend the applicability of the method—coupling constants can be measured accurately for natural abundance samples at low concentrations and for compounds yielding complex spectra. Computer-aided analysis of E.COSY-type multiplets is applied for the determination of heteronuclear long-range coupling constants.     

Using Metaphors to Unpack Student Beliefs About Mathematics

This paper reports on an exploratory study of the mathematical beliefs of a group of ninth and tenth grade students at a large, college preparatory, private school in the Southeastern United States. These beliefs were revealed using contemporary metaphor theory. A thematic analysis of the students' metaphors for mathematics indicated that students had well developed and complex views about mathematics including math as: an Interconnected Structure, a Hierarchical Structure, a Journey of Discovery, an Uncertain Journey, and a Tool. Another prevalent theme revealed by the metaphors was that students believe perseverance is needed for success in mathematics. The data also suggest an impact of gender and tracking on students beliefs about mathematics. Creating metaphors for mathematics provided a catalyst for student reflection, class discussion, and qualitative data, which could aid program evaluation. Several areas for future research were identified through this exploratory study.     

Microscopic foundation of the phenomenological few-level approach to coherent semiconductor optics

We present the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments for Cr₂O₃ carried out using the single-crystal time-of-flight spectrometer PRISMA at ISIS (U.K.) as well as the three-axis spectrometer TAS-1 at JAERI(J). The collected data are analysed on the basis of phenomenological shell models showing convincing agreement between calculation and experiment both for the frequencies and intensities. All together the dispersion relations of 12 out of 20 phonon branches along the three-fold axis are determined. By a comparison with the Cr₂O₃ iso-type sapphire (Al₂O₃) it is found that the dynamical response of the oxygen ion is only little affected by the ionic substitution. The chromiumd electrons find their expression mainly in a strengthening of the metal-oxygen bonding. The problem of ionic polarizabilities is addressed in detail both for the oxygen and chromium ions.
