Phonon scattering by Ni3+ ions in Al2O3

Previous thermal conductivity measurements on Al₂O₃ + Ni single crystals have been extended down to 80 mK. The quantitative analysis shows that the lineshape of the low temperature resonant is determineded by random strains in the crystal, and gives a possible value for the ‘tunneling splitting’ 3Γ of 0.54 cm^?1.     

Suppression of MeIQ-induced SOS response by allylbenzenes from Asiasarum heterotropoides in the Salmonella typhimurium OY1001/1A2 umu test

Three allylbenzenes from Asiasarum heterotropoides, methyleugenol (1), elemicin (2) and gamma-asaron (3) showed suppressive effects on umu gene expression of the SOS response in the Salmonella typhimurium OY1001/1A2 umu test against the mutagen 2-amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f ]quinoline (MeIQ). Gene expression was suppressed 70.0, 75.9 and 81.7% at a concentration of 0.4 mM, respectively. The ID50 values (50% inhibition dose) of these compounds were 0.125, 0.098 and 0.059 mM, respectively. On the other hand, compounds 1-3 showed weak suppressive effects of the SOS-inducing activity on activated MeIQ.     

Initial quantum levels of captured muons in CO,CO2, and COS

The role of valence electrons for the muon capture process by molecules is experimentally investigated with the aid of cascade calculations. Low-momentum muons are introduced to gas targets of CO, CO₂, and COS below atmospheric pressure. The initial states of captured muons are determined from the measured muonic X-ray structure of the Lyman and Balmer series. We propose that the lone pair electrons in the carbon atom of CO significantly contribute to the capture of a muon with large angular momenta.

     

Structure and absolute configuration of enhydrin bromohydrin

X-ray study of enhydrin bromohydrin, C₂₃H₂₉BrO₁₀, reveals that the crystal has space groupP2₁2₁2₁ with cell parametersa =10.08,b = 26.97, andc = 8.94 Å. There are four molecules in the unit cell. The structure was solved by direct methods, with three-dimensional CuK diffractometer data to = 75 °, and refined by block-diagonal least squares to anR index of 11.4% for 2254 reflections. The molecule is a germacronolide sesquiterpene having acis sterochemistry at the C(1), C(10) double bond and atrans configuration at the epoxide ring, C(4)-O-C(5). The absolute configuration established on the basis of the anomalous scattering of CuK. radiation by the bromine atom shows that the asymmetric atoms have the 4R, 5R, 6S, 7S, 8S, 9S, 20S, and 22S configurations.

Computational thermal and kinetic analysis

A software package to determine the non-isothermal kinetic parameters of heterogeneous reactions has been developed. The dynamic handle of conversion degree step and ranges, heating rates and kinetic models makes the evaluation of the activation parameters much faster. The standard procedure: ‘model-free’ kineitc, IKP and Perez-Maqueda et al. methods, is applied for the determination of the kinetic triplet corresponding to thermal induced transformations. The software is designed mainly for thermogravimetric, temperature programmed reduction and dilatometry data processing, but may also import already transformed numeric data.

Calix[4]bis(thiacrown): assembly of an endocyclic disilver(I) complex and exocyclic 3D copper(I) coordination polymers

Calix[4]bis(thiacrown-5) (L) with 1,3-alternating conformation was employed as a strong dinucleating ligand for the soft metal ions AgI and CuI. The reaction of L with AgPF6 afforded a discrete endo-coordinated disilver(I) complex 1, [Ag2L](PF6)2. In contrast, mixed products (2a + 2b) consisting of 3D networks were obtained from the reaction of L and CuI; 2b linked with a Cu4I4 cubane unit was shown to generate photoluminescence, while 2a linked with a Cu2I2 rhomboid unit does not.     

X-ray characterization of precipitates in cerium-doped PbTe and SnTe crystals

The homogeneity, solid solubility, and chemical bonds in the new materials PbTe, SnTe doped with Ce were investigated. Scanning electron microscope observation and electron probe microanalysis carried out on PbTe crystals doped with Ce, revealed three types of Ce-rich precipitates with following compositions: CeTe₂, Ce₃Te₇, Ce₂Te₅ and small admixture of PbTe in precipitates. The solubility of Ce in PbTe matrix was estimated as 0.5±0.1 at. %. The solubility of PbTe in CeTe₂ and Ce₃Te₇ was found to be 3±0.5 at. %, but 7±0.5 at. % in the case of Ce₂Te₅. In SnTe crystal doped with Ce only one kind of precipitate with composition Ce₂SnTe₅ was found. Cerium solubility in SnTe matrix was estimated to be 1±0.25 at. %. According to our knowledge this is the first report of the identification of Ce₂SnTe₅ compound. The similar compounds Ce₂SnS₅ and Ce₂SnSe₅ are known.
