Improved synthesis of tocopherol fatty alcohols and analogs: microglial activation modulators

The synthesis of tocopherol fatty alcohols (TFAs), potent microglial activation modulators, was achieved via C-alkylation of trimethylhydroquinone. Several analogs, in particular water-soluble prodrugs, have been synthesized using a Wittig reaction and their antioxidant activities have been evaluated.

Allophane: a natural gel in volcanic soils with interesting environmental properties

Volcanic (allophanic) soils are interesting in terms of the control of the greenhouse effect and the knowledge of the porous features is of importance to understand the mechanism of C and N sequestration. These soils contain a peculiar clay: allophane aggregates quite close to the synthetic mineral gels aggregates. These volcanic materials behave as gels during drying with a large irreversible shrinkage that can modify the soil physical properties. Consequently, as for silica gels, we use the CO₂ supercritical drying procedure (SD) to control the drying step and to preserve the structural and textural properties of the soils. The experimental results show that the N and C content in the soils is clearly dependent on the allophane content. We also show that the textural properties, such as specific surface area, are higher for the supercritically dried samples, compared to the classically dried samples, and SAXS results confirm the preserving effect of the SD. With these data, we propose possible effects of the specific surface area on the C and N content of the allophanic soils.

In particular, in the model case whereF(s)=?s ^?α, for some 0<α<1, and for every ω>M, there exists a solution of (E) of the form ψ(t, x)=e ^iωt?(x), wherex ₀=t andx=(x ₁,x ₂,x ₃), such that ? has compact support. IF 0<α<1/3, then ? is of classC ¹. If 1/3<α<1, then ? is continuously differentiable, except on some sphere {|x|=R}, where |??| is infinite.

The crystal structure of 2-(carboxy-3-propyl)-3-amino-6-cyclohexylpyridazinium bromide has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques and refined by full-matrix least squares. The compound crystallized in the tri-clinic space groupP ¯1 witha=10.275(1),b=11.215(1),c=7.082(1) Å,=91.84(1),=102.21(1), =106.77(1)°, andZ=2. FinalR-factor is 0.045. The main structural results are very similar to the ones observed for the 6-phenyl analog. These two compounds are GABA-A antagonists.Ab initio molecular orbital calculations, with STO-3G and 4-31G basis sets, suggest that the exocyclic nitrogen accurately mimics the nitrogen atom of GABA.

Manicoline B, isolated from the root bark of $\text{Dulacia guianensis}$ (Olacaceae), was shown by X-ray analysis to be an equimolecular mixture of two diastereoisomers of a new alkaloid and to have structure (3).

Under Lewis acid activation, hemiaminals of trifluoroacetaldehyde and related (fluoroalkyl)aldehydes generate iminium species that can react with various nucleophiles to provide fluorinated amines.     

Naphthopyranquinone Antibiotics: Novel enantioselective syntheses of frenolicin B and some of its stereoisomers

Two new enantioselective syntheses of the naphthopyranquinone antibiotic frenolicin B ( 1 ), of its enantiomer 2 , and of its diastereoisomers 3 and 4 were accomplished using two different routes from optically active β-Hydroxy esters (R)- and (S)- 11 and 18. β-Hydroxy esters (R)- and (S)- 11 were prepared stereoselectively from optically active sulfenylacetates (S)- and (R)- 10 , respectively (Scheme 2, Method A). Alternatively, compound 18 was obtained in excellent yield by enantioselective hydrogenation of the corresponding β-keto ester 17 , using a chiral ruthenium-complex catalyst (Scheme 3, Method B). Subsequently, compounds (S)- 11 and 18 were transformed into frenolicin B (1). In analogy, Stereoisomers 2–4 were prepared from (S)- and (R)- 11 in good yields.     

Optimization of a nitrogen analyser based on the Dumas method

The objectives of this work was to obtain a total nitrogen concentration in milk with the Dumas method for industrial and research applications. This method was faster than the Kjheldal method (5 min against 2 h or 3 h) but less precise. A three factor experimental design was performed to optimize the instrument, a FP-2000 supplied by LECO. The first interpretation of the experimental design was disappointing and no conclusion could be done. It was not a failure of experimental design but a lack of thinking on the physical and chemical aspect of the problem. Selection and construction of composite responses based on chemical and physical consideration were the keys to optimize the Dumas method. This method is now as precise as the Kjheldal method, but considerably faster.
