Synthesis and cation-binding properties of poly-and bis(thiacrown ether)s

Poly- and bis(thiacrown ether) derivatives in which some oxygen atoms of benzocrown ether moiety are replaced by sulfur atoms have been synthesized. Their cation-binding abilities were investigated by using the solvent extraction method. The poly- and bis(benzothiacrown ether)s showed great affinity for silver ion, being more excellent in the affinity than the corresponding monocyclic analogs. They, however, possess very poor cation-binding ability for alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions. The poly- and bis(thiacrown ether)s also bind mercuric ions effectively, whereas the corresponding monomeric analogs do not at all.     

Convenient synthesis of 3,3,3-trifluoropropenyl compounds from aromatic aldehydes by means of the TBAF-mediated Horner reaction

A simple synthesis of 3,3,3-trifluoropropenyl compounds by means of the TBAF-mediated Horner reaction is described. The reagent, 2,2,2-trifluoroethyldiphenylphosphine oxide, was readily prepared either by Arbuzov reaction of ethyl diphenylphosphinite with 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl iodide or by treating chlorodiphenylphosphine with trifluoroacetic acid and water. Treatment of the phosphine oxide with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of TBAF at room temperature afforded the corresponding 3,3,3-trifluoropropenyl compounds in good yields. The present method is very convenient for preparing 3,3,3-trifluoropropenyl compounds from aromatic aldehydes in terms of availability of the reagent, operational simplicity, and good yields of the products.     

Synthesis of optically active forms of seudenol,the pheromone of douglas fir beetle

(R)-(+)-Seudenol (3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-ol) and its antipode were synthesized from optically active forms of 3-iodocyclohex-2-en-1-ol by treatment with Me₂CuLi. Their absolute configurations were determined by converting (+)-3-iodocyclohex-2-en-1-ol to the known (R)-(+)-cyclohex-2-en-1-ol.     

Thermody namic functions of 1,2-alkanediols in dilute aqueous solutions

The heat capacities of binary aqueous solutions of 1,2-ethanediol, 1,2-propanediol and 1,2-butanediol were measured at temperatures ranging from 283.15 to 338.15 K by differential scanning calorimetry. The partial molar heat capacities at the infinite dilution were then calculated for the respective alkanediols. For 1,2-ethanediol or 1,2-propanediol, the partial molar heat capacities at the infinite dilution of increased with increasing temperature. In contrast, the partial molar heat capacities of 1,2-butanediol at the infinite dilution decreased with increasing temperature. Heat capacity changes by dissolution of the alkanediols were also determined. Heat capacity changes caused by the dissolution of 1,2-ethanediol or 1,2-propanediol were increase with increasing temperature. On the other hand, heat capacity changes caused by the dissolution of 1,2-butanediol are decrease with increasing temperature. Thus our results indicated that the structural changes of water caused by the dissolution of 1,2-butanediol differed from that of the two other alkanediols. Preparation and photochromism of diarylethene covalently bonded onto layered sodium-magadiite surfaces

Diarylethene derivatives (DE) covalently bonded to silanol oxygens of layered silicate surfaces, i.e., magadiite (Mag), were synthesized and investigated for their photochromic behavior. The DE-Mag layered hybrids were found to undergo reversible color change by alternating UV and visible light irradiation. A more highly efficient, reproducible photochromic behavior was realized with DE-Mag than with a corresponding DE-Si possessing silyl substituents on DE in place of the Mag surface. Moreover, the present covalently bonded DE exhibited an improvement over DE hybrids incorporated in layered double hydroxide (LDH) clays, in which the repetitive photochromic behavior decreased during alternating irradiation, due to the accumulation of the photochemically inert parallel isomers of DE.     

Stereoselective adduct formation of α-acylcamphorato-copper(II) chelates with some chiral Lewis bases

The formation constants of the mono-adducts of α-acylcamphorato-copper(II) chelates such as (+)-Cu(facam)₂, (?)-Cu(facam)₂, (+)-Cu(hfbc)₂ and (?)-Cu(hfbc)₂ with some chiral Lewis bases were determined spectrophotometrically in benzene. In order to compare the adduct formation constants obtained with the (+)- and (?)-forms, some pairs of chiral Lewis bases such as 1-amino-2-propanol [(R)(?), (S)(+)], 1-(α-naphthyl)ethylamine [(R)(+), (S)(?)], α-phenyl ethylamine [(R)(+), (S)(?)] and also quinine and quinidine were examined as neutral ligands. Although not very pronounced, the effects of combinations obtained for (+)- or (?)-Cu(II) chelates and (+)- or (?)-ligands indicate that formation constants obtained by the formation of adducts with the ligands having different directions of the optical rotation seems to be superior to those with the same direction.     

Photoinduced face-inversion of conjugated tetraene ligands on a Pd-Pd-Pd moiety

The linear sandwich tripalladium complexes [Pd3{Ar(CH=CH)4Ar}2[BArf]2 (Ar = Ph, p-t-Bu-C6H4, p-styryl-C6H4) undergo photoinduced isomerization involving face-inversion of the tetraene ligands. Irradiation of these complexes with visible light (>510 nm) resulted in rac (staggered sandwich) to meso (eclipsed sandwich) isomerization. The structures of rac and meso isomers are determined by X-ray crystallographic analyses.     

Enantioselective Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction promoted by a heterobimetallic complex with a Lewis base

A new double-activation catalysis is presented for the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction of an α,β-unsaturated ketone and an aldehyde by the combined use of a heterobimetallic asymmetric complex and tributylphosphine ((n-Bu)₃P) to afford the α-methylene-β-hydroxy ketone with up to 99% ee.
