Observation of carrier-envelope phase phenomena in the multi-optical-cycle regime

So far the role of the carrier-envelope phase of a light pulse has been clearly experimentally evidenced only in the sub-6-fs temporal regime. Here we show, both experimentally and theoretically, the influence of the carrier-envelope phase of a multi-optical-cycle light pulse on high-order harmonic generation. For the first time, we demonstrate that the short and long electron quantum paths contributing to harmonic generation are influenced in a different way by the pulse carrier-envelope phase.     

Generation of 3.8-fs pulses from adaptive compression of a cascaded hollow fiber supercontinuum

We demonstrate generation of 3.8-fs pulses with energies of up to 15 microJ from a supercontinuum produced in two cascaded hollow fibers. Ultrabroadband dispersion compensation was achieved through a closed-loop combination of a spatial light modulator for adaptive pulse compression and spectral-phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) measurements as feedback signal.     

Ultrafast all optical switching via tunable Fano interference

Tunneling induced quantum interference experienced by an incident probe in asymmetric double quantum wells can easily be modulated by means of an external control light beam. This phenomenon, which is here examined within the dressed-state picture, can be exploited to devise a novel all-optical ultrafast switch. For a suitably designed semiconductor heterostructure, the switch is found to exhibit frequency bandwidths of the order of 0.1 THz and response and recovery times of about 1 ps.     

Laser study of the photophysical properties of UF6

The purpose of this paper is to review the most relevant theoretical and experimental results reported in recent years, on the photophysical properties of the uranium hexafluoride molecule in the gas phase. Details of the structure of the molecular orbitals of UF₆ are discussed with reference to theoretical calculations of the electronic states. Tentative assignments of the electronic transitions in the experimental visible-uv absorption spectrum are also considered. The fluorescence properties of the excited states of UF₆ are critically reviewed. The use of laser beams to excite the fluorescence emission of UF₆ is shown to be a fruitful experimental technique. The measurement of fluorescence parameters (i.e. the emission and excitation spectra, the decay time and quantum yield) is a particularly valuable and sensitive way of studying the dynamics and structure of the excited electronic states. The different mechanisms of fluorescence quenching that have been proposed are also critically reviewed.     

Subnanosecond amplified spontaneous emission pulses by a nitrogen pumped dye laser

Pulses of 100 ps duration and peak power up to 100 kW are obtained with a dye laser pumped by an atmospheric pressure nitrogen laser of 0.5 ns duration. The shortening of the dye laser pulses is attributed to amplified spontaneous emission.     

Femtosecond micromachining of symmetric waveguides at 1.5 microm by astigmatic beam focusing

We report on a new spatial beam-shaping approach for fabrication of waveguides with a circular transverse profile by femtosecond laser pulses, using an astigmatic beam and controlling both beam waist and focal position in the tangential and sagittal planes. We apply this technique to write single-mode active waveguides at 1.5microm in Er:Yb-doped glass substrates. The experimental results are well described by a simple nonlinear absorption model.     

Pulse compression over a 170-THz bandwidth in the visible by use of only chirped mirrors

We report on double-chirped mirrors with custom-tailored dispersion characteristics over a bandwidth of 170 THz in the visible. The mirrors are used in a prismless compressor for a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier in the visible. The compressed pulses, characterized for the what is believed to be first time by use of the spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction technique, display a nearly flat phase from 510 to 710 nm and have a duration of 5.7 fs.     

Rhodium(II)‐Catalyzed Nondirected Oxidative Alkenylation of Arenes: Arene Loading at One Equivalent

A bimetallic Rh^II catalyst promoted the C? H alkenylation of simple arenes at 1.0 equivalent without the use of a directing group. A phosphine ligand as well as cooperative reoxidation of Rh^II with Cu(TFA)₂ and V₂O₅ proved essential in providing monoalkenylated products in good yields and selectivities, especially with di‐ and trisubstituted arenes.
