In the proposed accelerator driven systems (ADS) the possible use of several milliamperes of protons of about 1 GeV incident
on high mass targets like the molten lead-bismuth eutectic is anticipated to pose radiological problems that have so far not
been encountered by the radiation protection community. Spallation reaction products like high energy gammas, neutrons, muons,
pions and several radiotoxic nuclides including Po-210 complicate the situation. In the present paper, we discuss radiation
safety measures like bulk shielding, containment of radiation leakage through ducts and penetration and induced activity in
the structure to protect radiation workers as well as estimation of sky-shine, soil and ground water activation, release of
toxic gases to the environment to protect public as per the stipulations of the regulatory authorities. We recommend the application
of the probabilistic safety analysis technique by assessing the probability and criticality of different hazard-initiating
events using HAZOP and FMECA.

The neutron ambient dose equivalent has been measured from 10B, 11B, 12C, 13C, 16O and 18O projectiles of energy 5 MeV/amu incident on a thick Al target at 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° with respect to the beam direction using a conventional dose equivalent meter. The calculated results obtained using previously reported empirical relations do not reproduce the experimental data. The results obtained from the PACE nuclear reaction code are closer to the experimental data as compared to the various empirical expressions. The ratio of the increase in the dose rates when the projectile is changed from the lighter to the heavier isotopes is fairly reproduced by most of the empirical formulations and the PACE code. A previously reported relation for the slope parameter is used to predict the directional distribution of the neutron dose for the projectiles used in this study. The calculated doses are lower than the experimental results in the forward directions but agree within the uncertainties at the backward directions. A new set of projectile-based parameters have been derived from the present experimental data which can be used in an empirical formulation. 相似文献

AbstractThe low cycle fatigue (LCF) performance of AA6063 Al–Mg–Si alloy at under-aged (UA), peak-aged (PA) and over-aged (OA) conditions has been examined to understand the micromechanism of fatigue and the associated dynamic structural changes in this alloy. The LCF behaviour of the differently aged AA6063 alloys has been studied at strain amplitudes ranging between 0.2 and 1.0% under strain control mode. The UA state exhibits pronounced cyclic hardening unlike the PA and the OA states at strain amplitudes greater than 0.4%. The PA and the OA states show hardening only for a few cycles followed by prolonged softening. Characterisations of the micro- and the sub-structural alterations due to LCF establish that the phenomenon of dynamic precipitation results in cyclic hardening the UA alloy. The softening of PA alloy occurs due to shearing of precipitates and that in the OA alloy takes place owing to reversibility of slip by the formation and annihilation of the Orowan loops around the β (Mg2Si) precipitates. Analyses of the hysteresis loops reveal Masing, nearly-Masing and non-Masing behaviour in the UA, OA and PA states, respectively. Analyses of the asymmetry factor of the hysteresis loops assist to infer that the Masing behaviour in the UA alloy is due to dislocation–dislocation interactions, whereas the nearly-Masing behaviour in the OA alloy and the non-Masing behaviour in the PA alloy are the consequence of varying degrees of dislocation–precipitate interactions associated with inhomogeneous deformation. 相似文献

We discuss the stability of solutions to a class of nonlinear third-order ordinary differential equations arising in the viscous
flow over a nonlinearly stretching sheet. In particular, we consider solutions over the semi-infinite interval [0, ∞). These
results complement the available existence and uniqueness results in the literature. We find that, in general, there is one
stable solution branch and one unstable solution branch. Furthermore, it is observed that the stable solution becomes more
stable with an increase in the nonlinearity due to the stretching sheet, while the unstable solution branch becomes more unstable

We present an efficient algorithm for finding k nearest neighbors of a query line segment among a set of points distributed arbitrarily on a two dimensional plane. Along the way to finding this algorithm, we have obtained an improved triangular range searching technique in 2D. Given a set of n points, we preprocess them to create a data structure using O(n2) time and space, such that given a triangular query region Δ, the number of points inside Δ can be reported in O(logn) time. Finally, this triangular range counting technique is used for finding k nearest neighbors of a query straight line segment in O(log2n+k) time. 相似文献

Synthesis of a tetrakis(1-pyrenylethynyl)-substituted rigid hinge-like molecule (1) is described. The intramolecular pi-stacking interaction of the pyrene units is studied by 1H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Due to intramolecular pi-stacking interactions, chemical shifts of the pyrene protons in 1 are highly shielded in the NMR spectrum. Fluorescence from the static excimer state is observed due to pi-stacking interactions among the pyrene units in the ground state of 1. The current fMRI study investigated correlations of low-frequency signal changes in the left inferior frontal gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus and cerebellum in 13 adult dyslexic and 10 normal readers to examine functional networks associated with these regions. The extent of these networks to regions associated with phonological processing (frontal gyrus, occipital gyrus, angular gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, supramarginal gyrus and cerebellum) was compared between good and dyslexic readers. Analysis of correlations in low-frequency range showed that regions known to activate during an "on-off" phoneme-mapping task exhibit synchronous signal changes when the task is administered continuously (without any "off" periods). Results showed that three functional networks, which were defined on the basis of documented structural deficits in dyslexics and included regions associated with phonological processing, differed significantly in spatial extent between good readers and dyslexics. The methodological, theoretical and clinical significance of the findings for advancing fMRI research and knowledge of dyslexia are discussed. 相似文献

This paper investigates the unsteady boundary layer stagnation-point flow and heat transfer over a linearly shrinking sheet in the presence of velocity and thermal slips. Similarity solutions for the transformed governing equations are obtained and the reduced equations are then solved numerically using fourth order Runge-Kutta method with shooting technique. The numerical results show that multiple solutions exist for certain range of the ratio of shrinking velocity to the free stream velocity (i.e., α) which again depend on the unsteadiness parameter β and the velocity slip parameter (i.e., δ). An enhancement of the velocity slip parameter δ causes more increment in the existence range of similarity solution. Fluid velocity at a point increases increases with the increase in the value of the velocity slip parameter δ, resulting in a decrease in the temperature field. The effects of the velocity and thermal slip parameters, unsteadiness parameter (β) and the velocity ratio parameter (α) on the velocity and temperature distributions are computed, analyzed and discussed. The reported results are in good agreement with the available published results in the literature. 相似文献
