Rotary birefringent and quarter-wave plates applied to photoelasticimetry

With the help of Poincare's geometric representation and associated matrices, the authors point out the different equivalent operators issued from the decomposition of the representative matrix of a rotating birefringent. They also show that it is possible to obtain achromatic quarter-wave plates within a second-order error by composition of birefringent and rotary-power plates. Original measure principles in ellipsometry and photoelasticimetry have been deduced by the use of both of these new operators. One obtains automatically and simultaneously angular parameters of a polarized light. The principle of the monochromatic and automatic photoelasticimeter described is consistent with the use of two wavelengths and it eliminates all the errors of the first order. In the field of three-dimensional photoelasticimetry with scattered light, the matrix elements representing an elliptic birefringent are directly obtained. One deduces properties of a linear birefringent added with this elliptic birefringent from the variation of this fast. The principles of this apparatus are very simple and enable one to obtain accurate and digital values of the photoelastic parameters and to allow a direct treatment of the results with a small calculator.     

Total Synthesis of Albicidin: A Lead Structure from Xanthomonas albilineans for Potent Antibacterial Gyrase Inhibitors

The peptide antibiotic albicidin, which is synthesized by the plant pathogenic bacterium Xanthomonas albilineans, displays remarkable antibacterial activity against various Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative microorganisms. The low amounts of albicidin obtainable from the producing organism or through heterologous expression are limiting factors in providing sufficient material for bioactivity profiling and structure–activity studies. Therefore, we developed a convergent total synthesis route toward albicidin. The unexpectedly difficult formation of amide bonds between the aromatic amino acids was achieved through a triphosgene‐mediated coupling strategy. The herein presented synthesis of albicidin confirms the previously determined chemical structure and underlines the extraordinary antibacterial activity of this compound. The synthetic protocol will provide multigram amounts of albicidin for further profiling of its drug properties.     

Non-accretive Schrödinger operators and exponential decay of their eigenfunctions

We consider non-self-adjoint electromagnetic Schrödinger operators on arbitrary open sets with complex scalar potentials whose real part is not necessarily bounded from below. Under a suitable sufficient condition on the electromagnetic potential, we introduce a Dirichlet realisation as a closed densely defined operator with non-empty resolvent set and show that the eigenfunctions corresponding to discrete eigenvalues satisfy an Agmon-type exponential decay.     

Synthèse d'analogues furanniques et nitro-2 furanniques du diméthyl-7,12 benzanthracène

A route to 1-formyl-2-hydroxy-9-methylanthracene and 1-formy 1-2-hydroxy-9,10-dimethylanthracene is desribed. These two aldehydes were further converted into mono- or dimethylanthra[2,1-b]furans, besides the corresponding acids and esters, by condensation with ethyl bromoacetate. The related mono- or dimethyl-2-nitroanthra[2,1-b]furans were also prepared by reaction between the above aldehydes and bromonitromethane, followaed by heating in toluene in the presence of p-toluene-sulfonic acid.     

Iodine as a novel and efficient reagent for the synthesis of α-aminonitriles by a three-component condensation of carbonyl compounds, amines, and trimethylsilyl cyanide

A straightforward and general method has been developed for the synthesis of α-aminonitriles by simply combining aldehydes or ketones, amines, and trimethylsilyl cyanides in the presence of a catalytic amount of molecular iodine at room temperature.     

Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Architectures Using Chlorotetra(Pyrrole-2-Carboxylato)Diruthenium Molecules as Building Blocks

Two new complexes, based on the unit Ru₂Cl(μ-O₂CC₄H₄N)₄ (1) (O₂CC₄H₄N = pyrrole-2-carboxylate), Ru₂Cl(μ-O₂CC₄H₄N)₄(H₂O)·4H₂O [1(H ₂ O)·4H ₂ O], and Ru₂Cl(μ-O₂CC₄H₄N)₄(Me₂CO) [1(Me ₂ CO)], are synthesized and structurally characterized. The physical properties of these complexes are studied and compared with those previously reported for Ru₂Cl(μ-O₂CC₄H₄N)₄(thf)·thf·H₂O [1(thf)·thf·H ₂ O]. The nature of the solvent molecule bonded to the axial position of the dimetallic unit determines the supramolecular interactions leading to different arrangements in the solid state. The presence of NH groups in the pyrrolic rings favours the existence of hydrogen bond interactions that are present in the three complexes. In addition, complex 1(Me ₂ CO) shows π–π stacking interactions through pyrrolic rings of different dimetallic units. Dedicated to the memory of Prof. F. Albert Cotton.

The Raman spectrum of a dielectric substance deposited in a few microns thick film on a diffraction grating (aluminium coating), is obtained with a trapped laser beam inside the film. In order to assure the most efficient coupling, a single mode of propagation is excited in “reverse coupling”; the selection of groove spacing is discussed.     

Sur la synthèse d'alkoxy-2 nitro-3 2H-chroménes

2-Alkoxy-3-nitro-2H-chromenes have been obtained by the reaction of β-nitroacetaldehyde dialkyl acetals with some salicylic aldehydes in the presence of triethylamine p-toluene sulfonate.     

Determination of the piezoelectric constant d14 of trigonal selenium crystals

Using the gain-bandwidth method, the piezoelectric constant d₁₄ of trigonal selenium has been deduced from measurements of the admittance and the electromechanical resonance frequencies of appropriately cut bars. The value was found to be |d₁₄| = (2.54 ± 0.2) × 10^?2C/N.
