A probabilistic approach to antigen-antibody recognition

Expressions for the expected value and the variance of the longest matched segment on the surfaces of two random shapes are obtained. Applications of these estimates to antibody-antigen pattern recognition during immune response are considered. Methods of estimation of the involved probabilities are presented with relevant computational results.     

Quantification of eugenol, luteolin, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid in black (Krishna Tulasi) and green (Sri Tulasi) varieties of Ocimum sanctum Linn. using high-performance thin-layer chromatography

Ocimum sanctum (family Lamiaceae) is a reputed drug of Ayurveda, commonly known as Tulasi. In the present work, we quantified 4 marker compounds, viz., eugenol, luteolin, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid, from the leaf of green and black varieties of O. sanctum using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) with densitometry. The methods were found to be precise, with relative standard deviation (RSD) values for intraday analyses in the range of 0.52 to 0.91%, 0.77 to 1.29%, 0.11 to 0.16%, and 0.34 to 0.42% and for interday analyses in the range of 0.73 to 0.96%, 1.02 to 2.08%, 0.11 to 0.12%, and 0.39 to 0.64% for different concentrations of eugenol, luteolin, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid, respectively. Instrumental RSD values were 0.24, 0.39, 0.21, and 0.18% for eugenol, luteolin, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid, respectively. Accuracy of the methods was checked by conducting a recovery study at 3 different levels for the 4 compounds, and the average recoveries were found to be 99.73, 99.3, 100.58, and 100.57%, respectively. Eugenol content ranged from 0.175 to 0.362% (w/w) and luteolin from 0.019 to 0.046% (w/w) in the samples analyzed. Green variety was found to contain higher amounts of ursolic acid [0.478 and 0.348% (w/w), from Sources 1 and 2, respectively] than the black variety [0.252 and 0.264% (w/w) from Sources 1 and 2, respectively]. Black variety had 0.174 and 0.218% (w/w) of oleanolic acid from Sources 1 and 2, respectively, while it was not detected in the green variety. Ursolic acid and oleanolic acid ran at the same Rf value and could not be resolved in several solvent systems tried. However, we observed that only ursolic acid gave yellow fluorescence under 366 nm ultraviolet light after derivatization with anisaldehyde-sulfuric acid reagent. The HPTLC-densitometry methods for the quantification of the 4 markers in O. sanctum leaf will have the applicability in quality control.     

Polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by thiourea–chromium(VI) redox system

The kinetics of polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by Cr(VI)–thiourea and Cr(VI)–ethylene thiourea have been studied at 35, 40, and 45°C in nitrogen. The rates of polymerization and of disappearance of Cr(VI) were measured. Chromic acid alone did not initiate the polymerization under deaerated and undeaerated conditions. On the basis of the experimental observation of the dependence of the rate of polymerization R_p, the rate of Cr(VI) disappearance, –R_m, etc., on various variables, a suitable kinetic scheme was proposed and various rate and energy parameters were evaluated.     

Approximate sizes of monoatomic negative ions with fractional nuclear charge using electrostatic potentials

Summary Using the criterion that for negative monoatomic ions withN electrons, the location of minimum in the electrostatic potentialV(r) gives an approximate estimate of ionic radii,r _m. Calculations of the latter are reported for quark atoms with fractional nuclear chargesZ=N– andN– , respectively. Quark atoms withN=1–10, 18 and 36 have also been considered.     

OKRA (HIBISCUS ESCULENTUS) AND FENUGREEK (TRIGONELLA FOENUM GRACEUM) MUCILAGE: CHARACTERIZATION AND APPLICATION AS FLOCCULANTS FOR TEXTILE EFFLUENT TREATMENTS

The use of new food grade polysaccharides (mucilage) obtained from Hibiscus esculentus and Trigonella foenum graceum,commonly called Okra and Fenugreek,respectively,as flocculants was described.These polysaccharides were used for removal of solids (suspended solids (SS) and total dissolved solids (TDS)) and dyes from real textile effluents and aqueous solutions of different class of synthetic dyes.Influences of varying polysaccharide concentration,contact time and pH on removal of pollutant from the text...     

Studies on Spiroheterocycles,Part II: Heterocyclization of the Spiro Compounds Containing Cyclohexanone and Thiobarbituric Acid with Different Bidentate Nucleophilic Reagents

The reaction of thiobarbituric acid with different diarylidene ketones 1a–c yields the spiro compounds 2a–c. The diarylidene derivatives 3a–c are synthesized by the condensation of spiro compounds 2a–c with different aldehydes. A series of spiro heterocycles compounds 4a–l, 5a–l, 6a–l, 7a–l, 8a–l, and 9a–l are synthesized from the diarylidene compounds. The structures of the compounds are ascertained from their analytical and spectral data. Some of the compounds are screened for their biological activities.     

Understanding the Robustness of Dynamic model in Large Eddy Simulation

One of the main question faced by the large eddy simulation(LES) users is, why dynamic model works? Many authors have tried to answer this question with little sucess. In the present work we would like to show the insensitiveness of the dynamic model to the externaly introduced variation in the model coefficent, which proves the robustnessof the model.
