A biomimetic strategy for the synthesis of the tricyclic dibenzofuran-1,4-dione core of popolohuanone E

A concise synthesis of the complete tricyclic dibenzofuran-1,4-dione aromatic core of popolohuanone E has been demonstrated by mild base treatment of a biquinone intermediate, thus establishing a biomimetic route to this family of heterocyclic ring systems and the total synthesis of popolohuanone E.     

Multilevel structure of sludge flocs

In this work, the structure of two kaolin sludges and a waste activated sludge are investigated using both light-scattering and free-settling methods. Fractal dimensions estimated by the light-scattering and free-settling techniques (D(S) and D(F) respectively) differ significantly and support the hypothesis that naturally occurring aggregates possess a multilevel structure. A two-level floc structural model comprised of (i) a primary floc (of fractal dimension D(S)) consisting of primary particles and (ii) a secondary floc (of fractal dimension D(F)) consisting of the microflocs is proposed to interpret the experimental findings. The structural changes of sludge flocs before and after cationic flocculation are interpreted using the proposed two-level model.     

Iron(III) salen-type catalysts for the cross-coupling of aryl Grignards with alkyl halides bearing beta-hydrogens

Iron(III) salen and related complexes are active catalysts for the coupling, under mild and simple reaction conditions, of aryl Grignard reagents with primary and secondary alkyl halide substrates bearing beta-hydrogens.     

A convenient oxazole C-2 protecting group: the synthesis of 4- and 5-substituted oxazoles via metalation of 2-triisopropylsilyloxazoles

[reaction: see text] Metalation of oxazoles at the 4 and 5 position was achieved after regioselective C-2 silyl protection. Removal of the protecting group was then accomplished under mild conditions allowing for a straightforward preparation of C-5 monosubstituted and C-4,5 disubstituted oxazoles. The first practical C-2 protecting group of oxazoles has been demonstrated.     

Synthesis of cyclic (alpha(2)beta)-tripeptides as potential peptide turn mimetics

[reaction: see text] The solid-supported synthesis followed by cyclization in solution of cyclic (alpha(2)beta)-tripeptides, potential peptide beta-turn mimetics, is described. The cyclization takes advantage of facilitating the rotation between trans- and cis-rotamers of two amide bonds. The method is amenable to combinatorial approaches as is illustrated by the synthesis of a small array of cyclic (alpha(2)beta)-tripeptides.     

Analytical applications of ternary complexes-V Indirect spectrophotometric determination of cyanide

An indirect spectrophotometric method is proposed for the determination of cyanide down to 0.2 ppm. It is based on the fact that cyanide prevents the formation of the strongly absorbing ternary complex between silver(I), 1,10-phenanthroline and Bromopyrogallol Red in nearly neutral aqueous solution. Among 17 cations examined, only mercury(II) could not be tolerated. Zinc, cadmium and cobalt interfered only when present in large amounts. A 1000-fold molar excess (over cyanide) of 14 anions can also be tolerated. Bromide, iodide and thiocyanate interference is overcome by addition of lead nitrate, ammonium sulphate and barium nitrate, followed by centrifugation.     

Visual detection of cysteine and homocysteine

The determination of cysteine and homocysteine levels is of great current interest for the monitoring of desease states. A new colorimetric method for the simultaneous detection of l-cysteine and l-homocysteine has been developed. A fluorescein derivative reacts with the above amino acids, producing their respective thiazolidines resulting in color changes. Interference from other amino acids and proteins is minimal.     

Picosecond acoustic transmission measurements. II. Probing high frequency structural relaxation in supercooled glycerol

The high frequency acoustic response of liquids is measured in a manner directly analogous to conventional ultrasonic measurements. Two thin metal films act as acoustic transducer and receiver for a liquid layer between them. Pulsed optical excitation generates high bandwidth wave packets in the transducer, and these are detected in the receiver after damping and dispersion by the liquid. This initial measurement probes structural relaxation dynamics of glycerol in the frequency range 2-20 GHz, for temperatures between 235 and 291 K. The analysis presented here demonstrates the presence of excess relaxation, not accounted for by either the alpha or beta relaxation of the mode-coupling theory, and suggests the presence of constant loss in the susceptibility spectrum of supercooled glycerol.     

Chemistry of constrained dioxocyclam ligands with Co(III): unusual examples of C-H and C-N bond cleavage

The reactions between H(2)dc3 and Co(acac)(3) have been studied in the presence and absence of base. In the presence of base, a complex with an intramolecular Co-C bond, Co(dc3-C-(8))(H(2)O), 1, is formed, presumably through heterolytic C-H bond activation. An X-ray crystallographic study demonstrates the presence of a Co-C bond and shows that the diazacyclooctane (daco) subunit adopts the chair-boat conformation with respect to the metal. The cobalt-carbon bond induces strain in the macrocycle as demonstrated by bond angles significantly deviating from tetrahedral. The (13)C NMR resonance of the carbon atom bound to cobalt (-10.5 ppm) suggests significant ionic character in the cobalt-carbon bond. However, we were unable to cleave this bond in the presence of strong acid. In the absence of base, the reaction of Co(acac)(3) with H(2)dc3 resulted in C-N cleavage of the ligand and the formation of a complex of dioxocyclam, Co(dc)(acac), 2. This complex has subsequently been prepared in high yield by the reaction of Co(acac)(3) with dioxocyclam. An X-ray crystallographic study demonstrates that dioxocyclam adopts the heretofore unreported cis configuration, having folded along a N-Co-N axis that is perpendicular to the Co-acac plane.
