On the spectrum of the sum of generators for a finitely generated group

Let Γ be a finitely generated group. In the group algebra ℂ[Γ], form the averageh of a finite setS of generators of Γ. Given a unitary representation π of Γ, we relate spectral properties of the operator π(h) to properties of Γ and π. For the universal representationπ _un of Γ, we prove in particular the following results. First, the spectrum Sp(π _un (h)) contains the complex numberz of modulus one iff Sp(π _un (h)) is invariant under multiplication byz, iff there exists a character such that η(S)={z}. Second, forS ⁻¹=S, the group Γ has Kazhdan’s property (T) if and only if 1 is isolated in Sp(π _un (h)); in this case, the distance between 1 and other points of the spectrum gives a lower bound on the Kazhdan constants. Numerous examples illustrate the results.     

The classification of ϕ-symmetric Sasakian manifolds

A -symmetric spaceM is a complete connected regular Sasakian manifold, that fibers over an Hermitian symmetric spaceN, so that the geodesic involutions ofN lift to define global (involutive) automorphisms of the Sasakian structure onM. In the present paper the complete classification of -symmetric spaces is obtained. The groups of automorphisms of the Sasakian structures and the groups of isometries of the underlying Riemannian metrics are determined. As a corollary, the Sasakian space forms are also determined.     

Rigorous results on the thermodynamics of the dilute Hopfield model

We study the Hopfield model of an autoassociative memory on a random graph onN vertices where the probability of two vertices being joined by a link isp(N). Assuming thatp(N) goes to zero more slowly thanO(1/N), we prove the following results: (1) If the number of stored patternsm(N) is small enough such thatm(N)/Np(N) 0, asN, then the free energy of this model converges, upon proper rescaling, to that of the standard Curie-Weiss model, for almost all choices of the random graph and the random patterns. (2) If in additionm(N) < ln N/ln 2, we prove that there exists, forT< 1, a Gibbs measure associated to each original pattern, whereas for higher temperatures the Gibbs measure is unique. The basic technical result in the proofs is a uniform bound on the difference between the Hamiltonian on a random graph and its mean value.
