The strong mean shear in the vicinity of the boundaries in turbulent boundary layer flows preferentially amplifies a particular class of perturbations resulting in the appearance of coherent structures and in characteristic associated spatial and temporal velocity spectra. This enhanced response to certain perturbations can be traced to the nonnormality of the linearized dynamical operator through which transient growth arising in dynamical systems with asymptotically stable operators is expressed. This dynamical amplification process can be comprehensively probed by forcing the linearized operator associated with the boundary layer flow stochastically to obtain the statistically stationary response. In this work the spatial wave-number/temporal frequency spectra obtained by stochastically forcing the linearized model boundary layer operator associated with wall-bounded shear flow at large Reynolds number are compared with observations of boundary layer turbulence. The verisimilitude of the stochastically excited synthetic turbulence supports the identification of the underlying dynamics maintaining the turbulence with nonnormal perturbation growth. The precipitation of calcium carbonate as a binding salt for the consolidation of loose sand formations is a promising approach. The heterogeneous nucleation and growth of calcite were investigated in supersaturated solutions. The ionic activities in the solutions tested were selected so that they included both supersaturations in which crystal growth took place only following the introduction of seed particles and supersaturations in which precipitation occurred spontaneously past the lapse of induction times. In the latter case the supersaturation conditions were sufficiently low to allow the measurement of induction times preceding the onset of precipitation. The stability domain of the calcium carbonate system was established at pH 8.50, 25 degrees C, measuring the induction times in the range between 30 min and 2 h. The rates of precipitation following the destabilization of the solutions were measured from the pH and/or concentration-time profiles. The induction times were inversely proportional and rates proportional to the solution supersaturation as expected. The high-order dependence of the rates of precipitation on the solution supersaturation suggested a polynuclear growth mechanism. Fitting of the induction time-supersaturation data according to this model yielded a value of 64 mJ/m2 for the surface energy of the calcite nucleus. In the concentration domain corresponding to stable supersaturated solutions, seeded growth experiments at constant supersaturation showed a second-order dependence on the rates of crystal growth of calcite seed crystals. Inoculation of the stable supersaturated solutions with quartz seed crystals failed to induce nucleation. Raising supersaturation to reach the unstable domain showed interesting features: calcite seed crystals yielded crystal growth kinetics compatible with the polynuclear growth model, without any induction time. The presence of quartz seed crystals reduced the induction times and resulted in nucleation in the bulk solution. The kinetic data in the latter case were consistent with the polynuclear growth model and the surface energy for the newly forming embryo was calculated equal to 31.1 mJ/m2, because of the dominantly heterogeneous nature of the process.  相似文献

We study the dependence on ε in the critical dimension k(n,p,ε) for which one can find random sections of the ?pn-ball which are (1+ε)-spherical. We give lower (and upper) estimates for k(n,p,ε) for all eligible values p and ε as n, which agree with the sharp estimates for the extreme values p=1 and p=. In this paper, we analyze the recursive merge sort algorithm and quantify the deviation of the output from the correct sorted order if the outcomes of one or more comparisons are in error. The disorder in the output sequence is quantified by four measures: the number of runs, the smallest number of integers that need to be removed to leave the sequence sorted, the number of inversions, and the smallest number of successive exchanges needed to sort the sequence. For input sequences whose length is large compared to the number of errors, a comparison is made between the robustness to errors of bubble sort, straight insertion sort, and recursive merge sort.  相似文献

The adsorption of, the still widely used, herbicide atrazine on model soil components, such as humic acid and humic acid-silica gel mixtures, was investigated in a series of batch experiments, under different experimental conditions (ionic strength, temperature, and pH). The investigation aimed at obtaining an estimate of the contribution of each of the soil components on the adsorption of atrazine from aqueous solutions. The kinetics of atrazine adsorption on humic acid showed two steps: a fast step, of a few hours duration, and a second slow step, which continued for weeks. The kinetics of adsorption data gave a satisfactory fit to the Elovich equation. Τhe adsorption of atrazine on the test substrates was found to be reversible in all cases. The atrazine uptake data on the test substrates were fitted best with the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The ionic strength of the atrazine aqueous solutions did affect the amount of the atrazine adsorbed on the test substrates, suggesting that electrostatic forces between atrazine molecules and soil play a significant role in the adsorption process. An increase of temperature resulted in a decrease of atrazine adsorption on humic acid at low atrazine equilibrium concentrations. However, for higher levels of equilibrium concentrations (≥3 mg/L) the amount of atrazine adsorbed onto the test substrate increased as temperature increased. The calculated isosteric enthalpies of adsorption ranged between slightly exothermic at low atrazine uptake and slightly endothermic at high atrazine uptake, all values being in the range of physisorption.  相似文献

During this time, the pharmaceutical industry has changed dramatically as well, and continued evolution of the industry is assured. These changes present many challenges but also several opportunities for executing fragment-based drug design. This study investigated the feasibility of an MRI protocol providing whole-body T2* maps at 1.5 T. Seven healthy volunteers (mean age=30.1+/-3.7, three women and four men) and two patients (both male, 53 and 46 years old) affected by transfusion-dependent anemias participated in the study. Coronally oriented images of five subsequent body levels were acquired using a fat-suppressed multiecho 2D gradient-echo sequence (12 echo times ranging from 4.8 to 76.3 ms were selected) and afterwards composed. Parametrical T2* maps of the whole body were reconstructed on a pixel-by-pixel basis. For both, healthy volunteers and patients, representative T2* values were computed from extended regions of interest (ROIs). Good-quality whole-body T2* maps were computed in all volunteers and patients. In healthy volunteers, T2* values were assessed in the cerebral white (58.5+/-4.2 ms) and gray (81.4+/-5.5 ms) matter, liver (34.3+/-7.0 ms), spleen (63.5+/-3.3 ms), kidneys (65.4+/-10.3 ms) and skeletal muscles (~30 ms). The liver presented faster relaxation rates in males as compared to females. One patient (serum ferritin concentration=927 microg/dl) showed shortened T2* values in liver (3.6+/-5.5 ms), spleen (3.1+/-4.8 ms), kidneys (11.1+/-7.1 ms) and muscles (25.1+/-3.4 ms). The second patient (serum ferritin concentration=346 microg/dl) presented reduced T2* values in liver (3.9+/-7.3 ms), spleen (20.1+/-9.8 ms) and kidneys (24.6+/-7.7 ms). The presented technique may find clinical application in the assessment of the iron burden in the entire body, and in monitoring of chelation therapies in patients treated with frequent blood transfusions.  相似文献

DNA/RNA chromatography presents a versatile platform for the analysis of nucleic acids. Although the mechanism of separation of double stranded (ds) DNA fragments is largely understood, the mechanism by which RNA is separated appears more complicated. To further understand the separation mechanisms of RNA using ion pair reverse phase liquid chromatography, we have analysed a number of dsRNA and single stranded (ss) RNA fragments. The high-resolution separation of dsRNA was observed, in a similar manner to dsDNA under non-denaturing conditions. Moreover, the high-resolution separation of ssRNA was observed at high temperatures (75 °C) in contrast to ssDNA. It is proposed that the presence of duplex regions/secondary structures within the RNA remain at such temperatures, resulting in high-resolution RNA separations. The retention time of the nucleic acids reflects the relative hydrophobicity, through contributions of the nucleic sequence and the degree of secondary structure present. In addition, the analysis of RNA using such approaches was extended to enable the discrimination of bacterial 16S rRNA fragments and as an aid to conformational analysis of RNA. RNA:RNA interactions of the human telomerase RNA component (hTR) were analysed in conjunction with the incorporation of Mg2+ during chromatography. This novel chromatographic procedure permits analysis of the temperature dependent formation of dimeric RNA species.  相似文献

We present and compare third- as well as fifth-order accurate finite difference schemes for the numerical solution of the compressible ideal MHD equations in multiple spatial dimensions. The selected methods lean on four different reconstruction techniques based on recently improved versions of the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes, monotonicity preserving (MP) schemes as well as slope-limited polynomial reconstruction. The proposed numerical methods are highly accurate in smooth regions of the flow, avoid loss of accuracy in proximity of smooth extrema and provide sharp non-oscillatory transitions at discontinuities.  相似文献

In contrast to biomineralization phenomena, that are among the most widely studied topics in modern material and earth science and biomedicine, much less is systematized on modern view of demineralization. Biomineralized structures and tissues are composites, containing a biologically produced organic matrix and nano- or microscale amorphous or crystalline minerals. Demineralization is the process of removing the inorganic part, or the biominerals, that takes place in nature via either physiological or pathological pathways in organisms. In vitro demineralization processes, used to obtain mechanistic information, consist in the isolation of the mineral phase of the composite biomaterials from the organic matrix. Physiological and pathological demineralization include, for example, bone resorption mediated by osteoclasts. Bioerosion, a more general term for the process of deterioration of the composite biomaterials represents chemical deterioration of the organic and mineral phase followed by biological attack of the composite by microorganisms and enzymes. Bioerosional organisms are represented by endolithic cyanobacteria, fungi, algae, plants, sponges, phoronids and polychaetes, mollusks, fish and echinoids.In the history of demineralization studies, the driving force was based on problems of human health, mostly dental caries. In this paper we summarize and integrate a number of events, discoveries, milestone papers and books on different aspect of demineralization during the last 400 years. Overall, demineralization is a rapidly growing and challenging aspect of various scientific disciplines such as astrobiology, paleoclimatology, geomedicine, archaeology, geobiology, dentistry, histology, biotechnology, and others to mention just a few.  相似文献
