Kinetics and mechanism of the production of higher olefins from stearic acid in the presence of an alumina-supported nickel sulfide catalyst

A nickel sulfide catalyst which efficient in the decarbonylation of fatty acids to olefins and dienes has been obtained for the first time by treating alumina-supported nickel sulfate with hydrogen, and its properties have been studied. In its presence, the olefin selectivity of the reaction can exceed 90%. The kinetics of stearic acid deoxygenation to heptadecenes has been investigated, a kinetic model has been constructed, and a mechanism has been proposed for the reaction over this catalyst. Olefin oligomerization is the dominant side reaction. Kinetic evidence for the catalytic inhibition of oligomerization by nickel hydrides formed on the catalyst has been obtained. The compositions of active site–reactant adsorption complexes have been discussed.     

Substituted benzotriazoles as inhibitors of copper corrosion in borate buffer solutions

The adsorption of substituted 1,2,3-benzotriazoles (R-BTAs) onto copper is measured via ellipsometry in a pure borate buffer (pH 7.4) and satisfactorily described by Temkin’s isotherm. The adsorption free energy (?ΔG _a ⁰ ) values of these azoles are determined. The (?ΔG _a ⁰ ) values are found to rise as their hydrophobicity, characterized by the logarithm of the partition coefficient of a substituted BTA in a model octanol–water system (logP), grows. The minimum concentration sufficient for the spontaneous passivation of copper (C _min) and a shift in the potential of local copper depassivation with chlorides (E _pt) after an azole is added to the solution (i.e., ΔE = E _pt ⁱⁿ ? E _pt ^backgr characterizing the ability of its adsorption to stabilize passivation) are determined in the same solution containing a corrosion additive (0.01М NaCl) for each azole under study. Both criteria of the passivating properties of azoles (logC _min and ΔE) are shown to correlate linearly with logP, testifying to the role played by surface activity of this family of organic inhibitors in protecting copper in an aqueous solution.

Aqueous and nonaqueous lithium-air batteries enabled by water-stable lithium metal electrodes

The extremely high theoretical energy density of the lithium-oxygen couple makes it very attractive for next-generation battery development. However, there are a number of challenging technical hurdles that must be addressed for Li-Air batteries to become a commercial reality. In this article, we demonstrate how the invention of water-stable, solid electrolyte-protected lithium electrodes solves many of these issues and paves the way for the development of aqueous and nonaqueous Li-Air batteries with unprecedented energy densities. We also show data for fully packaged Li-Air cells that achieve more than 800 Wh/kg.     

N,N′-Disubstituted phenanthrene-9,10-diimines: synthesis and NMR spectroscopic study

Novel aryl-aryl, alkyl-alkyl, aryl-alkyl N,N′-disubstituted phenanthrene-9,10-diimines were synthesized by condensation of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone with primary amines. The novel two-stage method of synthesis of disubstituted phenanthrene-9,10-diimines with identical or different aryl and alkyl substituents at the nitrogen atom was established. The investigated compounds undergo slow Z-E/E-Z interconversion which was studied by NMR spectroscopy. Thermodynamic parameters of interconversion were obtained by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy.
