Roussel and Rubio proved a lemma which is essential in the proof of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. We give a new short proof of the main case of this lemma. In this note, we also give a short proof of Hayward’s decomposition theorem for weakly chordal graphs, relying on a Roussel–Rubio-type lemma. We recall how Roussel–Rubio-type lemmas yield very short proofs of the existence of even pairs in weakly chordal graphs and Meyniel graphs.  相似文献

Learning to teach is difficult for prospective teachers because of the complex nature of the work of teaching. Practicing (Lampert in J Teach Educ 61(1–2):21–34, 2010), interacting with the practice of teaching from a first-person perspective, may give them a unique experience in learning to teach. Computer-based simulators in which the apprentice teacher can interact with virtual students may be used to create that kind of experience. In this paper, we show how to apply techniques in artificial intelligence to design an intelligent learning environment. We show how to model the apprentice’s decision making and resources that can help him or her improve the practice of teaching.  相似文献

This article is concerned with multivariate density estimation. We discuss deficiencies in two popular multivariate density estimators—mixture and copula estimators, and propose a new class of estimators that combines the advantages of both mixture and copula modeling, while being more robust to their weaknesses. Our method adapts any multivariate density estimator using information obtained by separately estimating the marginals. We propose two marginally adapted estimators based on a multivariate mixture of normals and a mixture of factor analyzers estimators. These estimators are implemented using computationally efficient split-and-elimination variational Bayes algorithms. It is shown through simulation and real-data examples that the marginally adapted estimators are capable of improving on their original estimators and compare favorably with other existing methods. In the late 1950s, B. Segre introduced the fundamental notion of arcs and complete arcs [48,49]. An arc in a nite projective plane is a set of points with no three on a line and it is complete if cannot be extended without violating this property. Given a projective plane , determining , the size of its smallest complete arc, has been a major open question in finite geometry for several decades. Assume that has order q, it was shown by Lunelli and Sce [41], more than 40 years ago, that . Apart from this bound, practically nothing was known about , except for the case is the Galois plane. For this case, the best upper bound, prior to this paper, was O(q 3/4) obtained by Sznyi using the properties of the Galois field GF(q).In this paper, we prove that for any projective plane of order q, where c is a universal constant. Together with Lunelli-Sces lower bound, our result determines up to a polylogarithmic factor. Our proof uses a probabilistic method known as the dynamic random construction or Rödls nibble. The proof also gives a quick randomized algorithm which produces a small complete arc with high probability.The key ingredient of our proof is a new concentration result, which applies for non-Lipschitz functions and is of independent interest.* Research supported in part by grant RB091G-VU from UCSD, by NSF grant DMS-0200357 and by an A. In this paper, we deal with the nonlocal Cauchy problem for a class of two-term time fractional differential equations in Banach spaces. We prove some Picone-type identities and inequalities for a class of first-order nonlinear dynamic systems and derive various weighted inequalities of Wirtinger type and Hardy type on time scales. As applications we study oscillatory and related properties of these systems including Reid's roundabout theorem on disconjugacy, Sturm's separation and comparison theorems, as well as a variational method in the oscillation theory.  相似文献

We provide a direct computational proof of the known inclusion where is the product Hardy space defined for example by R. Fefferman and is the classical Hardy space used, for example, by E.M. Stein. We introduce a third space of Hardy type and analyze the interrelations among these spaces. We give simple sufficient conditions for a given function of two variables to be the double Fourier transform of a function in and respectively. In particular, we obtain a broad class of multipliers on and respectively. The paper is concerned with the modelling, simulation and experimental characterisation of local shrinkage strains and stresses induced by thermo-oxidation phenomena in the IM7/977-2 carbon/epoxy composite material at elevated temperatures. The oxygen concentration and mechanical fields were established through a coupled model constructed from a unified multiphysical approach and the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The model was implemented in the ABAQUS® finite element commercial code. Simulations of thermo-oxidation-induced matrix shrinkage were run at a local scale, i.e., the scale of the elementary constituents of the composite, the fibre and the matrix. The experimental assessment was done at the same scale, and the local matrix shrinkage profiles were measured by confocal interferometric microscopy.A good agreement was found between the simulated and measured profiles, validating the unified model. The thermo-oxidation induced stress field was analysed to understand the influence of the environment on the onset of damage in composite materials at elevated temperature.  相似文献
