A novel and expeditious approach to unusual spirolactam building blocks

A rapid access to 7-azaspiro[4.5]decan-6-ones 1 involving three regio- and chemoselective reactions starting from tetrabromonorbornyl derivatives is described. The alkaline H(2)O(2) cleavage reaction of monosubstituted alpha-diketones 9 furnished the potential bridged bicyclic lactones 10in a highly regio- and stereoselective manner. The radical-mediated, intermolecular bridgehead C-C bond formation of the versatile bridged lactones 10 with acrylonitrile followed by LAH reduction of the adduct 13 intriguingly leads to the formation of novel spirolactam building blocks 1.     

Thermodynamic dissociation constants of salicylic and monochloroacetic acids in mixed solvent systems from conductance measurements at 25°C

The molar conductances of dilute solutions of salicylic and monochloroacetic acids in binary mixtures of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, N,N-dimethylformamide, acetone, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane with water have been measured at 25°C. The Lee-Wheaton conductance equation was fitted to the data in order to derive thermodynamic dissociation constants and limiting molar conductances. The results were compared with those in the literature pertaining to analogous media, mostly derived potentiometrically. The findings are interpreted in terms of a solvent effect on the ionization of these acids in mixed solvent systems.This paper is dedicated to the late Professor Raymond M. Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Activity of n-Tributyltin Derivatives of Pharmaceutically Active Carboxylates

Summary.  Tributyltin(IV) derivatives of six different pharmaceutically active carboxylates were synthesized. The complexes were characterized by different analytical techniques (elemental analysis; infrared, NMR, and mass spectroscopy). ¹¹⁹Sn NMR data were also recorded in six different coordinating and non-coordinating solvents. The antibacterial activities of the compounds were tested using ten different bacteria relative to the reference drugs ampicillin and cephalexin. Received September 20, 2001. Three new cholinesterase-inhibiting cis-clerodane diterpenoids from Otostegia limbata

Three new tricyclic cis-clerodane type diterpenoids trivially named as limbatolide A (1), limbatolide B (2) and limbatolide C (3) have been isolated from the roots of Otostegia limbata along with two known compounds; oleanic acid and beta-sitosterol. The structure elucidation of the new compounds was based primarily on two-dimensional (2D) NMR techniques. Compounds 1-3 displayed inhibitory potential in a concentration-dependent manner against acetylcholinesterase (AChE; EC 3.1.1.7) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE; EC 3.1.1.8) enzymes, respectively.     

Hetarylpyrazoles. II. Reactions of pyrazol-l'-ylpyridines

Pyrazol-l'-ylpyridines undergo electrophilic substitution reactions (bromination, chlorination, and nitration) preferentially in the pyrazole ring. There is some evidence of the mutual influence of the pyrazole and the pyridine ring on the reactivity of the system. Some modifications of the substituents were also carried out. A dihydro derivative of a new ring system, pyrazolo[1′,2′-a]pyrido[2,1-c][l,2,4]triazine was also obtained.     

Deprotection of Thioacetals Using K2S2O8/[bmim]Br as a Mild and Efficient Reagent under Solvent-Free Conditions

Summary. A straightforward and effective procedure for the deprotection of thioacetals to the corresponding carbonyl compounds using potassium persulfate and the ionic liquid [bmim]Br under solvent-free conditions is reported. A variety of aliphatic and aromatic 1,3-dithiolanes or 1,3-dithanes was deprotected to the corresponding carbonyl derivatives by this procedure.     

Structure determination of bioactive galloyl derivatives by NMR spectroscopy

The investigation of the chemical constituents of Symplocos racemosa Roxb led to the isolation of two new glycosides, symcomoside A (1) and symcomoside B (2), together with one known glycoside, tortoside C (3), which is reported for the first time from this plant. The structures of the new compounds were determined by 1D and 2D homonuclear and heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy, from chemical evidence and by comparison with published data for closely related compounds. Symcomoside B (2) showed potent inhibitory activity against alpha-glucosidase in a concentration-dependent fashion with an IC50 value of 0.733 +/- 0.033 mM whereas symcomoside A (1) showed very weak inhibitory activity against alpha-glucosidase (9.90% in 0.70 mM).

Pyranopyrazoles. II. Synthesis and reactions of 1H,6H-pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazol-6-ones

Various 1H,6H-pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazol-6-ones (III-XXIII) were obtained from β-keto esters and 1H-pyrazol-5-ones or hydrazines. Nitrations, chlorinations and brominations of these pyranopyrazoles were also carried out giving the corresponding derivatives (XXIV-LXIV). The pyrone ring is the more reactive one in these reactions and the preferred position of attack is the 5-position. The substitution products are formed by the addition-elimination route.     

Electrode Kinetics and Ternary Complex Formation of Cd2+‐Antibiotics‐Vitamin‐B5 System. A Polarographic Study

Cd²⁺ complexes with antibiotics viz. neomycin, chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, penicillin‐V and penicillin‐G as primary ligands and vitamin‐B₅ as secondary ligand have been reported at pH = 7.30 ± 0.01 and μ = 1.0 M KNO₃ at 298 K by polarographic technique.¹ Cd²⁺ formed 1:1:1, 1:1:2, and 1:2:1 complexes with a stability constants trend of neomycin < chlortetracycline < oxytetracycline < tetracycline < penicillin‐V < penicillin‐G can be explained on the basis of the nature of ligands, bonding, and steric hindrance of these drugs. The nature of electrode processes were reversible and diffusion controlled. The values of stability constants showed that these drugs can be used to reduce the toxicity of Cd.
