Formation of columns of anomalous water by condensation in quartz capillaries

It is shown that these columns are formed in the kinetic mode from unsaturated water vapor. The condensation coefficient for an anomalous column is much less than for ordinary water. The growth rate is dependent on the equilibration time for the concentration of the anomalous component in the column. The diffusion coefficient for the anomalous component in water is less than the self-diffusion coefficient of water by nearly an order of magnitude; this and the low volatility are to be ascribed to large molecular size. It is supposed that the molecules of the anomalous component are strong groups of H₂O molecules that are only slowly converted to monomers.

Partition constants of α-aminophosphonates in two-phase aqueous-organic solvent systems

Two-phase potentiometric titration was used to determine partition constants for a series of -aminophosphonates (RO)₂P(O)CH₂NR¹R² [R = Alk (C₂-C₅), R¹, R² = Me, Et, (CH₂)₅] between water and organic solvents, such as chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, octane, n-octanol, nitrobenzene, o-xylene, and cyclohexane. Correlations between the partition constants and the number of carbon atoms in substrate molecules were obtained. Stereostructure of 2-ethynyl-substituted 2,4,4-trimethyl-1,3-dioxanes

It has been shown by PMR spectrometry and x-ray structure analysis that the six-membered 1,3-dioxane ring of 2-ethynyl-substituted 2,4,4-trimethyl-1,3-dioxanes, either in solution or in the solid state, exists in a nearly ideal chair conformation with an axial position of the ethynyl substituent. Insect pheromones and their analogs. VIII. Synthesis of the (Z) and (E) isomers of 2-methyloctadec-7-ene and of 2-methyl-7,8-epoxyoctadecane

A highly stereospecific method for the synthesis of racemic (Z)-disparlure has been developed which is based on the reduction of 2-methyloctadec-7-yne with the aid of 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane and the epoxidation of the resulting (Z)-2-methyloctadec-7-ene with p-methoxycarbonylperbenzoic acid. The¹³C NMR spectra of the (Z) and (E) isomers of 2-methyloctadec-7-ene and 2-methyl-7,8-epoxyoctadecane, which unambiguously confirm the structures of these compounds, are given. It has been established that (E)-2-methyloctadec-7-ene exhibits a moderate attractant activity while the (Z) isomer does not attract the gypsy moth.
