Lower Bounds on Scalar Dissipation in Bounded Rectilinear Flows

Lower bounds on the scalar dissipation rate in rectilinear flows are found for three sets of constraints. The bounding dissipation rates provide upper bound estimates of the scalar concentration variance. One of the lower bounds on the dissipation rate is close to the dissipation rate assessed from detailed numerical simulation. This proximity enables a simplified model of concentration variance. For a pulse input of solute, the predictions of concentration variance by the simplified model are in agreement with the results of detailed simulation. The large-time bimodality of the concentration variance and its rate of decay observed in the detailed numerical simulations is predicted by the simplified model.     

Synthesis and Evaluation of Substituted Pyrazoles: Potential Antimalarials Targeting the Enoyl‐ACP Reductase of Plasmodium Falciparum

A series of 1,5‐ and 1,3‐diarylsubstituted pyrazoles were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their ability to inhibit enoyl‐ACP reductase of Plasmodium falciparum. The inhibitory activity of these synthesized compounds was evaluated in a continuous spectrophotometric assay. Of all the compounds analyzed, NAS‐81 and NAS‐39 inhibited the enzyme with IC₅₀ values of 30 µM and 50 µM, respectively. The mode of ligand binding was investigated by docking the synthetic inhibitors at the active site of the crystal structure of the enzyme.     

Potential Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitory Activity of Endophytic Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae

Xanthine oxidase is considered as a potential target for treatment of hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia is predisposing factor for gout, chronic heart failure, atherosclerosis, tissue injury, and ischemia. To date, only two inhibitors of xanthine oxidase viz. allopurinol and febuxostat have been clinically approved for used as drugs. In the process of searching for new xanthine oxidase inhibitors, we screened culture filtrates of 42 endophytic fungi using in vitro qualitative and quantitative XO inhibitory assays. The qualitative assay exhibited potential XO inhibition by culture filtrates of four isolates viz. #1048 AMSTITYEL, #2CCSTITD, #6AMLWLS, and #96 CMSTITNEY. The XO inhibitory activity was present only in the chloroform extract of the culture filtrates. Chloroform extract of culture filtrate #1048 AMSTITYEL exhibited the highest inhibition of XO with an IC₅₀ value of 0.61 μg ml^?1 which was better than allopurinol exhibiting an IC₅₀ of 0.937 μg ml^?1 while febuxostat exhibited a much lower IC₅₀ of 0.076 μg ml^?1. Further, molecular phylogenetic tools and morphological studies were used to identify #1048 AMSTITYEL as Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae. This is the first report of an endophytic Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae from Aegle marmelos exhibiting potential XO Inhibitory activity.     

Effect of Silk Fibroin Reinforcement on the Properties of Potato Starch-Polyvinyl Alcohol Blend Films

Starch and polyvinyl alcohol composite films, reinforced with raw and methylmethacrylate-grafted silk fibroin particles, were prepared by the solution-casting method on leveled plates. Silk fibroin was used as reinforcement for starch and polyvinyl alcohol (St/PVA) blends in order to improve their mechanical and water-resistance properties. The composites were plasticized with citric acid and cross-linked with gluteraldehyde. The reinforced films showed an increase in tensile strength with decrease in elongation at break. The optimized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and were studied for their antibacterial properties. The biodegradable behavior was studied by the soil burial method.     

An Efficient Algorithm for Euclidean Shortest Paths Among Polygonal Obstacles in the Plane

We give an algorithm to compute a (Euclidean) shortest path in a polygon with h holes and a total of n vertices. The algorithm uses O(n) space and requires time. Received March 30, 1993, and in revised form August 26, 1994, and May 1, 1997.     

‘Counter-intuitive’ regioselectivity, subtle steric and solvation effects in lithiation of cyclic tertiary aralkylamines

Lithiation of a series of cyclic aralkyl tertiary amines with sec-BuLi in various solvents has been studied. There is a subtle sensitivity to steric factors and lithium coordinating solvents/additives have an adverse effect. ortho-Lithiation is observed only in the case of an eight-membered cyclic amine and the ease of benzylic lithiation with respect to nitrogen is in the surprising order γ > β ? α, δ. These observations are discussed in the context of nitrogen coordination promoted lithiation.
