The set of mapsF_{a,b} :x \mapsto x + a + \tfrac{b}{{2\pi }} sin(2πx) with any given rotation interval is contractiblewith any given rotation interval is contractible

Consider the two-parameter family of real analytic maps $F_{a,b} :x \mapsto x + a + \tfrac{b}{{2\pi }}$ sin(2πx) which are lifts of degree one endomorphisms of the circle. The purpose of this paper is to provide a proof that for any closed intervalI, the set of mapsF _a,b whose rotation interval isI, form a contractible set.     

Energy-level statistics of model quantum systems: Universality and scaling in a lattice-point problem

We investigate the statistics of the numberN(R, S) of lattice pointsnZ ², in an annular domain (R, w)=(R+w)A\RA, whereR, w>0. HereA is a fixed convex set with smooth boundary andw is chosen so that the area of (R, w) isS. The statistics comes fromR being taken as random (with a smooth density) in some interval [c ₁ T,c ₂,T],c ₂>c ₁>0. We find that in the limitT the variance and distribution of N=N(R; S)–S depend strongly on howS grows withT. There is a saturation regimeS/T, asT, in which the fluctuations in N coming from the two boundaries of are independent. Then there is a scaling regime,S/Tz, 0<z<, in which the distribution depends onz in an almost periodic way going to a Gaussian asz0. The variance in this limit approachesz for genericA, but can be larger for degenerate cases. The former behavior is what one would expect from the Poisson limit of a distribution for annuli of finite area.     

A “Multiplicative Coboundary” theorem for some sequences of random matrices

Schmidt(¹⁰) showed that if the family of distributions of the partial sums of a strictly stationary random sequence is tight, then that random sequence is a coboundary. Here an analog of that result is proved for some sequences of random matrices, with partial sums replaced by matrix products.     

Cyclic homology for schemes

Using hypercohomology, we can extend cyclic homology from algebras to all schemes over a ring . By `extend' we mean that the usual cyclic homology of any commutative algebra agrees with the cyclic homology of its corresponding affine scheme.

Production of relativistic antihydrogen atoms by pair production with positron capture and measurement of the Lamb shift

A beam of relativistic antihydrogen atoms — the bound state ( e⁺) — can be created by circulating the beam of an antiproton storage ring through an internal gas target. An antiproton which passes through the Coulomb field of a nucleus will create e⁺e⁻ pairs, and antihydrogen will form when a positron is created in a bound instead of continuum state about the antiproton. The cross section for this process is roughly 3Z ² pb for antiproton momenta about 6 GeV/c. A sample of 600 antihydrogen atoms in a low-emittance, neutral beam will be made in 1995 as an accidental byproduct of Fermilab experiment E760. We describe a simple experiment, Fermilab Proposal P862, which can detect this beam, and outline how a sample of a few-10⁴ atoms can be used to measure the antihydrogen Lamb shift to 1 %. Ferrocene studies. IV. Some furan containing derivatives of ferrocene

The condensation of ferrocenecarboxyhydrazide, ferrocenecarboxaldehyde and acetylferrocene with a number of furan derivatives is reported. The reaction of chalcones containing both the furan and the ferrocene nucleus with Phenylhydrazine and hydrazine proceeds to yield pyrazolines.
