Competitive influence of atactic polystyrene and supercritical carbon dioxide on the conformation of syndiotactic polystyrene

The crystallization behavior of miscible syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and atactic polystyrene (aPS) blends with different sPS/aPS weight ratios was investigated in supercritical CO₂ by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Supercritical CO₂ and aPS exhibited different effects on the conformational change of sPS and competed with each other. Increasing the content of amorphous aPS in the blends made its effect on the conformational change of sPS gradually surpass that of supercritical CO₂. Supercritical CO₂ favored the formation of the helical conformation of sPS in lower temperature range and the all trans planar conformation in higher temperature range, instead of forming the latter one only in higher temperature range in ambient atmosphere. However, increasing aPS content in the blends pushed the range for forming the helical conformation to lower temperature and made the all trans planar conformation dominant in aPS/sPS 25/75 blend after treating in supercritical CO₂ above 60 °C. The all trans planar zigzag conformation was more favorable than the helical conformation after mixing aPS in sPS in supercritical CO₂. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An algorithm for three-way data analysis that alternatively minimizes coupled vector (COV) resolution error and PARAFAC error.

A novel algorithm, alternatively minimizing coupled vector (COV) resolution error and PARAFAC error algorithm, is proposed in this paper. This algorithm can overcome the problem of slow convergence and is insensitive to the estimation of component number, such problems are unavoidable while using the traditional parallel factors analysis (PARAFAC) algorithm. In other words, this algorithm is capable of improving the computing speed and providing accurate resolutions provided that the number of factors used in the computation is no less than that of the actual underlying ones. The characteristic performances were demonstrated with a novel fluorescence data array.

Preparation and characterization of optically active polystyrene via a chiral nitroxide‐mediated polymerization

2,2,6,6‐Tetramethyl‐4‐[d‐(+)‐10‐camphorsulfonyl]‐1‐piperidinyloxy was synthesized and used as a chiral nitroxide for the bulk polymerizations of styrene initiated with benzoyl peroxide (BPO), tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TETD), and thermal initiation. The results showed that the polymerizations proceeded in a controlled/living way; that is, the kinetics presented approximately first‐order plots, and the number‐average molecular weights of the polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight) increased with the monomer conversion linearly. The molecular weight distributions in the case of thermal initiation were narrower than those in the case of BPO and TETD, whereas the polymerization rate with BPO or TETD as an initiator was obviously faster than that with thermal initiation. In addition, successful chain‐extension reactions were carried out, and the structures of the obtained polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and ¹H NMR. Coriatone and corianlactone, two novel sesquiterpenes from Coriaria nepalensis

Both coriatone (1). a novel highly oxygenated picrotoxane-type sesquiterpene, and corianlactone (2). with an unprecedented sesquiterpene basic skeleton, named coriane, were isolated from Coriaria nepalensis Wall. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by analysis of their two-dimensional NMR data, and the structure of 2 was confirmed by X-ray analysis. Compounds 1 and 2 showed no remarkable inhibitory activity toward K(562) cells. They are cytotoxic with IC(50) > 50 microg/mL (cis-platinim: IC(50) = 0.49 microg/mL).     

Calculation of binding energy differences for receptor–ligand systems using the Poisson-Boltzmann method

An approach using the finite difference solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation to estimate binding free energy changes for two receptor–ligand systems, arabinose binding protein and sulfate binding protein, is presented. The eight calculated binding free energy changes agree with experiment, showing a correlation coefficient of 0.92 and energy deviations of 1 kcal/mol or less. More importantly, the decomposition of solvation and assembly energies in this approach provides an understanding of binding mechanisms and therefore could suggest directions to alter binding affinities. The method is demonstrated to be useful in analyzing experimental binding structures and predicting binding effects of mutants or modified ligands for macromolecular systems, in which the electrostatic forces dominate the overall interaction and the structural perturbations upon modifications are small. © 1995 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

基于在弱硫酸介质中及活化剂邻菲罗啉存在下 ,微量铁对溴酸钾氧化胭脂红的褪色反应有强烈的催化作用 ,由此建立了催化光度法测定微量铁的方法。该方法的检出限为 1.2× 10 - 10 g·ml- 1,测定范围为 0～ 0 .2 μg/2 5ml ,催化反应的表观活化能为 15 2 .7kJ·mol- 1。方法应用于大米、水样中微量铁的测定 ,结果满意。     

Calculation of χ)(3) in He including configuration interaction for XUV photons

We calculate the third-order susceptibility in He for photon energies from 19.5 eV to 24.5 eV in a configuration-interaction calculation, and discuss the role of autoionizing states as a means of enhancing harmonic generation.
