We present a method to suppress the roughness of the potential of a wire-based, magnetic atom guide: modulating the wire current at a few tens of kHz, the potential roughness, which is proportional to the wire current, averages to zero. Using ultracold 87Rb clouds, we show experimentally that modulation reduces the roughness by at least a factor five without measurable heating or atom loss. This roughness suppression results in a dramatic reduction of the damping of center-of-mass oscillations.  相似文献

Experimental results are reported on second harmonic generation and self-action in a noncohesive granular medium supporting wave energy propagation both in the solid frame and in the saturating fluid. The acoustic transfer function of the probed granular slab can be separated into two main frequency regions: a low frequency region where the wave propagation is controlled by the solid skeleton elastic properties, and a higher frequency region where the behavior is dominantly due to the air saturating the beads. Experimental results agree well with a recently developed nonlinear Biot wave model applied to granular media. The linear transfer function, second harmonic generation, and self-action effect are studied as a function of bead diameter, compaction step, excitation amplitude, and frequency. This parametric study allows one to isolate different propagation regimes involving a range of described and interpreted linear and nonlinear processes that are encountered in granular media experiments. In particular, a theoretical interpretation is proposed for the observed strong self-action effect.  相似文献

Using inelastic x-ray scattering we studied the collective dynamics of the glassy alloy Ni33Zr67 in the first pseudo-Brillouin-zone, an energy-momentum region still unexplored in metallic glasses. We determine key properties such as the momentum transfer dependence of the sound velocity and of the acoustic damping, discussing the results in the general context of recently proposed pictures for acoustic dynamics in glasses. Specifically, we demonstrate the existence in this strong glass of well defined (in the Ioffe-Regel sense) acoustic-like excitations well above the boson peak energy.  相似文献

We report on an original technique for the in situ coating of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchannels with borosilicate glass, starting from an active nonaqueous and alkali-free precursor solution. By chemical reaction of this active solution inside the microchannel and subsequent thermal annealing, a protective and chemically inert glass borosilicate coating is bonded to the PDMS. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the active solution show that it is composed of a silicon oxide network with boron connectivity. Thermal gravimetric analysis demonstrates the absence of organic content when curing is done above 150 degrees C. The borosilicate nature of the glass coating covalently bonded to the PDMS is demonstrated using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy show a smooth and crack-free coating. The latter is used as an efficient protective barrier against diffusion in PDMS of fluorescent rhodamine B dye that is dissolved either in water or in toluene. Moreover, the coating prevents swelling and consequent structural damage of the PDMS when the latter is exposed to harsh chemicals such as toluene.  相似文献

However, some fundamental questions have remained unexplored. This paper identifies the more challenging open questions in the field of stochastic programming. Some are purely technical in nature, but many also go to the foundations of designing models for decision making under uncertainty. We report in situ measurements of density fluctuations in a quasi-one-dimensional 87Rb Bose gas at thermal equilibrium in an elongated harmonic trap. We observe an excess of fluctuations compared to the shot-noise level expected for uncorrelated atoms. At low atomic density, the measured excess is in good agreement with the expected "bunching" for an ideal Bose gas. At high density, the measured fluctuations are strongly reduced compared to the ideal gas case. We attribute this reduction to repulsive interatomic interactions. The data are compared with a calculation for an interacting Bose gas in the quasicondensate regime.  相似文献

The infrared spectra of water confined in well controlled pore glasses were recorded as a function of the pore size ranging from 8 to 320 nm and in the 30-4000 cm(-1) spectral range using the ATR technique. The experiments prove that even in the large pores, the water network is significantly perturbed. The energy of the connectivity (or hindered translation) band (around 150 cm(-1)) is found to increase when the pore size decreases, indicating that confinement increases the H-bonding between neighbouring water molecules. Moreover, a drastic decrease of the FWHM of the connectivity band was observed upon confinement. This can be related to some ordering induced by the rigid walls of the pores. Furthermore, the partial filling of pores causes a significant modification to the water network, resembling heating of the trapped liquid and suggesting a role played by the water/air interface.  相似文献

In view of their easy preparation, the physicochemical properties of a series of highly fluorinated cationic (ammonium salts), zwitterionic (carboxybetaines) or nonionic (amine oxide) surfactants derived from perfluoroalkylated tertiary amines were investigated. Their solubility in water, interfacial properties and the exceptionally low hemolytic activity of the zwitterionic series mark them out as potential surfactants or co-surfactants for the preparation of fluorocarbon emulsions and other preparations for biomedical use. Fine and moderately concentrated fluorocarbon emulsions (50 w/w% in fluorocarbon) could be obtained in some cases when they were used as the sole surfactant. However, none was found suitable for preparing concentrated emulsions (90 w/v% in fluorocarbon) and no appreciable stabilization was found when they were used as co-surfactants with egg yolk phospholipids.  相似文献

129Xe NMR spectroscopy has been used to study the adsorption of Xe on multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The results obtained have shown the 129Xe NMR ability to probe the intercrystalline (aggregate) and the inner porosity of CNT. In particular, the effects on porosity of tubes openings by hydrogen exposure and of ball milling were examined. Dramatic changes observed in the 129Xe NMR spectra after moderate ball milling of MWCNTs were attributed to the destruction of the initial intercrystalline pore structure and to the Xe access inside the nanotubes. To examine the exchange dynamics the mixture of as-made and milled MWCNTs was studied with one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) 129Xe NMR. The exchange between the interior of milled nanotubes and the aggregate pores of as-made MWCNTs was fast on the NMR acquisition time scale. The Xenon exchange between the interior of the as-made MWCNTs and the large aggregate pores occurred on a longer time scale of 10 ms, as was established by 2D 129Xe NMR exchange spectroscopy. Variable temperature 129Xe NMR data were also discussed and analyzed in terms of the fast exchange approximation.  相似文献
