Influence of structural relaxation on the magnetic permeability aftereffect of amorphous ferromagnetic alloys

Room temperature measurements of the aftereffect of the magnetic permeability have been performed on amorphous Fe-(Cu--Cr)-B ribbons annealed at various temperatures. The results, in good agreement with the predictions of a new theory, give information on the effect of structural relaxation on the shear stress defects responsible for the magnetic aftereffect.     

A novel method for the terpene synthesis by the ring-opening reaction of β-methyl-β-propiolactone

A new route for the terpene synthesis is investigated, which undergoes via terpene carboxylic acids as key intermediates obtained by the regiospecific ring opening of β-methyl-β-propiolactone with a cuprate or with a Grignard reagent in the presence of a copper catalyst.     

An efficient intersystem crossing mechanism revealed by a large temperature effect on the photochemical reactions of 9-α-Bromopropionylanthracene

A significant temperature effect on the new photochemical reactions of 9-α-bromopropionylanthracene has been noted. In comparison to the temperature effect on the fluorescence intensity of 9-propionylanthracene, it was suggested that the rotation of the carbonyl group on photo-excitation might operate as an enhancing factor in the intersystem crossing process.     

Non-specific abnormality (so called "hot spot") on 99mTc-phytate liver scintigraphy of patients associated with superior vena caval syndrome (author's transl)

We have recently observed two patients with superior vena caval syndrome who showed a unique abnormality, so called "Hot Spot", on the 99mTc-phytate liver scintigraphy. This phenomenon seems to be related to the collateral venous circulation. It is supposed that its manifestation depends on the degree of venous dilatation of the chest and abdominal wall.     

Synthesis of new crown ethers and their metal complexes: 1H and 13C NMR study

A new type of crown ethers containing a diphenyl ether unit has been prepared, the ring size ranging from 12 to 36. ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectra of both free ligands and their metal-ion complexes have been recorded. For 18- and 21-membered compounds a general downfield shift was observed for both methylene and aromatic proton resonances on metal-ion complexation. The stoichiometry of K⁺ and Na⁺ complexes was deduced from chemical shift dependence on metal-ion concentration. The K⁺ and Na⁺ complexes of 18- and 21-membered rings have a guest to host ratio of 1:1, whereas the K⁺ salt of the 15-membered ring exists as a 1:2 complex in solution. The ¹H shift observed on salt formation was attributed to electric-field and conformational effects. The ¹³C resonances for the aryl carbons, C-1, C-2 and C-3, and the α-methylene carbon in 15- and 18-membered rings were shifted upfield when an equivalent amount of KSCN was added in CDCI_3?DMSO-d₆. The shift changes were independent of the anion, and similar results were obtained for SCN^?, Br^?, and I^? salts. The upfield shift is explained by conformational factors. The spectral changes were slight for 12- and 36-membered rings. In 15- and 18-membered rings, complexation induces conformational changes which force the C-α carbon into the plane of the benzene ring. The solution conformation of these molecules is discussed.     

The geometrical structure of the parameter space of the two-dimensional normal distribution

The differential geometrical consideration of the parameter space, especially as a Riemannian geometry, was initiated by C.R. Rao in 1945. This approach appears to be important for the problem of estimation and test of hypotheses as well as for applications to physical problems. It has been shown that the parameter spaces of univariate normal distribution, univariate exponential distribution and multinomial distribution are Riemannian spaces of constant curvature. In the present paper the discussion is confined to the parameter space of the two-dimensional normal distribution. It has been shown that in general the parameter space is not necessarily of a constant curvature and that, if the correlation coefficient vanishes, the parameter space becomes an Einstein space. In addition, some invariant quantities, as sectional curvature, mean curvature and scalar curvature, have been calculated.     

Thermal expansion of InBi

Linear thermal expansion of InBi single crystal has been measured between ?186 and 100°C. Lattice constant a shows a normal behaviour over the measured temperature range. Lattice constant c, however, contracts monotonically with increasing temperature in this range.     

CHLORPROMAZINE PHOTOSENSITIZATION–II. FAILURE TO DETECT ANY EVIDENCE FOR INVOLVEMENT OF DNA DAMAGE IN THE PHOTODYNAMIC KILLING OF ESCHERICHIA COLI IN THE PRESENCE OF CHLORPROMAZINE

Abstract— When a suspension of Escherichia coli was irradiated with near-UV light in the presence of chlorpromazine (at a concentration below a cytotoxic level), the cells were killed. Efficiency of the photodynamic killing was not influenced by the deficiency of the uvrA gene or the recA gene. Neither phenotypic reversion of E. coli Hs30R (arginine auxotroph) nor induction of lambda prophage in lysogenic bacteria was detected after this treatment.
