The cyano nitronyl nitroxide radical: experimental and theoretical evidence for the fourth case of the McConnell-I mechanism

The nitronyl nitroxide 2-cyano-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (1) crystallises in the tetragonal P42(1)m space group with a=7.4050(7), c=8.649(1) A. In the crystal the molecules form layers parallel to the ab plane in which they are orthogonal to each other. In the layers there are close contacts, 2.953(2) A, between the NO groups and the bridging carbon atoms of the O-N-C-N-O fragment of neighbouring radicals. The calculated spin density shows a positive population mainly and equally localised on the NO groups and small but significant negative spin densities on the bridging carbon atom and the cyano nitrogen. Absorption spectra show temperature-dependent transitions related to the magnetic behaviour. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in the range 2-300 K reveals that couplings between the radicals are antiferromagnetic, and is interpreted by considering a two-dimensional square array of spin S=1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled (J=-10 cm(-1) and g=2.01). This is interpreted as an exchange coupling through close contact between positive and negative spin densities in orthogonal orbitals on oxygen and carbon atoms, respectively.     

The Revival of Enantioselective Perfluoroalkylation – Update of New Synthetic Approaches from 2015–2022

Over the last years, methods devoted to the synthesis of asymmetric molecules bearing a perfluoroalkylated chain have been limited in number. Among them, only a few can be used on a large variety of scaffolds. This microreview aims at summarizing these recent advances in enantioselective perfluoroalkylation (−CF₃, −CF₂H, −C_nF_2n+1) and highlights the need for new enantioselective methods to easily synthesize chiral fluorinated molecules which would be useful for the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. Some perspectives are also mentioned.     

Identification,synthesis and conformational study of a CN(R,S) synthon by-product: (5R, 10R)-5,10-diphenyl-1,6-diaza-3,8-dioxabicyclo[4.4.1]undecane

The title compound, containing a new heterocyclic skeleton, was identified by X-ray crystallography as the product of condensation of (R)-phenylglycinol with an excess of formaldehyde. The molecule adopts a rigid double twist-chair conformation in both solid and solution states.

Total Synthesis of Callyspongiolide,Part 2: The Ynoate Metathesis/cis-Reduction Strategy

The macrocyclic core of the cytotoxic marine natural product callyspongiolide ( 1 ) was forged by ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM) of an ynoate precursor using a molybdenum alkylidyne complex endowed with triarylsilanolate ligands as the catalyst. This result is remarkable in view of the failed attempts documented in the literature at converting electron deficient alkynes with the aid of more classical catalysts. The subsequent Z-selective semi-reduction of the resulting cycloalkyne by hydrogenation over nickel boride required careful optimization in order to minimize overreduction and competing dehalogenation of the compound's alkenyl iodide terminus as needed for final attachment of the side chain of 1 by Sonogashira coupling. The required cyclization precursor itself was prepared via Kocienski olefination.     

N-3 alkylation of uracils with unprotected amino alcohols using the Mitsunobu reaction

During our search for novel CGRP antagonists, we had great difficulty in accessing one of our key motifs. Herein, we communicate how we solved the problem by an unprecedented Mitsunobu alkylation using unprotected amino alcohols.     

Cyclotriphosphazene,a scaffold for 19F MRI contrast agents

A cyclotriphosphazene substituted with six 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) benzyloxy units was designed as a novel ¹⁹F MRI contrast agent. The resulting molecule has 36 magnetically equivalent fluorine atoms and exhibited suitable MRI properties with high imaging sensitivity, confirming the proof-of-concept as a convenient scaffold for the production of new ¹⁹F MRI contrasts agents.     

Immobilization of η-cyclopentadienyltris(dimethylamido)zirconium polymerization catalysts on a chlorosilane- and HMDS-modified mesoporous silica surface: a new concept for supporting metallocene amides towards heterogeneous single-site-catalysts

The modification of a mesoporous silica surface with Si(Ind)(CH₃)₂Cl and the immobilization of CpZr(NMe₂)₃ on this surface was studied via IR-spectroscopy. To reduce side reactions, the indenyl-modified silica was reacted with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) under IR-control before the CpZr(NMe₂)₃-immobilization. The role of the hydroxyl group protection with HMDS is discussed. The surface modifications have been repeated via Schlenk technique at the same conditions and the surface modifications were studied with ¹³C CP MAS–NMR, ¹H MAS–NMR, elemental-, SEM- and BET-analysis. The surface species of the resulting catalysts are discussed. The precatalysts have been treated with methylaluminoxane (MAO) (Al:Zr (mol:mol)=500:1) and the resulting Zr contents (leaching-effect) are discussed. All catalysts have been tested in ethylene and propylene polymerization.

Due to climatic change, many Alpine glaciers have significantly retreated during the last century. In this study we perform the numerical simulation of the temporal and spatial change of Rhonegletscher, Swiss Alps, from 1874 to 2007, and from 2007 to 2100.
