How to make sense of the common prior assumption under incomplete information

Recent contributions have questioned the meaningfulness of the Common Prior Assumption (CPA) in situations of incomplete information. We characterize the CPA in terms of the primitives (individuals' belief hierarchies) without reference to an ex ante stage. The key is to rule out “agreeing to disagree” about any aspect of beliefs. Our results also yield a generalization of single-person Bayesian updating to situations without perfect recall. The entire analysis is carried out locally at the “true state”, using beliefs only, rather than beliefs-plus-knowledge. We discuss the role of truth assumptions on beliefs for a satisfactory notion of the CPA, and point out an important conceptual discontinuity between the case of two and many individuals.     

Volume requirements of 3D upward drawings

This paper studies the problem of drawing directed acyclic graphs in three dimensions in the straight-line grid model so that all directed edges are oriented in a common (upward) direction. We show that there exists a family of outerplanar directed acyclic graphs whose volume requirement is super-linear. We also prove that for the case of directed trees a linear-volume upper bound is achievable.

An easy synthetic approach to 1,2,3-triazole-fused heterocycles

A convenient synthesis of 1,2,3-triazole-fused isoindolines and dihydroisoquinolines in good to excellent yield is reported, starting from easily available terminal alkynes and (2-haloaryl)alkylazides. The method is based upon a cycloaddition reaction, via click chemistry, followed by a transition metal-catalyzed functionalization of a C-H bond.     

Capillary electrophoresis of nicotinamide—adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide—adenine dinucleotide phosphate derivatives in coated tubular columns

HPCE was shown to be an effective and convenient method for the determination of nicotinamide—adenine dinucleotide (oxidized, NAD⁺; reduced, NADH), nicotinamide—adenine dinucleotide phosphate (oxidized, NADP; reduced, NADPH) and their synthetic derivatives. The coenzymes were easily separated among themselves and from their degradation products, which are inhibitors of dehydrogenases, in 15 min in a coated capillary. Several coenzyme derivatives such as N⁶-(2-aminoethyl)-NAD(P)⁺ and N(1)-(2-aminoethyl)-NAD(P)⁺ were separated by zone electrophoresis in uncoated or coated capillaries using 50 mM 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulphonic acid (pH 7.0) or Tris—HCl (pH 8.0) as buffer systems. Capillary zone electrophoresis and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography can also be used to monitor continuously coenzyme chemical modifications.     

On the modelling of dissipative solids

Summary The estimate of material parameters, related to models of dissipative solids, is investigated. In particular, upon regarding the solid as viscoelastic, it is shown how the stress functional can be determined by having recourse to experimental curves which account for creep tests.

Thermodynamics of aqueous solutions of boric acid

Vapor pressures of aqueous solutions of boric acid over a wide range of acid concentrations were measured from 40 to 100°C. The results, together with solubility data taken from the literature, can be described with a thermodynamic model which uses the Wilson equations to express the activity coefficients of water and boric acid. Only three temperature independent adjustable parameters are required; one of these represents the entropy of fusion of boric acid, data which are not available in the literature.
