Cochran's statistical theorem for outer inverses of matrices and matrix quadratic forms

We extend the matrix version of Cochran's statistical theorem to outer inverses of a matrix. As applications, we investigate the Wishartness and independence of matrix quadratic forms for Kronecker product covariance structures.     

Thermal behavior of metallodendrimers possessing bis(terpyridinyl)Ru(II) connectivity and different surface functionality

A series of metallodendrimers, assembled by means of bis(terpyridinyl)Ru^(II) connectivity on poly(propylene imine) dendrimer scaffolds, with homogeneous or heterogeneous surfaces, were prepared. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to determine their thermal behavior, glass‐transition temperatures, and the decomposition kinetics and temperatures; no synergy effects for these properties were observed for the heterogeneously surfaced constructs in contrast to the corresponding homogeneously coated materials, which exhibited different values depending on their surface functionalities. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry study of the crystallization of poly(ethylene naphthalate), poly(butylene naphthalate), and their copolymers

The crystallization behavior of a series of poly(ethylene‐co‐butylene naphthalate) (PEBN) random copolymers was studied. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns showed that the crystallization of these copolymers could occur over the entire range of compositions. This resulted in the formation of poly(ethylene naphthalate) or poly(butylene naphthalate) crystals, depending on the composition of the copolymers. Sharp diffraction peaks were observed, except for 50/50 PEBN. Eutectic behavior was also observed. This showed isodimorphic cocrystallization of the PEBN copolymers. The variation of the enthalpy of fusion of the copolymers with the composition was estimated. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics were studied. The crystallization rates were found to decrease as the comonomer unit content increased. The tensile properties were also measured and were found to decrease as the butylene naphthalate content of the copolymers increased. For initially amorphous specimens, orientation was proved by WAXD patterns after drawing, but no crystalline reflections were observed. However, the fast crystallization of drawn specimens occurred when they were heated above the glass‐transition temperature. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single-molecule single crystals

Various approaches to the preparation and verification of single-molecule single crystals are discussed for polyethylene and poly (oxyethylene). Analytic tools are electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. The main difficulty in producing a single-molecule single crystal is to keep crystals from joining during growth.     

Ramsey numbers for graphs with five vertices

The Ramsey numbers r(F¹, F²) are tabulated for essentially all but six pairs of graphs F¹ and F² with five vertices.     

Deuterium exchange of 4-pyrimidones and 4-pyrimidthiones

The hydrogen-deuterium exchange of H-2 in 4-pyrimidone, a number of 1- and 3-alkyl-4-pyrimidones and several of their thione analogs in deuterium oxide at moderate temperatures is reported. This reaction is apparently not susceptible to acid or base catalysis. Cations of the 4-pyrimidones were found not to exchange H-2 at all in acid media. Catalytic amounts of bases do not alter the exchange rates whereas more concentrated alkali decompose the pyrimidone. However, 1,4(3,4)-dihydro-1,3-dimethyl-4-oxopyrimidinium iodide (and its 6-methyl analog) exchange H-2 quite rapidly in neutral deuterium oxide, almost instantly when triethylamine is added as a catalyst, and very slowly in dilute solutions of deuterium chloride in deuterium oxide. Mechanisms are proposed to account for these phenomena.     

Photochemical and thermal transformations of azomethine imines

The thermal and photochemical fragmentations of a few bisazoalkenes have been investigated. 2-Phenyl-4,5-disubstituted-1, 2,3-triazoles were obtained both in the thermolysis and photolysis of 1, 2-bisphenylazo-(4, 4′-dichloro) stilbene, 1, 2-bisphenylazo(4, 4′-dimethoxy)stilbene, 1, 2-bisphenylazocyclohexene and o-(phenylazo) phenyldiazocyanide. Both 2, 3-bisphenylazo-2-butene and 1, 2-bisphenylazoethylene failed to undergo either photolysis or thermolysis in the expected manner. However, 2, 3-bisphenylazo-2-butene underwent an acid-catalysed valence isomerisation to anhydro 1-phenylimino-2-phenyl-4, 5-dimethyl-1, 2, 3-trizolium hydroxide, which on photolysis gave 2-phenyl-4, 5-dimethyl-1, 2, 3-triazole. The same iminotriazolium intermediate gave a cycloadduct, 2, 6-diphenyl-3, 3a-dimethyl-4, 5-dicarbomethoxypyrazolino [2.3.c][1.2.3] triazole, on treatment with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, whereas treatment with carbon disulphide gave 2-phenyl-4, 5-dimethyl-1, 2, 3-triazole. Both photolysis and thermolysis of C-biphenylene-N^α(4-chlorophenyl)-N^β-cyanoazomethine imine gave 9-fluorenone-N- (4-chlorophenyl) anil. Photolysis of 1, 2-bisphenylazoacenaphthylene in methanol gave acenaphthenequinone monophenylhydrazone.
