Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Activated Carbon–Filled Epoxy Nanocomposites

Nano-activated carbons obtained from oil palm empty fiber bunch (AC-EFB), bamboo stem (AC-BS), and coconut shells (AC-CNS) were reinforced in epoxy matrix to fabricate epoxy nanocomposites. The dynamic mechanical analysis of epoxy nanocomposites was carried out, and 5% AC-CNS treated with KOH-filled epoxy composites displayed the highest storage modulus of all the activated carbon–filled epoxy composites. The incorporation of a small amount of AC-BS, AC-EFB, and AC-CNS to the epoxy matrix enhanced the damping characteristics of the epoxy nanocomposites. The 5% AC-EFB treated with H₃PO₄ filled epoxy composites showed the highest glass transition temperature (T_g) in all temperature ranges.     

Synthesis of Some New 1,2,3,4‐Tetrahydropyrimidine‐2‐thione and Their Thiazolo[3,2‐a]pyrimidine,Thiazino and Benzothiazepine Derivatives

The starting N‐(2‐pyridyl)‐6‐methyl‐4‐phenyl‐2‐thioxo‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydropyrimidine‐5‐carboxamide ( 4 ) was used as a key intermediate for the synthesis of new 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydropyrimidine‐2‐thione and their thiazolo[3,2‐a]pyrimidine, thiazino and benzothiazipen derivatives. The reaction of 4 with haloketones in ethanol catalyzed by base afforded the corresponding thiophenopyrimidine and pyrimidothiazipine derivatives 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 . Methylation and formylation of 4 led to the pyrimidine derivatives 15 and 16 , respectively. The preventative compounds were established on the basis of elemental and spectral data.     

Novel Uncatalyzed Hydrocyanation of Ketones utlizing Tetrachlorosilane–Potassium Cyanide Reagent

A combination of tetrachlorosilane and potassium cyanide (in situ trichlorosilyl cyanide) was found to work efficiently for hydrocyanation of ketones to afford the corresponding cyanohydrins in high yield under mild conditions.     

Removal of Cyanide from Aqueous Solutions by Adsorption on Activated Carbon Prepared from Lignocellulosic By-products

Cyanide is considered one of the most dangerous compounds for the environment. They are discharged by various industries: chemical and metallurgical processes (extraction of gold and silver) and food industries. Adsorption is among the most used processes for elimination of cyanides particularly for the low concentrations. In this work, the cyanide removal is carried out by adsorption onto activated carbons prepared from olive stones and coffee ground. So we can promote this by-product as an inexpensive adsorbent. The prepared activated carbons are characterized by scanning electron micrograph and by determination of the physicochemical properties and specific surface area. All the adsorption experiments were performed in batch mode on synthetic water cyanide (KCN) at pH 10.8–11.0 to avoid volatilization of very toxic HCN. To describe the adsorption kinetics, the kinetic models of pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion were applied. The experimental equilibrium data for adsorption of free cyanide were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models.     

Spectrophotometric Studies of Entrapped Thymol Phtalein pH Indicator into Sol‐Gel Matrix

This research involves the behavior of thymol phtalein pH indicator entrapped into the sol‐gel derived inorganic matrix. The method is based on the physical entrapment of the reagent molecules in the sol‐gel matrix. The immobilized thymol phthalein pH indicator shows behavior similar to its solution counterpart. The UV/vis spectra indicate that the thymol phthalein retains its structure during the sol‐gel reactions in terms of response to pH. Thymol phthalein can be regarded as uniformly distributed in the sol‐gel matrix. This observation has been confirmed using polarized microscopy. This research shows that thymol phtalein can be immobilized in sol‐gel glasses and used as a solid pH sensor.     

Entrapment of pH Universal Indicator into Sol‐Gel Matrix

This study involves the behavior of universal indicator entrapped into the sol‐gel matrix. The encapsulation of universal indicator has been prepared by acid catalyzed sol‐gel reaction of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of universal indicator to produce transparent monolithic silica doping with universal indicator. The immobilized universal indicator pH‐indicator shows behavior similar to its solution counterpart. The UV/VIS spectra indicate that the universal indicator retains its structure during the sol‐gel reactions in terms of response to pH. The universal indicator can be regarded as uniformly distributed in the sol‐gel matrix. The use of SDS surfactant has positive effects on the immobilized universal indicator monolithic disk due to homogenizing the polymerizing system. This observation has been confirmed using polarized microscopy.     

An improved capillary electrophoresis method for in vitro monitoring of the challenging early steps of Aβ1–42 peptide oligomerization: Application to anti‐Alzheimer's drug discovery

We report an improved CE method to monitor in vitro the self‐assembly of monomeric amyloid β‐peptide (42 amino acids amyloid β‐peptide, Aβ_1–42) and in particular the crucial early steps involved in the formation of the neurotoxic oligomers. In order to start the kinetics from the beginning, sample preparation was optimized to provide samples containing exclusively the monomeric form. The CE method was also improved using a dynamic coating and by reducing the separation distance. Using this method, the disappearance of the monomer as well as the progressive formation of four species during the self‐assembly process can now be monitored and quantified over time. The hydrodynamic radius of the species present at the initial kinetics step was estimated around 1.8 nm by Taylor dispersion analysis while SDS‐PAGE analyses showed the predominance of the monomer. These results confirmed that the Aβ_1–42 species present at this initial time was the monomer. Methylene blue, an anti‐Alzheimer disease candidate, was then evaluated. In spite of an oligomerization inhibition, the enhanced disappearance of the Aβ_1–42 monomer provoked by methylene blue was demonstrated for the first time. This method, allowing the monomeric and smallest oligomeric species to be monitored, represents a new accurate and precise way to evaluate compounds for drug discovery.     

Electrospun copper oxide nanoparticles as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for N-arylation of indole

The N-arylation of indoles with a variety of aryl bromides is reported using copper oxide nanoparticles as a heterogeneous catalyst. These copper oxide nanoparticles, which were produced in a novel, facile, and scalable fashion via an electrospinning technique, resulted in an excellent product yield under mild conditions. Moreover, the catalyst was easily recovered and reused several times without significant loss of activity.     

1, 3-dipolar cycloaddition of C-phenyl carbamoyl-N-phenyl nitrone with some dialkyl-substituted 2-benzylidenecyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylates: theoretical analysis of mechanism and regioselectivity

The regiochemistry of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of C-phenyl carbamoyl-N-phenyl nitrone with some dialkyl-substituted 2-benzylidenecyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylates as dipolarophile was investigated using density functional theory-based reactivity indexes and activation energy calculations at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Analysis of the geometries and bond orders at the TS structures associated with the different reaction pathways shows that these 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions occur via an asynchronous concerted mechanism. Analysis of the local electrophilicity and nucleophilicity indexes based on Parr functions only for reaction between 1 + 2a and based on Fukui functions only for 1 + 2b gives correct regioselectivity. The theoretical results obtained in the work clearly predict the regiochemistry of the isolated cycloadducts and agree to experimental results.
