The quantum theory of angular momentum affords a treatment of tensors and vectors in a spherical basis. By using this theory we define the tensor differential operators: divergence, curl and gradient which act on a tensor of any rank, in terms of C-G coefficients. With these definitions we obtain a matrix representation and useful properties for those operators. An interesting application of this formalism is to find the wave equation of a tensor of any rank in a linear theory. This provides a new common way to look at the wave equations associated with both Maxwell's equations and the Maxwell-like equations for the linearized Weyl curvature tensor in gravitoelectromagnetism describing gravitational radiation on a Minkowski spacetime background.  相似文献

The pro-oxidant compound okadaic acid (OKA) mimics alterations found in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as oxidative stress and tau hyperphosphorylation, leading to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. Although loss of dendrite complexity occurs in AD, the study of this post-synaptic domain in chemical-induced models remains unexplored. Moreover, there is a growing expectation for therapeutic adjuvants to counteract these brain dysfunctions. Melatonin, a free-radical scavenger, inhibits tau hyperphosphorylation, modulates phosphatases, and strengthens dendritic arbors. Thus, we determined if OKA alters the dendritic arbors of hilar hippocampal neurons and whether melatonin prevents, counteracts, or reverses these damages. Rat organotypic cultures were incubated with vehicle, OKA, melatonin, and combined treatments with melatonin either before, simultaneously, or after OKA. DNA breaks were assessed by TUNEL assay and nuclei were counterstained with DAPI. Additionally, MAP2 was immunostained to assess the dendritic arbor properties by the Sholl method. In hippocampal hilus, OKA increased DNA fragmentation and reduced the number of MAP2(+) cells, whereas melatonin protected against oxidation and apoptosis. Additionally, OKA decreased the dendritic arbor complexity and melatonin not only counteracted, but also prevented and reversed the dendritic arbor retraction, highlighting its role in post-synaptic domain integrity preservation against neurodegenerative events in hippocampal neurons.  相似文献

An electrochemical method for discriminating healthy and malignant tissues in prostate biopsies using the voltammetry of immobilized particles methodology is described. The method involves the sampling with graphite bars 0.5 mm in diameter on paraffin-impregnated cross sections of prostate tissues used in ordinary cytological evaluation after local staining with methylene blue (MB). The subsequent record of the voltammetric response of sample-modified graphite electrodes displays clearly different MB-centered features for healthy and malignant regions due to the different association of the dye to the respective cells.

We describe a deterministic algorithm for computing the diameter of a finite set of points in R 3 , that is, the maximum distance between any pair of points in the set. The algorithm runs in optimal time O(nlog n) for a set of n points. The first optimal, but randomized, algorithm for this problem was proposed more than 10 years ago by Clarkson and Shor [11] in their ground-breaking paper on geometric applications of random sampling. Our algorithm is relatively simple except for a procedure by Matoušek [25] for the efficient deterministic construction of epsilon-nets. This work improves previous deterministic algorithms by Ramos [31] and Bespamyatnikh [7], both with running time O(nlog 2 n) . The diameter algorithm appears to be the last one in Clarkson and Shor's paper that up to now had no deterministic counterpart with a matching running time. Heat and mass transfer phenomena in annular liquid jets are analyzed at high Reynolds numbers by means of a model derived from the governing equations that takes into account the effects of surface tension and boundary conditions at the gas–liquid interfaces and the large differences between the thermal and mass diffusivities, densities, dynamic viscosities, and thermal conductivities between gases and liquids. The model clearly illustrates the stiffness in both space and time associated with the concentration, linear momentum and energy boundary layers, and the initial cooling of the gases enclosed by the jet when, starting from a steady state where gases are injected into the volume enclosed by the jet at a rate equal to the heat and mass absorption rates by the liquid, gas injection is stopped. It is shown that, owing to the non-linear integrodifferential coupling between the fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer processes, the pressure of the gases enclosed by the jet may vary in either a monotonic or an oscillatory manner depending on the large number of non-dimensional parameters that govern the heat and mass transfer phenomena. For the underpressurized jets considered here, it is shown that thermal equilibrium is achieved at a much faster rate than that associated with mass transfer, double diffusive phenomena in the liquid may occur, and the mass and volume of the gases enclosed by the jet may increase or decrease as functions of time until a steady equilibrium condition is reached.  相似文献

We propose an algorithm to construct recurrence relations for the coefficients of the Fourier series expansions with respect to the q-classical orthogonal polynomials pk(x;q). Examples dealing with inversion problems, connection between any two sequences of q-classical polynomials, linearization of ϑm(x) pn(x;q), where ϑm(x) is xmor (x;q)m, and the expansion of the Hahn-Exton q-Bessel function in the little q-Jacobi polynomials are discussed in detail. We study flip graphs of triangulations whose maximum vertex degree is bounded by a constant k. In particular, we consider triangulations of sets of n points in convex position in the plane and prove that their flip graph is connected if and only if k > 6; the diameter of the flip graph is O(n 2). We also show that, for general point sets, flip graphs of pointed pseudo-triangulations can be disconnected for k ≤ 9, and flip graphs of triangulations can be disconnected for any k. Additionally, we consider a relaxed version of the original problem. We allow the violation of the degree bound k by a small constant. Any two triangulations with maximum degree at most k of a convex point set are connected in the flip graph by a path of length O(n log n), where every intermediate triangulation has maximum degree at most k + 4.  相似文献
