An effective stochastic excitation strategy for finding elusive NMR signals from solids

The versatility of using a stochastic pulse sequence to elucidate peaks with a wide range of shifts, peak widths, and T(1) relaxation times is demonstrated. A stochastic sequence is combined with high speed magic angle spinning (MAS) to obtain the broad and largely shifted peak associated with (31)P in LiNiPO(4). A stochastic sequence is also used to obtain a spectrum of 85% H(3)PO(4), which has a much longer T(1) value. The signal-to-noise was comparable for spectra of 85% H(3)PO(4) obtained with either a stochastic sequence or an optimized Ernst angle experiment. Experimental parameters for the stochastic experiment are set depending only on the ringdown of the probe and not on any inherent qualities of the sample. A stochastic sequence, therefore, combined with MAS provides a useful strategy for finding peaks with unknown T(1) relaxation constants, peak widths, and shifts.     

Selective uncoupling of individual mitochondria within a cell using a mitochondria-targeted photoactivated protonophore

Depolarization of an individual mitochondrion or small clusters of mitochondria within cells has been achieved using a photoactivatable probe. The probe is targeted to the matrix of the mitochondrion by an alkyltriphenylphosphonium lipophilic cation and releases the protonophore 2,4-dinitrophenol locally in predetermined regions in response to directed irradiation with UV light via a local photolysis system. This also provides a proof of principle for the general temporally and spatially controlled release of bioactive molecules, pharmacophores, or toxins to mitochondria with tissue, cell, or mitochondrion specificity.     

Aerosol retrievals from channel-1 and -2 AVHRR radiances: Long-term trends updated and revisited

The nominal Global Aerosol Climatology Project (GACP) record of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and Ångström exponent (AE) over the oceans is extended by 6 months to cover the period from August 1981 through December 2005. The most recent 4-year segment reveals no significant short-term tendencies in globally and hemispherically averaged AOTs and AEs. This finding is consistent with contemporaneous MODIS and MISR results and the accumulating evidence of a gradual transition from global brightening to global dimming. We also analyze the retrieval implications of allowing the imaginary part of the aerosols refractive index Im(m) to change over the duration of the GACP record. Our sensitivity study shows that increasing Im(m) from 0.003 during the 4-year pre-Pinatubo period up to 0.007 during the most recent 4-year segment of GACP data eliminates the previously identified long-term decreasing AOT trend. Should this long-term trend in Im(m) be real then it would cause the global absorption AOT over the oceans to more than double and the global single-scattering albedo to decrease from ～0.95 to ～0.88. Such changes could make tropospheric aerosols significant contributors to the recent surface temperature increase.     

Longevity risk and the Grim Reaper’s toxic tail: The survivor fan charts

This paper uses survivor fan charts to illustrate the prospective density functions of future male survival rates. The fan charts are based on a version of the Cairns–Blake–Dowd model of male mortality that provides a good fit to recent mortality data for England and Wales. They indicate that although none of us can escape the Grim Reaper, survivorship uncertainty is greatest for males aged a little over 90, confirming that there exists a ‘toxic tail’ for those institutions, such as annuity and pension providers, which are obliged to make payments to them for as long as they live. We also find that taking account of uncertainty in the parameters of the underlying mortality model leads to major increases in estimates of the widths of the fan charts.     

Contrasting chemical and physical properties of [o- and [p-(N,N-dimethylamino) phenyl]phosphines and phosphonium salts

The rate of alkylation of (2-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)diphenylphosphine with benzyl bromide in chloroform is faster than that of the corresponding reaction of (4-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)diphenylphosphine. This result is discussed in terms of a through-space N_2p–P(IV) interaction for the former. The rate of alkaline cleavage of benzyl(4-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)diphenylphosphonium bromide, which gives toluene, is slower than the rate of alkaline cleavage of benzyl(2-N,N-dimethylaminophenyl)diphenylphosphonium bromide, which gives dimethylaniline. This result is also discussed in terms of the through-space N_2p–P(IV) interaction. The ³¹P NMR spectra of a series of ortho-dimethylamino-substituted triarylphosphines and benzyltriarylphosphonium halides show that the phosphorus atom is more shielded than in the corresponding para-dimethylamino compounds, as anticipated on the basis of an N_2p–P(IV) interaction for the former.     

Iron-catalyzed Doyle-Kirmse reaction of allyl sulfides with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane

[formula: see text] Iron salts efficiently catalyze the Doyle-Kirmse reaction of allyl sulfides with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane and ethyl diazoacetate in dichloroethane at 83 degrees C. Competitive dimerization is less of a problem with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane than with ethyl diazoacetate. Good results are obtained using only 1.5 equiv of (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane, even without slow addition. Phosphine ligands affect the kinetics, but not the diastereoselectivity. Dppe and BINAP lead to higher yields than dppp, but no enantioselection was detected with R-(+)-BINAP.
