High energy asymptotics of the scattering amplitude for the Schrödinger equation

We find an explicit function approximating at high energies the kernel of the scattering matrix with arbitrary accuracy. Moreover, the same function gives all diagonal singularities of the kernel of the scattering matrix in the angular variables. Soliton interaction under the influence of higher-order effects

In this paper, we present exact N-soliton solution by employing simple, straightforward Darboux transformation based on the Lax pair for Hirota equation, a higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger (HNLS) equation. As examples, one- and two-soliton solutions in explicit forms are given and their properties are also analyzed. A bound solution without interaction will be theoretically predicted if one can adjust frequency shift for each soliton appropriately. Further, we obtain the approximate eigenvalues by employing two-soliton solution and discuss analytically the interaction between neighboring solitons under the influence of the higher-order effects. It is shown that the combined effects of the higher-order effects can restrain the interaction between neighboring solitons to some extent. The results are proved by directly solving HNLS equation numerically.     

Modified Three-Dimensional Formulations of Bending Problems of Homogeneous Plates and Beams under Complex Fixing Conditions

Modified three-dimensional formulations of bending problems of homogeneous elastic plates and beams are considered. Modification of the known three-dimensional formulations reduces to using additional constraints imposed on displacement functions. An advantage of the formulations proposed is that complex fixing conditions of plates and beams can be taken into account.     

Dynamic holograms and optical limiting: Asymmetric two-wave interactions

The conditions for obtaining a high efficiency of energy exchange upon two-wave interactions in dynamic holograms are found by analysis and numerical simulation of a system of nonlinear equations. Use of an asymmetric scheme of beam interaction in a medium with two nonlinearities, one of which determines the amplitude and relaxation time of a grating and the other of which provides phase modulation of the interacting beams, is proposed. It is shown that such a scheme in combination with the specific properties of a medium makes it possible to radically reduce the requirements for the nonlinearity of a medium and the intensity of a light flux in limiting systems, as well as to significantly decrease the time of the transition process. As a result, it becomes possible to attain an efficiency of energy transfer higher than 90% and to increase the corresponding attenuation of a high-power beam by almost two orders of magnitude, which is of interest for optical limiting of intense light fluxes.     

A solvent-free synthesis of coumarins using a Wells-Dawson heteropolyacid as catalyst

Substituted coumarins are synthesized from phenols and β-ketoesters by the Pechmann reaction, using a Wells-Dawson heteropolyacid (H₆P₂W₁₈O₆₂·24H₂O) as catalyst by a solvent-free procedure. This one requires low reaction times, 130 °C temperature and as little as 1 mol % of Wells-Dawson acid, obtaining good to excellent yields of coumarins. The catalyst showed to be reusable with no differences in the yields. The results are compared with those of the reactions performed in toluene solution. The presented synthetic procedure is a convenient, clean and fast alternative for synthesizing 4-substituted coumarins (17 examples).     

Higher Order Peak Algebras

Using the theory of noncommutative symmetric functions, we introduce the higher order peak algebras (Sym(N))_N≥1, a sequence of graded Hopf algebras which contain the descent algebra and the usual peak algebra as initial cases (N=1 and N=2). We compute their Hilbert series, introduce and study several combinatorial bases, and establish various algebraic identities related to the multisection of formal power series with noncommutative coefficients. Determination of melengestrol acetate in bovine tissues by automated coupled-column normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography

A method has been developed for the determination of melengestrol acetate in bovine tissues at lower levels than previously reported. Liquid-liquid extraction of tissue homogenates provided crude clean-up while final isolation, screening, and quantification was done on-line with an automated, normal-phase, coupled-column high-performance liquid chromatographic system. The chromatographic system included phenyl and silica analytical columns for the purposes of isolation and final separation, respectively. These columns provided a large difference in selectivity when operated under normal-phase conditions which allowed for the efficient isolation of melengestrol acetate from the complex tissue extracts. Mobile phases were composed of hexane and dichloromethane modified with methanol and water. Transfer and enrichment of the analyte from the primary phenyl column to the silica column was via a short (12 mm x 4 mm I.D.) silica column. Regeneration and equilibration of the phenyl column was performed after the injection of each tissue extract and was accomplished simultaneously while analytical separation occurred on the final silica column. Routing of the mobile phases and regeneration solvent was performed with automated switching valves. The total time required for each analysis was 12 min. Quantification is demonstrated using external standards with UV detection at 287 nm. The overall recovery of the method was 86% with a coefficient of variation of 9.84% at the 10 ppb [the American billion (10(9] is used in this article] level in bovine liver extracts.     

Analysis and prediction of primary structures of proteins using a computer

On the basis of a computer analysis of four classes of toxic polypeptides, generalized primary structures of each class have been obtained which can be used for planning the synthesis of biologically active compounds.     

The effect of traffic noise on sleep of young adults in their homes

The disturbance of sleep by traffic noise is a major problem area in noise pollution. Extensive laboratory tests using multichannel electroencephalograms (EEG) have been carried out by many workers to determine the general response of people when exposed to noise during sleep. An experimental technique for obtaining results in people's homes has been developed using a simplified one-channel EEG. The responses of six people in the age range 19-24 were measured. A significant correlation was found between sleep disturbance and traffic noise when the noise is expressed in EPNdB. In the home experiments the subjects appeared to be approximately 10 dB less sensitive to noises than laboratory subjects for similar noise exposure. There also appeared to be some adaptation to the noise exposure; however, only one subject was tested for a period of 20 days and was insufficient to give definite results on adaptation.
