K-line X-ray fluorescence from highly charged iron ions under dense astrophysical plasma conditions

In the present work, we report an investigation of plasma environment effects on the atomic parameters associated with the K-vacancy states in highly charged iron ions within the astrophysical context of accretion disks around black holes. More particularly, the sensitivity of K-line X-ray fluorescence parameters (wavelengths, radiative transition probabilities, and Auger rates) in Fe XVII–Fe XXV ions has been estimated for plasma conditions characterized by an electron temperature ranging from 10⁵ to 10⁷ K and an electron density ranging from 10¹⁸ to 10²² cm⁻³. In order to do this, relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock atomic structure calculations have been carried out by considering a time averaged Debye-Hückel potential for both the electron–nucleus and electron–electron interactions.     

Effect of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents on trans-Resveratrol Photo-Chemical Induced Isomerization and 2,4,6-Trihydroxyphenanthrene Electro-Cyclic Formation

trans-Resveratrol is a natural bioactive compound with well-recognized health promoting effects. When exposed to UV light, this compound can undergo a photochemically induced trans/cis isomerization and a 6π electrochemical cyclization with the subsequent formation of 2,4,6-trihydroxyphenanthrene (THP). THP is a potentially harmful compound which can exert genotoxic effects. In this work we improved the chromatographic separation and determination of the two resveratrol isomers and of THP by using a non-commercial pentafluorophenyl stationary phase. We assessed the effect of natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) as possible photo-protective agents by evaluating cis-resveratrol isomer and THP formation under different UV-light exposure conditions with the aim of enhancing resveratrol photostability and inhibiting THP production. Our results demonstrate a marked photoprotective effect exerted by glycerol-containing NaDES, and in particular by proline/glycerol NaDES, which exerts a strong inhibitory effect on the photochemical isomerization of resveratrol and significantly limits the formation of the toxic derivative THP. Considering the presence of resveratrol in various commercial products, these results are of note in view of the potential genotoxic risk associated with its photochemical degradation products and in view of the need for the development of green, eco-sustainable and biocompatible resveratrol photo-stable formulations.     

Noether symmetry approach in matter-dominated cosmology with variable G and Λ

In the framework of renormalization-group improved cosmologies, we use the Noether symmetry approach to get exact and general integration of the matter-dominated cosmological equations. This is performed by using an expression of Λ = Λ (G) determined by the method itself. We also work out a comparison between such a model and the concordance ΛCDM model as to the magnitude–redshift relationship, hence showing that no appreciable differences occur.     

Use of apodization in quantitative spectroscopy

Apodization, which is a tool frequently used for cosmetic representation and efficient modeling of a spectrum, is now also adopted in techniques for the quantitative retrieval of parameters from observed spectra. Whether apodization can help in quantitative spectroscopy is the subject of debate in the literature. We find that, when the considered spectral range is wide enough to accurately model the instrument line shape, the same results can be obtained with and without apodization of the spectrum. However, when a truncation error is introduced by the limited extension of the modeled spectral interval, apodization can efficiently reduce this error. Therefore it is possible to save computing time by using apodization.     

Reflection of light by a slab containing electrically small dielectric spheres

Theoriginal and theenhanced Maxwell-Garnett estimates for the permittivity of a particulate medium are applied to the reflection of light by a composite dielectric slab. The reflection coefficients for incident s and p polarizations are calculated and some curves are plotted and discussed.

Summary This paper is concerned with the Stone space X of a direct product of infinitely many Boolean algebras. In paragraph 2, after recalling that X is the Stone-ech compactification of the sum (disjoint union) of the Stone spaces of the algebras B_i, we exhibit a compactification of which is not a Stone space and we give a method to construct all the «Stone compactifications» of (the corresponding Boolean algebras are easily characterised). In paragraph 3, a set of ultrafilters of B (the «decomposable» ultrafilters) are introduced: this set properly contains , but, as is shown in paragraph 5, there are direct products that admit nondeeomposable ultrafilters (this is the case iff the set {Card B_i: i I } is not bounded by a natural number). In paragraph 4, among other things, we prove, for the set of decomposable ultrafilters, a weak form of countable compactness, in the sense that every countable clopen cover has a finite subcover; then, we deduce that the set of decomposable ultrafilters is pseudocompact, while obviously is not. Lastly, in paragraph 6, we give a second characterisation of the Stone space of B, showing that every ultrafilter of B can be obtained by iterating in a suitable way the procedure which leads to the construction of decomposable ultrafilters.

Double transverse-spin asymmetries in Drell–Yan processes with antiprotons

We present next-to-leading order predictions for double transverse-spin asymmetries in Drell–Yan dilepton production initiated by proton–antiproton scattering. The kinematic region of the proposed PAX experiment at GSI: 30?s?200 GeV²$30?s?200{\text{GeV}}^2$ and 2?M?7 GeV$2?M?7\text{GeV}$ is examined. The Drell–Yan asymmetries turn out to be large, in the range 20–40%. Measuring these asymmetries would provide the cleanest determination of the quark transversity distributions.     

Asymptotic results for weighted means of linear combinations of independent Poisson random variables

ABSTRACT

In this paper we prove the large deviation principle for a class of weighted means of linear combinations of independent Poisson distributed random variables, which converge weakly to a normal distribution. The interest in these linear combinations is motivated by the diffusion approximation in Lansky [On approximations of Stein's neuronal model, J. Theoret. Biol. 107 (1984), pp. 631–647] of the Stein's neuronal model (see Stein [A theoretical analysis of neuronal variability, Biophys. J. 5 (1965), pp. 173–194]). We also prove an analogue result for sequences of multivariate random variables based on the diffusion approximation in Tamborrino, Sacerdote, and Jacobsen [Weak convergence of marked point processes generated by crossings of multivariate jump processes. Applications to neural network modeling, Phys. D 288 (2014), pp. 45–52]. The weighted means studied in this paper generalize the logarithmic means. We also investigate moderate deviations.
