Limit theorems for a recursive maximum process with location-dependent periodic intensity-parameter

We investigate the recursive sequence Z _n : =  max {Z _n − 1,λ(Z _n − 1)X _n } where X _n is a sequence of iid random variables with exponential distributions and λ is a periodic positive bounded measurable function. We prove that the Césaro mean of the sequence λ(Z _n ) converges toward the essential minimum of λ. Subsequently we apply this result and obtain a limit theorem for the distributions of the sequence Z _n . The resulting limit is a Gumbel distribution.     

Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics for ELTs: constraints and limitations

We present how enlarging the size of a telescope from the current 10 meter telescope to the future 100 meter Extremely Large Telescopes increases the complexity of a classical or multiconjugate adaptive optics instrument. We point out elements or parameters of the system for which it is critical to propose new ideas as solutions and we study the effect of the increase of the diameter on the point spread function of an MCAO and a Ground Layer AO system. A Functional Non-Central Limit Theorem for Jump-Diffusions with Periodic Coefficients Driven by Stable Lévy-Noise

We prove a functional non-central limit theorem for jump-diffusions with periodic coefficients driven by stable Lévy-processes with stability index α>1. The limit process turns out to be an α-stable Lévy process with an averaged jump-measure. Unlike in the situation where the diffusion is driven by Brownian motion, there is no drift related enhancement of diffusivity.     

Asymptotic approximation of degenerate fiber integrals

We study asymptotics of fiber integrals depending on a large parameter. When the critical fiber is singular, full-asymptotic expansions are established in two different cases: local extremum and isolated real principal type singularities. The main coefficients are computed and invariantly expressed. In the most singular cases, it is shown that the leading term of the expansion is related to invariant measures on the spherical blow-up of the singularity. The results can be applied to certain degenerate oscillatory integrals which occur in spectral analysis and quantum mechanics.     

Capillary HPLC–ICP MS mapping of selenocompounds in spots obtained from the 2-D gel electrophoresis of the water-soluble protein fraction of selenized yeast

A method based on ICP collision-cell MS detection in capillary HPLC was developed to gain an insight into the purity and identity of selenium-containing proteins separated by 1-D and 2-D electrophoresis. The bands and spots obtained after the separation of water-soluble proteins in selenized yeast were digested with trypsin prior to chromatography. Selenium could be detected down to the subpicogram level. The method, assisted by information obtained by MALDI TOF MS on the 5000 Da cut-off fraction, permitted the purity of bands and spots to be estimated and the efficiency of tryptic digestion and the quantity of selenium present in individual peptides to be evaluated. Owing to the high sensitivity and the lack of matrix suppression effects, the method provided chromatograms with signal-to-noise ratios of 10–1000 in conditions where the common ES Q–TOF MS detection failed.

Electronic stopping power: Bragg's rule and Firsov's theory

It is shown that a modified version of Firsov's theory of the electronic stopping power, dE/dx, is a convenient formalism for studying departures from Bragg's Rule for composite targets. Within the procedures of this theory molecular hydrogen targets are compared with atomic hydrogen targets, and it is shown that Bragg's rule overestimates dE/dx for protons incident on molecular hydrogen by 11% at low proton velocities. A geometrical interpretation is given to the predicted chemical effects on dE/dx.

The synthesis of azadirachtin: a potent insect antifeedant

We describe in full the first synthesis of the potent insect antifeedant azadirachtin through a highly convergent approach. An O-alkylation reaction is used to unite decalin ketone and propargylic mesylate fragments, after which a Claisen rearrangement constructs the central C8-C14 bond in a stereoselective fashion. The allene which results from this sequence then enables a second critical carbon-carbon bond forming event whereby the [3.2.1] bicyclic system, present in the natural product, is generated via a 5-exo-radical cyclisation process. Finally, using knowledge gained through our early studies into the reactivity of the natural product, a series of carefully designed steps completes the synthesis of this challenging molecule.
