Distribution function and conductivity of a system of charged particles in linear response theory: The nonequilibrium statistical operator method and the kinetic equation method

Measurement of the transverse Doppler shift using a stored relativistic7Li+ ion beam

We have performed for the first time precision spectroscopy on a coasting fast⁷Li⁺ ion beam in a storage ring. The ion beam moving with 6.4% speed of light was first electron cooled and then merged with two counterpropagating laser beams acting on two different hyperfine transitions sharing a common upper level (λ-system). One laser was frequency locked to thea ₃ ¹²⁷J₂ hfs frequency component established as a secondary frequency standard at 514 nm. The second laser was tuned over theλ-resonance, which was recorded relative to¹²⁷J₂ hfs components. This experiment is sensitive to the time dilation in fast moving frames and will lead to new limits for the verification of special relatively. The present status of the experiment and perspectives in accuracy are discussed.     

The zeta function of a simplicial complex

Given a simplicial complex δ on vertices {1, …,n} and a fieldF we consider the subvariety of projective (n−1)-space overF consisting of points whose homogeneous coordinates have support in δ. We give a simple rational expression for the zeta function of this singular projective variety overF _q and show a close connection with the Betti numbers of the corresponding variety over ℂ. This connection is particularly simple in the case when Δ is Cohen-Macaulay.     

Enhanced electron–ion recombination in ion storage rings

We review recent advances in the understanding of the enhanced electron–ion recombination observed in storage ring experiments. The measured recombination rates show a strong enhancement relative to what the standard radiative recombination rates predict. A transient motional electric field is induced in the merging region of an electron and an ion beam in the electron cooler. This induced field opens an additional pathway for free-bound transitions of electrons. The formed Rydberg states can be radiatively stabilized and contribute to the measured rate. We show that this “field induced recombination” (FIR) explains the gap previously observed between measurements and the standard radiative recombination rate.     

Isobar separation at FRS-ESR – a development towards pure isomeric stored beams

One important goal of the ILIMA project at FAIR is the study of masses and decay properties of relativistic isomeric beams stored and cooled in the planned storage-ring complex. A new scheme is described, where a storage-cooler ring is used for high-resolution mass separation. Experimental results on the separation of the isobaric pair ¹⁴⁰Pr-¹⁴⁰Ce are presented. P. Reducing system of parameters and the Cohen-Macaulay property

Let R be a local ring and let (x ₁, …, x _r) be part of a system of parameters of a finitely generated R-module M, where r < dim_R M. We will show that if (y ₁, …, y _r) is part of a reducing system of parameters of M with (y ₁, …, y _r) M = (x ₁, …, x _r) M then (x ₁, …, x _r) is already reducing. Moreover, there is such a part of a reducing system of parameters of M iff for all primes P ε Supp M ∩ V _R(x ₁, …, x _r) with dim_R R/P = dim_R M − r the localization M _P of M at P is an r-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay module over R _P. Furthermore, we will show that M is a Cohen-Macaulay module iff y _d is a non zero divisor on M/(y ₁, …, y _d−1) M, where (y ₁, …, y _d) is a reducing system of parameters of M (d:= dim_R M).     

Q value related mass determinations using a Penning trap

We report here about measurements of reaction and decay Q values by precise determination of pairs of atomic masses. These were performed with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SMILETRAP. Measurements with Penning traps give reliable and accurate masses, in particular Q values, due to the fact that certain systematic errors to a great deal cancel in the mass difference between the two atoms defining the Q value. Some Q values that are of fundamental interest will be discussed here, for example, a new Q value for the ⁶Li (n,γ) ⁷Li reaction, for the β-decay of tritium, related to properties of the electron neutrino mass, and for the neutrino-less double β-decay of ⁷⁶Ge, related to the question of whether the neutrino is a Majorana particle or not. In case of the latter two we report the most accurate Q values, namely 18,589.8(12) eV for the tritium decay and 2,038.997(46) keV for the neutrino-less double β-decay of ⁷⁶Ge.     

Structural and spectroscopic studies of silylated cyclo- and bicyclosilanes

A number of cyclo-and bicyclosilanes have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and Raman spectroscopy. 1,1,4,4- and 1,1,3,3-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)octamethylcyclohexasilanes were found to exhibit unusual twist- and twisted boat-conformations. The UV absorption properties of all compounds were studied and found to show absorption maxima red shifted compared to the parent compound dodecamethylcyclohexasilane. Dedicated to Prof. Mitsuo Kira on the occasion of his reception of the Wacker Silicon Award 2005 and in recongnition of his numerous outstanding achievements in organosilicon chemistry.
