Squig intervals are a class of hierarchically constructed fractals introduced by the author. They can be visualized as the final outcome upon a straight interval of a suitable cascade of local perturbative eddies ruled by two processes called decimation and separation. Their theory is summarized and their scope is extended in several new directions, especially by introducing new forms of separation. Squig intervals are generalized in two dimensions, with fractal dimensions ranging from 1.2886 to 1.589. Squig sheets are constructed in three dimensional space with fractal dimensions ranging from 8/3 up. They should prove useful in modeling the fractal surfaces associated with turbulence and related phenomena. Squig intervals are constructed in three dimensions. Nonsymmetric eddies and the resulting squigs are tackled. Squig trees and intervals are drawn on unconventional lattices, either in the plane or in a prescribed fractal surface. Peyriére'sM systems are mentioned: their study includes the proof that the informal renormalization argument (involving a transfer matrix) is exact for squigs.Presented at theThird Conference on Fractals: Fractals in the Physical Sciences, held at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, Maryland, on November 20–23, 1983.The reader's attention should be drawn to the fact that the second and later printings of this book include an update chapter and additional references. The expected traffic growth from new broadband services will require network capacities that can be beneficially provided by optical WDM transport networks. Optical packet techniques are essential for large networks to provide flexibility and granularity. A layered network architecture with a transparent optical layer and optical packet layers has been elaborated. Four switching concept options for large optical ATM switch fabrics in the public network and small access nodes are presented. The technology for the related key functions of space and wavelength switching was developed in the RACE ATMOS project and the feasibility of concepts and technologies was verified in four system demonstrators.  相似文献

The fracton/spectral dimensionality D fracton is an important characteristic of fractal processes. Until now, it has not been interpreted as the fractal dimensionality of any well-defined fractal set, and it has been claimed that D fracton is more intrinsic than the fractal dimensionality. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) can estimate parameters relating to blood flow and tissue volume fractions and therefore may be used to characterize the response of breast tumors to treatment. To assess treatment response, values of these DCE-MRI parameters are observed at different time points during the course of treatment. We propose a method whereby DCE-MRI data sets obtained in separate imaging sessions can be co-registered to a common image space, thereby retaining spatial information so that serial DCE-MRI parameter maps can be compared on a voxel-by-voxel basis. In performing inter-session breast registration, one must account for patient repositioning and breast deformation, as well as changes in tumor shape and volume relative to other imaging sessions. One challenge is to optimally register the normal tissues while simultaneously preventing tumor distortion. We accomplish this by extending the adaptive bases algorithm through adding a tumor-volume preserving constraint in the cost function. We also propose a novel method to generate the simulated breast magnetic resonance (MR) images, which can be used to evaluate the proposed registration algorithm quantitatively. The proposed nonrigid registration algorithm is applied to both simulated and real longitudinal 3D high resolution MR images and the obtained transformations are then applied to lower resolution physiological parameter maps obtained via DCE-MRI. The registration results demonstrate the proposed algorithm can successfully register breast MR images acquired at different time points and allow for analysis of the registered parameter maps.  相似文献

The two-neutron halo nucleus (14)Be has been investigated in a kinematically complete measurement of the fragments ((12)Be and neutrons) produced in dissociation at 35 MeV/nucleon on C and Pb targets. Two-neutron removal cross sections, neutron angular distributions, and invariant mass spectra were measured, and the contributions from electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) were deduced. Comparison with three-body model calculations suggests that the halo wave function contains a large nu(2s(1/2))(2) admixture. The EMD invariant mass spectrum exhibited enhanced strength near threshold consistent with a nonresonant soft-dipole excitation.  相似文献

Single-wall carbon nanotube deposition on the cladding of optical fibers has been carried out to fabricate an all-fiber nonlinear device. Two different nanotube deposition techniques were studied. The first consisted of repeatedly immersing the optical fiber into a nanotube supension, increasing the thickness of the coating in each step. The second deposition involved wrapping a thin film of nanotubes around the optical fiber. For both cases, interaction of transmitted light through the fiber core with the external coating was assisted by the cladding mode resonances of a tilted fiber Bragg grating. Ultrafast nonlinear effects of the nanotube-coated fiber were measured by means of a pump-probe pulses experiment.  相似文献
