p-Adic Dynamics and Sullivan's No Wandering Domains Theorem

In this paper we study dynamics on the Fatou set of a rational function . Using a notion of components of the Fatou set defined by Benedetto, we state and prove an analogue of Sullivan's No Wandering Domains Theorem for p-adic rational functions which have no wild recurrent Julia critical points.     

Optimizing separation conditions for riboflavin,flavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide in capillary zone electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection

DNA sequencing is performed in a multiplexed capillary electrophoresis system by UV absorption detection. Four individual electropherograms are obtained by simultaneously running the unlabeled DNA products of the four ddNTP-terminated reactions in the capillary array. The sequence of the template used in the cycle-sequencing reaction can be determined by overlaying the four electropherograms. Two internal standards are employed to adjust for the variance in migration times among the capillaries. After applying the correction algorithm, base calling can be done at a high level of confidence.     

Evaluation of the enantiomeric selectivity in the chiral ligand-exchange chromatography of amino acids by a computational model

The chromatographic resolution of enantiomeric amino acids is accomplished on a reversed phase column using aqueous mobile phase containing the chiral reagent N,N-dimethyl-S-phenylalanine-Cu(II). The separation is a result of the whole interaction between the diastereomeric complex surface and the mixed stationary phase realized by the dynamic coating of the RP-18 carbon chains layer. The elution order seems to be related to the different water coordination capability on copper ion in the formation of the mixed ternary complexes.     

Analytical characterisation of pigments on pre-Roman pottery by means of spectroscopic techniques Part I: white coloured shards

This paper is part of a systematic archaeometric investigation aimed at the characterisation of the pigments and related materials (ligand, colour substrate) used in decoration of pottery excavated in the archaeological zone of Canosa (Puglia, Italy). Shards found in thirteen different tombs have been analysed; in this paper samples exhibiting a white colouration have been selected. Both surface (XPS) and bulk (FT-IR) spectroscopies were used which gave complementary information and enabled white pigments to be divided into two groups. Moreover, X-ray diffraction was used in some cases to further support some spectral assignments. The molecular specificity of FT-IR, when applied to the analysis of both pigments and ceramic body, allowed the identification of the various constituents and, hence, provided indirect information on the end-use of the original wares. The potential of the combined use of different spectroscopies to obtain valuable information on both painting materials and technical aspects is shown.     

Understanding deadlock and livelock behaviors in Hybrid Control Systems

This paper introduces a formal definition and a categorization of Deadlock and Livelock behaviors for a general class of deterministic Hybrid Control Systems (HCS), thus extending the classical notion known for (uncontrolled) discrete transition systems. This characterization hinges on three important aspects: (1) the concept of composition (or interconnection) of HCSs; (2) the notion of control-dependent specification, and that of composition of specifications; (3) the dynamical structure of an HCS and its related behaviors. The first notion is introduced in a novel manner, by including aspects from the literature of discrete transition systems, as well as accounting for classical concepts such as that of feedback interconnection of dynamical systems. The second point allows us to formally express general properties that are of interest from a systems and control theory perspective. The third part discriminates between the different and possibly pathological behaviors that are characteristic to HCSs. After commenting on the issues of Deadlock and Livelock prevention and verification, the article concludes with two case studies.     

A quantitative maximum entropy theorem for the real line

A bound B is constructed for a large and natural class of entropy integrals on the real line. The construction involves Burg's maximum entropy theorem for the circle group and techniques from harmonic analysis. As the solution of an extension problem, the construction of B leads to a further construction problem which can be viewed as a means of refining Krein's theorem on positive definite extensions.Supported in part by the NSF under Grant DMS 86-01311.
