Listeners asked to detect tones masked by noise hear frequent signals but miss infrequent probes, suggesting that they attend to spectral regions where they expect the signals to occur. The narrow detection pattern centered on the frequent target approximates that obtained in notched noise, indicating that attention is focused on the auditory filter. We measured attention bands in young and elderly listeners (n=5, 4; 20-25 and 62-82 years of age) for targets (800 or 1200 Hz) and infrequent probe signals (target +/-25-100 Hz) masked in wideband noise. We anticipated that their width would increase with age, as has been reported for auditory filters. A yes-no single-interval procedure provided detection probabilities and detection response speeds. Both measures showed near-linear declines with decreasing signal level, and graded decay functions as probe frequency deviated from the target frequency. Probes deviating from the target by 25 to 50 Hz were equivalent to a 2-dB reduction in signal level for both measures. The equivalent rectangular bandwidth (ERB) for detection approximated 11% of the signal frequency for each age group. Confidence intervals (95%) showed that the elderly ERB could be at most only about 20% larger than that of younger listeners.  相似文献

We propose subject matter expert refined topic (SMERT) allocation, a generative probabilistic model applicable to clustering freestyle text. SMERT models are three‐level hierarchical Bayesian models in which each item is modeled as a finite mixture over a set of topics. In addition to discrete data inputs, we introduce binomial inputs. These ‘high‐level’ data inputs permit the ‘boosting’ or affirming of terms in the topic definitions and the ‘zapping’ of other terms. We also present a collapsed Gibbs sampler for efficient estimation. The methods are illustrated using real world data from a call center. Many aquatic species such as dolphins and whales have fins, which can be modeled as swept wings. Some of these fins, such as the dorsal fin of a dolphin, are semi-rigid and therefore can be modeled as a rigid swept wing with a compliant surface. An understanding of the hydrodynamics of the flow past swept compliant surfaces is of great interest for understanding potential drag reduction mechanisms, especially since swept wings are widely used in hydrodynamic and aerodynamic design. In this paper, the flow past a swept wing with a compliant surface is modeled by an attachment-line boundary layer flow, which is an exact similarity solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, flowing past a compliant surface modeled as an elastic plate. The hydrodynamic stability of the coupled problem is studied using a new numerical framework based on exterior algebra. The basic instability of the attachment line boundary layer on a rigid surface is a traveling wave instability that propagates along the attachment line, and numerical results show that the compliance results in a substantial reduction in the instability region. Moreover, the results show that, although the flow-field is three-dimensional, the qualitative nature of the instability suppression is very similar to the qualitative reduction of instability of the two-dimensional Tollmien–Schlichting modes in the classical boundary-layer flow past a compliant surface.  相似文献

Aims

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of 4D flow MRI to assess valve effective orifice area (EOA) in patients with aortic stenosis as determined by the jet shear layer detection (JSLD) method.

Methods and Results

An in-vitro stenosis phantom was used for validation and in-vivo imaging was performed in 10 healthy controls and 40 patients with aortic stenosis. EOA was calculated by the JSLD method using standard 2D phase contrast MRI (PC-MRI) and 4D flow MRI measurements (EOAJSLD-2D and EOAJSLD-4D, respectively). As a reference standard, the continuity equation was used to calculate EOA (EOACE) with the 2D PC-MRI velocity field and compared to the EOAJSLD measurements. The in-vitro results exhibited excellent agreement between flow theory (EOA = 0.78 cm2) and experimental measurement (EOAJSLD-4D = 0.78 ± 0.01 cm2) for peak velocities ranging from 0.9 to 3.7 m/s. In-vivo results showed good correlation and agreement between EOAJSLD-2D and EOACE (r = 0.91, p < 0.001; bias: − 0.01 ± 0.38 cm2; agreement limits: 0.75 to − 0.77 cm2), and between EOAJSLD-4D and EOACE (r = 0.95, p < 0.001; bias: − 0.09 ± 0.26 cm2; limits: 0.43 to − 0.62 cm2).

Conclusion

This study demonstrates the feasibility of measuring EOAJSLD using 4D flow MRI. The technique allows for optimization of the EOA measurement position by visualizing the 3D vena contracta, and avoids potential sources of EOACE measurement variability.  相似文献

A dispersion condition for traders' forecasts in a general equilibrium model with uncertainty and asymmetric information yields improved results for some (microeconomic) situations in which rational expectations equilibria need not exist. The hypothesis of suitably dispersed forecasts implies that consumers' aggregate excess demand is a continuous function and therefore a fixed point theorem may be applied to obtain a price vector (for each state of the world) such that markets clear. Stronger assumptions give existence of approximately rational expectations equilibria and the convergence of forecast distributions to rational expectations.  相似文献

In a recent paper, Mallett found a solution of the Einstein equations in which closed timelike curves (CTC’s) are present in the empty space outside an infinitely long cylinder of light moving in circular paths around an axis. Here we show that, for physically realistic energy densities, the CTC’s occur at distances from the axis greater than the radius of the visible universe by an immense factor. We then show that Mallett’s solution has a curvature singularity on the axis, even in the case where the intensity of the light vanishes. Thus it is not the solution one would get by starting with Minkowski space and establishing a cylinder of light.  相似文献

Spinel-structured solids were studied to understand if fast Li+ ion conduction can be achieved with Li occupying multiple crystallographic sites of the structure to form a “Li-stuffed” spinel, and if the concept is applicable to prepare a high mixed electronic-ionic conductive, electrochemically active solid solution of the Li+ stuffed spinel with spinel-structured Li-ion battery electrodes. This could enable a single-phase fully solid electrode eliminating multi-phase interface incompatibility and impedance commonly observed in multi-phase solid electrolyte–cathode composites. Materials of composition Li1.25M(III)0.25TiO4, M(III) = Cr or Al were prepared through solid-state methods. The room-temperature bulk Li+-ion conductivity is 1.63 × 10−4 S cm−1 for the composition Li1.25Cr0.25Ti1.5O4. Addition of Li3BO3 (LBO) increases ionic and electronic conductivity reaching a bulk Li+ ion conductivity averaging 6.8 × 10−4 S cm−1, a total Li-ion conductivity averaging 4.2 × 10−4 S cm−1, and electronic conductivity averaging 3.8 × 10−4 S cm−1 for the composition Li1.25Cr0.25Ti1.5O4 with 1 wt. % LBO. An electrochemically active solid solution of Li1.25Cr0.25Mn1.5O4 and LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 was prepared. This work proves that Li-stuffed spinels can achieve fast Li-ion conduction and that the concept is potentially useful to enable a single-phase fully solid electrode without interphase impedance.  相似文献
