Joint distributions of numbers of success runs of specified lengths in linear and circular sequences
In this paper, we study two joint distributions of the numbers of success runs of several lengths in a sequence ofn Bernoulli trials arranged on a line (linear sequence) or on a circle (circular sequence) based on four different enumeration
schemes. We present formulae for the evaluation of the joint probability functions, the joint probability generating functions
and the higher order moments of these distributions. Besides, the present work throws light on the relation between the joint
distributions of the numbers of success runs in the circular and linear binomial model. We give further insights into the
run-related problems arisen from the circular sequence. Some examples are given in order to illustrate our theoretical results.
Our results have potential applications to other problems such as statistical run tests for randomness and reliability theory.

Marine organisms, including phyto‐ and zoo‐plankton, macroalgae, and animals, concentrate arsenic in various organic forms. However, the distribution and fate of these organoarsenicals in marine environments remains unclear. In this study, the distribution of organoarsenicals in coastal marine sediment in Otsuchi Bay, Japan, has been determined. Methylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid, trimethylarsine oxide, arsenobetaine, arsenocholine and other unidentified arsenic species were detected in marine sediment by high‐performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis of methanol–water extracts. Arsenobetaine was the dominant organoarsenical at four of the seven stations where tests were carried out, and unidentified species or dimethylarsinic acid dominated at the other stations. Total organoarsenicals (as arsenic) in the surface sediment amounted to 10.6–47.5 µg kg?1 dry sediment. Core analysis revealed that concentrations of organoarsenicals decreased with depth, and they are considered to be degraded within 60 years of deposition. These results show that organoarsenicals formed by marine organisms are delivered to the sediment and can be degraded within several decades. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Thermotropic POSS‐containing poly(methacrylate) with long alkyl chain tethered polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in the side chain and the block copolymers (PMMA‐b‐PMAC11POSS) were developed by through living anionic polymerization. The resulting polymers indicated a phase transition temperature at 112 °C from spherocrystal to isotropic phase. The POSS‐containing polymer segments tended to form matrix of microphase‐separated nanostructures in the bulk even in the very low volume fraction, for instance, PMMA cylindrical nanostructure was obtained by PMMA175‐b‐PMAC11POSS11 (?PMAC11POSS = 0.44). The control of thin film morphology was carried out by not only solvent annealing, but also thermal annealing, resulting in the formation of well‐ordered dot‐ and fingerprint‐type nanostructures. This is the first report in a series of POSS‐containing block polymers that are capable for thermal annealing to generate well‐ordered microphase‐separated nanostructures in thin films. In this paper we introduce a Markov chain imbeddable vector of multinomial type and a Markov chain imbeddable variable of returnable type and discuss some of their properties. These concepts are extensions of the Markov chain imbeddable random variable of binomial type which was introduced and developed by Koutras and Alexandrou (1995, Ann. Inst. Statist. Math., 47, 743–766). By using the results, we obtain the distributions and the probability generating functions of numbers of occurrences of runs of a specified length based on four different ways of counting in a sequence of multi-state trials. Our results also yield the distribution of the waiting time problems. 相似文献
