Synthesis and stereochemical properties of chiral square complexes of iron(II)

The hexadentate, and ditopic ligand 2,5-bis([2,2']bipyridin-6-yl)pyrazine yields a chiral, tetrameric, square-shaped, self-assembled species upon complexation with Fe2+ ions. The racemate of this complex was resolved with antimonyl tatrate as the chiral auxiliary. The purity of the enantiomer was determined by NMR spectroscopy, by using a chiral, diamagnetic shift reagent, and by circular dichroism (CD). The CD spectrum was also calculated by time-dependent density functional theory, and the correlation that was found between CD spectrum and configuration was confirmed by X-ray cristallography. When a "chiralised" version of the ligand was used instead, the corresponding iron complex was obtained in diastereomerically pure form.     

Line profile study with tunable diode laser spectrometers

In this paper, we present the different theoretical line profiles, which can be used to describe a shape of molecular transitions in dilute gases: the Voigt, Galatry, Rautian and speed dependence models. We discuss their limitations and their advantages, and present for illustration different comparisons of model results with experimental data obtained with several diode laser spectrometers suitable for precise line shape measurements.     

Optical tweezers applied to a microfluidic system

We will demonstrate how optical tweezers can be combined with a microfluidic system to create a versatile microlaboratory. Cells are moved between reservoirs filled with different media by means of optical tweezers. We show that the cells, on a timescale of a few seconds, can be moved from one reservoir to another without the media being dragged along with them. The system is demonstrated with an experiment where we expose E. coli bacteria to different fluorescent markers. We will also discuss how the system can be used as an advanced cell sorter. It can favorably be used to sort out a small fraction of cells from a large population, in particular when advanced microscopic techniques are required to distinguish various cells. Patterns of channels and reservoirs were generated in a computer and transferred to a mask using either a sophisticated electron beam technique or a standard laser printer. Lithographic methods were applied to create microchannels in rubber silicon (PDMS). Media were transported in the channels using electroosmotic flow. The optical system consisted of a combined confocal and epi-fluorescence microscope, dual optical tweezers and a laser scalpel.     

Design and synthesis of a novel family of semi-rigid ligands: versatile compounds for the preparation of 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals

Synthetic pathways to a range of novel semi-rigid tetradentate ligands, with sulfur, amido or amino donor groups, designed to coordinate technetium 99m have been developed. The technetium-99m complexes have been prepared and their stabilities in serum and by metathesis reaction via cysteine exchange reactions were compared. HPLC comparison of two (99m)Tc-complexes and their rhenium analogues led to the first proof of the nature of our radioactive complexes.     

Phoebegrandine C, a novel proaporphine-tryptamine dimer, from Phoebe grandis (Nees) Merr

A novel proaporphine-tryptamine dimer alkaloid, named phoebegrandine C 1, was isolated from the leaves of Phoebe grandis (Nees) Merr. Its structural elucidation was carried out using spectroscopic techniques, notably 2D NMR.     

Unprecedented in situ oxidative ring cleavage of isoxazolidines: diastereoselective transformation of nitronic acids and derivatives into 3-hydroxymethyl 4-nitro tetrahydrofurans and pyrrolidines

[reaction: see text] Nitronic acids undergo an intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to unactivated double bonds, and the resulting isoxazolidines spontaneously evolve by an unprecedented in situ oxidative ring cleavage. The extension of this transformation to silyl nitronates results in a general diastereoselective construction of hydroxymethyl nitro functionalized tetrahydro-furans and -pyrrolidine having up to four consecutive stereogenic centers.     

Alkynyltrifluoroborates as versatile tools in organic synthesis: a new route to spiroketals

[reaction: see text] A simple and efficient two-step approach to spiroketals is described. Key steps include the preparation of functionalized hydroxyl alpha-alkynones by ring-opening reactions of lactones with lithium alkynyltrifluoroborates followed by a palladium-catalyzed hydrogenation/spirocyclization of the prespiroketal intermediate.     

Steady light diffusion application to rheology: a new tool for the characterization of concentrated suspensions

We present new developments of steady light diffusion applied to rheology. Though many techniques allow the structural investigation of diluted or transparent media, very few give direct information on optically dense systems. The technique proposed here is based on the diffusion approximation and is thus valid for sheared, time-dependent flows.After recalling important theoretical results, we show the techniques ability to determine typical sizes and orientation of structures in shear flows for various concentrated suspensions (emulsions, and an industrial softener). In particular, it is able to demonstrate the effect of shear on the orientation of anisotropic objects. Moreover, the use of simple structural models incorporating the measured anisotropy allows good predictions of experimental rheological measurements. This new technique, applicable to a wide range of colloidal systems, is very helpful to characterize the shear induced structural organization of optically dense materials.This paper was presented at the first Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC) held in Guimarães, Portugal, September 11-13, 2003.     

Remarks on the formula for γ-interior

The paper presents a formula for the γ-interior of a set under special conditions for , more general than those in the previous paper [Acta Math. Hungar. 80 (1998) 89-93]. There are also some applications.
