Stability of porphyrin-calix[4]arene complexes analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

The stability of some porphyrin-calix[4]arene sodium-ion complexes were determined by a collision-activated decomposition (CAD) method utilizing electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Comparing the values of E(1/2), the collision energy at which the relative intensity of the complex ion is 0.5, we found that the porphyrin-calix[4]arene complex with the higher value of E(1/2) corresponded to that with the larger association constant (Kass), as measured by 1H-NMR in CDCl3. Both our ESI-MS and NMR studies proved that the number of hydrogen bonds and the rigidity of the calix[4]arene stabilized the complex. The ESI-MS technique could be successful in screening the binding affinity in host-guest systems with a small amount of sample.     

A total synthesis of spiruchostatin A

We achieved the total synthesis of the histone deacetylase inhibitor spiruchostatin A, as the prelude to the preparation of a combinatorial library of its analogues. Two key reactions were an asymmetric acetate aldol reaction using a Zr-enolate and macrolactonization using the Shiina method.     

Mössbauer spectrometica analysis of thermal decomposition products of phosphate and oxalate coatings on steel

The deterioration of zinc, zinc—calcium and manganese phosphate coatings and oxalate coatings on steel on heating was investigated by conversion electron Mössbauer spectrometry. and the chemical change of the coatings was analysed on the basis of the thermal characteristics of Zn₃(PO₄)₂·4H₂O, Zn₂Fe(PO₄)₄·4H₂O, CaZn₂(PO₄)₂·2H₂O, Fe₃(PO₄)₂·8H₂O. (Mn, Fe)₅H₂(PO₄)₄·4H₂O and FeC₂O₄·2H₂O. The steel substrate beneath the coatings influenced the thermal decomposition and evaporation of coating materials under the various heating atmospheres. The heat resistance of these coatings and the state of the substrate were also investigated.     

Preparation of Sr2CeO4:Eu3+,Dy3+ white luminescence phosphor particles and thin films by using an emulsion liquid membrane system

Sr(2)CeO(4) and Sr(2)CeO(4):Eu(3+),Dy(3+) phosphor particles and thin films were prepared by using an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM, water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsion) system, containing VA-10 (2-methyl-2-ethylheptanoic acid) as extractant (cation carrier). A two-step extraction enabled efficient extraction for Sr(3+) and rare earth ions, and the resulting precursor metal oxalate particles produced in the internal water phase of the ELM system were about 60 nm in diameter. Calcination of the oxalate particles in air gave submicrometer-sized Sr(2)CeO(4) and Sr(2)CeO(4):Eu(3+),Dy(3+) particles, which showed blue and white luminescence, respectively, by UV excitation. Blue and white luminescence phosphor thin films were also prepared by soaking alumina substrates into the W/O emulsion containing precursor oxalate particles, followed by calcination in air.     

Synthesis of new azonia-helicenes with a quaternary nitrogen at the inner helix skeleton

The 16c-azonia[6]helicene salts, in which a carbon atom at the inner helix skeleton of [6]helicene is replaced by a quaternary nitrogen atom, have been synthesized by photo-induced intramolecular quater-nization of 2-[2-(1-chloronaphthyl)vinyl]benzo[h]quinolines in acetonitrile.     

Electron correlations and transport effective mass in narrow-band systems and the Hubbard model

The Hubbard model is rederived from a tight-binding band calculation, showing that, as long as parameters are properly chosen, the model is justified for calculating electronic properties of narrow-band systems. The treatment is extended by including correlations and it was found that bound solutions called dimers exist. The concept of dimers is found to be very powerful for understanding the unusual properties of heavy fermion systems. However, a Mott-Hubbard-like model may be required to calculate properties of high T_c cuprates. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

A highly diastereoselective pinacol coupling reaction of aldehydes and ketones using low-valence niobium generated from Nb(V)

A simple method for the diastereoselective synthesis of racemic 1,2-diol mediated by low-valence niobium generated in situ is described. A 1,4-dioxane-toluene solvent system was found to be essential to achieve higher selectivities and to prevent other reactions of pinacols, such as deoxygenation and acetal formation. Aromatic aldehydes and ketones were converted to the corresponding pinacols with up to 97 and 85% de, respectively.     

Analysis to obtain precise density fluctuation of supercritical fluids by small-angle X-ray scattering

A procedure of analysis for small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data has been established to obtain density fluctuation of supercritical fluids near the critical point. It is indispensable for the certain analysis to utilize both of high-quality SAXS data measured under stable thermodynamic condition and accurate P–ρ–T data in supercritical region. As a standard example, SAXS measurements have been performed for supercritical CO₂, which is a suitable sample satisfying the condition for both experiment and analysis. The measurements were carried out along four isothermal conditions at reduced temperature of T_r = T/T_c = 1.020, 1.022, 1.043 and 1.064. Comparing the experimental density fluctuation with calculated one from the most reliable equation of state, the differences are within 8% at most.     

Effect of polycondensation methods on molecular weight distribution of nylon 610

Polycondensation methods greatly influence the molecular weight distribution of poly(hexamethylene sebacamide) (nylon 610) as determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The ratio of weight average molecular weight to number average molecular weight (M_w/M_n) was used as a measure for estimating the molecular weight distribution. The M_w/M_n ratios of nylon 610 obtained from melt, solid phase, and high temperature polycondensation methods were 2 to 3.5, which were expected values for the most probable distribution. However, those for polymers obtained from the direct polycondensation in the presence of triphenylphosphine, interfacial polycondensation and low temperature polycondensation using an acid chloride varied over a wide range from 3.5 to 8.5. The effect of the kind of organic solvents in the interfacial method on the M_w/M_n ratios was especially large, and the molecular weight distribution could be controlled to some extent by selecting an appropriate solvent.     

Ca0.8Y2.4Sn0.8O6, a quaternary oxide with mixed occupations of Ca/Y and Y/Sn

A new quaternary oxide, calcium yttrium stannate, Ca_0.8Y_2.4Sn_0.8O₆, is isostructural with Mg₃TeO₆ (trigonal, R). The empirical formula can be expressed as (Ca_0.2667Y_0.7333)₆(Y_0.4Sn_0.6)SnO₁₂. The Ca/Y site has a distorted coordination octa­hedron of O atoms, with Ca/Y—O distances ranging from 2.227 (3) to 2.350 (3) Å, while the octa­hedra of O atoms that coordinate to the Sn and Y/Sn sites are nearly regular, with an Sn—O distance of 2.066 (2) Å and a Y/Sn—O distance of 2.147 (3) Å.
