ESR study on the reactivity of two isomers of LaC82 with disilirane

We observed photochemical and thermal addition of disilirane to the LaC₈₂-A isomer, which give new ESR active species. Both ESR spectra of the adducts in photo- and thermal reactions are well simulated by at least six octet components, and the isotropic La coupling constants and g-factors of the six octet components are determined. On the other hand, the reaction of the LaC₈₂-B isomer with disilirane gives no ESR active species. This fact is also verified by mass spectroscopic measurements. The different reactivities with disilirane of the two isomers are not interpreted by a popular view that the two isomers have a different C₈₂ cage structure, but we rather suggest that the origin of the isomers of metallofullerenes should be re-examined.     

Charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase from a monoclinic single domain of NaV2O5 uniquely determined by resonant x-ray scattering

The present resonant x-ray scattering has been performed on a monoclinically split single domain of NaV(2)O(5). The observation of a critically enhanced contrast between V(4+) and V(5+) ions has led us to the unequivocal conclusion of the charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase of NaV(2)O(5) below T(c) = 35 K. In spite of the possible four types of configuration of the zigzag-type charge-order patterns in the ab plane (A,A',B and B'), the stacking sequence along the c axis is determined as the AAA'A' type by comparison with model calculations.     

In situ observation of single polymers adsorbed onto mica surfaces in water

The morphology of a cationic polymer of high molecular weight, poly[2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl(trimethyl)ammoniumchloride], adsorbed on to a mica surface in water was observed in situ using the tapping mode of an atomic force microscope with a high-resolution probe. It was found that the morphology of adsorbed polymers changes with time to be lumplike, floclike, and then fibril-like and that it takes surprisingly a long time for the polymers to relax completely in water, even though they are highly charged. Detailed structures of extended polymers are also discussed.     

Catalytic intermolecular Pauson-Khand-type reaction: strong directing effect of pyridylsilyl and pyrimidylsilyl groups and isolation of Ru complexes relevant to catalytic reaction

Some circumstantial evidence for the directing effect of the 2-pyridylsilyl group in the Ru-catalyzed intermolecular Pauson-Khand-type reaction (PKR) of alkenyl(2-pyridyl)silane, alkyne, and carbon monoxide has been provided. Most importantly, we have succeeded in isolating several monometallic Ru complexes relevant to the catalytic reaction: Ru(vinylsilane)(CO)(3) complexes and ruthenacyclopentene. While the stoichimetric reaction of the Ru(vinylsilane)(CO)(3) complex with an alkyne led to the formation of the corresponding cyclopentenone (PKR product) at 100 degrees C, the ruthenacyclopentene intermediate was quantitatively produced at 50 degrees C. This complex was also converted to a cyclopentenone upon heating at 100 degrees C. Moreover, it was also found that the Ru(vinylsilane)(CO)(3) complex and ruthenacyclopentene serve as catalysts in intermolecular PKR.     

Digital phase-shifting interferometer with an electrically addressed liquid-crystal spatial light modulator

A digital phase-shifting interferometer with a liquid-crystal-display coupled, parallel aligned, nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator is developed. The optical phase shift in the Michelson-type polarization interferometer is achieved by a digital phase shift of a grating displayed on the spatial light modulator. Accurate experimental results of using the heterodyne system for pi/2 phase steps were demonstrated. A phase-shifting interferometer with no moving parts and no requirement for calibration of the value of the phase shift was achieved.     

Plasma production by helicon and slow waves

The observation of slow-wave sustained (SW) discharge in a whistler- or helicon-wave range of frequency is made using high-frequency and very-high-frequency bands of rf. The SW discharge occurs at an extremely low rf power and plasma density, which are lower than a capacitive-coupling discharge region.     

Fascicularones H–K,Four New Sesquiterpenoids from the Cultured Mycelia of the Fungus Hypholoma fasciculare

The AcOEt extract of Hypholoma fasciculare yielded four new congeners, fascicularones H ( 4 ), I ( 5 ), J ( 6 ), and K ( 7 ). All structures were unambiguously established by 1D and 2D NMR and MS data. In a lettuce seedling assay, compounds 4 – 7 showed radicle elongation.     

Calculation of the critical point for mixtures using mixture models based on Helmholtz energy equations of state

This paper mainly focuses on refrigerant mixtures with relatively simple critical behavior, and presents a practical and useful method for the critical point calculation for the mixtures using mixture models based on Helmholtz energy equations of state. The expression for critical point criterion suitable for this objective is derived first. Numerical manipulations to obtain a physically correct solution are described in detail. For four binary refrigerant mixtures of difluoromethane (R-32) + pentafluoroethane (R-125), R-125 + 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a), R-125 + 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (R-143a), and R-32 + propane (R-290), the critical temperatures and critical molar volumes are calculated applying the presented method. The calculation results are compared with experimental values, and the capabilities of the mixture models for the mixtures in the critical region are discussed.
