Magnetic behavior of USe at low temperatures

The magnetization versus temperature behavior of USe has been investigated in the temperature range from 2.8 to 300°K and in various applied fields up to 21 kOe. A sharp decrease in magnetization is found at low temperatures. This behavior seems to be associated with the rhombohedral distortion in crystal structure, giving rise to a high anisotropy field, below the Curie temperature. Large magnetic hysteresis effects at low temperatures confirm these arguments.     

Laser-assisted collisional effects in non-linear optical phenomena: Six-wave difference frequency mixing in mercury vapor

Laser-assisted collisional phenomena have been observed in non-linear optical studies of harmonic generation in Hg vapor. Spectral profiles showing the characteristic assymetric broadening, which are the signature of such effects, have been obtained for both single- laser and two-laser pump-probe experiments. The latter clearly shows that harmonic radiation is only produced by the application of a “dressing” laser field.     

Magnetic band structure in the valence band of CdSb

Starting from the band structure calculations of Yamada, we have undertaken to calculate in analytic form the Landau levels, de Haas-Shubnikov oscillation periods and effective masses in the valence band of CdSb. Because of the anomalous character of the E — k relation in the x-direction, it is necessaryto use different approximation methods for low and high hole energies; between the two is a region for which calculation is very difficult. Analytic forms have been obtained in both regimes, which should facilitate the calculation of magneto-transport properties and thus the determination of band parameters.     

A piecewise linear upper bound on the network recourse function

We consider the optimal value of a pure minimum cost network flow problem as a function of supply, demand and arc capacities. We present a new piecewise linear upper bound on this function, which is called the network recourse function. The bound is compared to the standard Madansky bound, and is shown computationally to be a little weaker, but much faster to find. The amount of work is linear in the number of stochastic variables, not exponential as is the case for the Madansky bound. Therefore, the reduction in work increases as the number of stochastic variables increases. Computational results are presented.
