Synthesis of microspheres stabilized sterically with two-component grafted chains by dispersion copolymerizations using mixture of two macromonomers in nonaqueous media

The polymer microspheres were synthesized by dispersion copolymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) with two vinylbenzyl-terminated poly(ethylene glycol methylether) (PEG)/poly(t-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) macromonomer blends in methanol. In these systems of two macromonomer blends as the emulsifier, the polymer microspheres formed had a very narrow particle size distribution. Two macromonomers formed comicelles with DVB monomer and acted not only as the comonomer but also as the stabilizer. Such polymer microspheres were stabilized sterically with two-component grafted chains, such as PEG and PBMA, in methanol.     

Hole drilling in stainless steel and silicon by femtosecond pulses at low pressure

We report on the ablation and hole drilling in stainless steel SUS304 and Si by femtosecond pulses (wavelength 800 nm; pulse duration >80 fs) at the room and low (5 Torr) air pressure ambient. It was found that the quality of surface processing is improved at low pressure avoiding debris formation. The improvement is due to suppression of the conical emission, resulting from the air optical breakdown at a pre-surface area of sample. Debris-free processing of the movable Si-MEMS components is demonstrated. Techniques for the precise measurement of focal spot size and pulse duration are discussed. Quantum phase transition in quasi-one-dimensional BaRu6O12

We report the first systematic study of the electrical transport and magnetic properties of BaRu6O12, which has a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) hollandite structure. We show that BaRu6O12 is quasi-1D electronically as well. Its physical properties were found to be extremely sensitive to disorder. Furthermore, a transition from being metallic with a resistance drop around 2 K to being weakly insulating as the applied magnetic field was increased was also found. We propose that these two features are related to the possible presence of a quantum phase transition in this material system.     

Allylation of methylenecyclopropanes with allylindium reagents

Methylenecyclopropanes carrying a hydroxymethyl group at the ring underwent stereoselective allylindation with allylindium sesquiiodide to afford the allylated products, in which the allyl group was delivered at the external sp² carbon via cyclopropylindium intermediates. The reaction of ethyl 2-cyclopropylideneacetate and triallylindium afforded the 1,4-adduct along with dimeric products.     

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near √s = 10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e(+)e(-) annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered π(+)π(-) pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb(-1) data sample that contains 711 × 10(6) π(+)π(-) pairs and was collected at and near the Υ(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider.     

Synthesis of polymers by template polymerization. I. Template polymerization of poly(methacrylic acid) with β‐cyclodextrin

A novel template monomer with multiple methacryloyl groups was synthesized with β‐cyclodextrin by the acetylation of primary hydroxyl groups and the esterification of secondary hydroxyl groups with methacrylic acid anhydride. The average number of methacryloyl groups in the monomer was 11. The radical polymerization of the monomer was carried out with the following initiators: α,α′‐azobisisobutylonitrile, H₂O₂? Fe²⁺ redox initiator, p‐xylyl‐N,N‐dimethyldithiocarbamate (XDC), and α‐bromo‐p‐xylyl‐N,N‐dimethyldithiocarbamate (BXDC). When the concentration of the monomer was less than 4.12 × 10^?3 M, polymerization was limited inside the molecule, and gelation of the system was hindered. For controlled radical photopolymerization with XDC and BXDC, the methacryloyl groups of the monomer were homogeneously polymerized, and poly(methacrylic acid) with a narrow molecular weight distribution was obtained by the hydrolysis of the polymerized products. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Palladium-catalyzed amidation by chemoselective C(sp3)-H activation: concise route to oxindoles using a carbamoyl chloride precursor

Quite select: a new strategy was developed for the synthesis of various oxindoles from carbamoyl chlorides. Under the optimum reaction conditions, with Ad(2)PBu as a ligand, tBuCONHOH as an additive, and a CO atmosphere, selective C(sp(3))-H activation proceeded in the presence of a C(sp(2))-H bond.
