Züchtung von Einkristallen ternärer Lanthanoid-Vanadium(III)-oxide LnVO3 durch Schmelzflußelektrolyse

Growth of Single Crystals of Ternary Rare Earth Vanadium(III) Oxides LnVO₃ by Flux Electrolysis A simple method for growing single crystals of rare earth vanadium(III) oxides LnVO₃ (Ln = La, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er, Yb) by cathodic reduction, starting from vanadium(V) oxide, in a flux of sodium tetraborate and sodium fluoride at T = 1000 K is described. The products were obtained as black, prismatic crystals, suitable for X-ray investigations etc. They were characterized by electron microprobe analyses and by X-ray powder investigations.     

Characterization of the new Bi∼6.2Cu∼6.2O8(PO4)5 oxyphosphate; a disordered compound containing 2- and 3-O(Bi, Cu)4 tetrahedra—wide polycationic ribbons

The present work is dedicated to the XRD, ED and HREM characterization of a new bismuth copper oxyphosphate Bi_∼6.2Cu_∼6.2O₈(PO₄)₅ (a=11.599(2)Å, , c=37.541(5)Å, R₁=0.0755, Rw₂₌0.174, G.S Pn2₁a). The relatively long size of its c parameter is due to the arrangement along this direction of two kinds of ribbon-like polycations formed by edge sharing O(Bi, Cu)₄ tetrahedra. The existence of such cations is characterized by the b∼5.2 Å value intrinsic to the ribbons structure and commonly found in bismuth oxyphosphate materials. In the title compound, 2-tetrahedra wide [Bi_∼2.4Cu_∼3.6O₄]^6.4+ and 3-tetrahedra wide [Bi_∼5Cu_∼3O₆]⁹⁺ ribbons are isolated by phosphate groups and alternate along c. The interstitial site created between two different sizes ribbons is occupied by Cu²⁺ cations disordered over several close crystallographic sites. The mixed Bi³⁺/Cu²⁺ nature of certain edge-of-ribbons positions induces a disorder over several configurations of the phosphate groups. The concerned oxygen atoms form the environment of the disordered interstitial Cu²⁺ cations which occupy tunnels formed by the phosphate anions. The high-resolution electron microscope study enables a precise correlation between the observed images and the refined crystal structure, evidencing the polycations visualization. Furthermore, this material being the second example of partially disordered compound similar chemical system, some topological rules can be deduced. The b-axis doubling was observed by ED and HREM and is assigned to the ordering of interstitial Cu²⁺ within tunnels cations. A partial intra-tunnel ordering was also observed.     

Study of hydrogen adsorption on iridium catalysts

The influence of dispersity on hydrogen adsorption on Ir black and Ir/C catalysts has been studied. It is shown that supported iridium reduces the heat of hydrogen adsorption as compared to Ir black. With decreasing catalyst dispersity, the amount of weakly bound hydrogen increases, while its adsorption heat decreases on all Ir catalysts.

Recherches dans la série des cyclitols XLII. Synthèses de cyclitols tout-cis dérivés du cyclopentane; préparation des cyclopentane-tétrol et - pentol tout-cis

All-cis cyclitols derived from cyclopentane have been prepared in two ways: (i) by LiAlH₄ reduction of all-cis epoxypolyos; (ii) by dimethyl sulfoxide treatment, in the presence of sodium hydrogencarbonate, of brominated derivatives containing a neighbouring benzoyloxy group; under these conditions, the halogen is replaced by a cis-oriented hydroxyl group. Thus all-cis cyclopentane-tetrol and -pentol have been prepared; their configuration has been confirmed by NMR. spectroscopy.     

Isomerization of α-3,4-epoxy-4-methylcarane

Momentum conservation decides Heisenberg's interpretation of the uncertainty formulas

The present thesis considers, in the light of Heisenberg's interpretation of the uncertainty formulas, the conditions necessary for the derivation of the quantitative statement or law of momentum conservation. The result of such considerations is a contradiction between the formalism of quantum physics and the asserted consequences of Heisenberg's interpretation. This contradiction decides against Heisenberg's interpretation of the uncertainty formulas on upholding that the formalism of quantum physics is both consistent and complete, at least insofar as the statement of momentum conservation can be proved within this formalism. A few comments are also included on Bohr's complementarity interpretation of the formalism of quantum physics. A suggestion, based on a statistical mode of empirical testing of the uncertainty formulas, does not give rise to any such contradiction.     

Properties of argon liquid-vapor interface

The short-wave cutoff boundary of the capillary wave spectrum is established. Effective thickness L _b of the “bare” density profile in the interfacial layer is calculated according to experimental data on the ellipticity ratio of reflected light. The free parameters of the extended van der Waals theory of capillarity are determined. The positions of the equimolecular dividing surface and tension surface are calculated, as well as the temperature dependence of the Tolman parameter.     

Separation of organoselenium compounds and their electrochemical detection

A simplified procedure based on ion-exchange separation of selenourea (Se-U) and selenocystamine (Se-CM), which have very close half-wave potential when they are simultaneously analyzed by voltammetric techniques, has been developed and optimized. Thus, selenocystamine remains in the cation exchanger Purolite C 100 H, whereas selenourea is found in the effluent and is determined by square wave cathodic stripping voltammetry using Na₂CO₃ as electrolyte. Selenocystamine is then eluted from the cation exchanger using 4 M HCl and analyzed by square wave cathodic stripping voltammetry in the HCl solution. For each voltammetric determination the corresponding parameters were investigated and optimized; the obtained detection limits were 0.3 ng Se mL^–1 for Se-CM and 2 ng Se mL^–1 for Se-U. A flow sheet for the separation of inorganic (Se(IV) and Se(VI)) and organoselenium compounds (Se-U, Se-CM, (CH₃)₂Se₂, and (CH₃)₂Se) developed for their electrochemical detection is presented and it was successfully applied to a certified reference material, an environmental soil sample, and a urine sample.     

IR-spectroscopic studies of the interaction of pyridine bases with vanadium and molybdenum oxides supported on magnesia

As shown by IR-spectroscopic studies, pyridine bases interacting with V₂O₅ and MoO₃ supported on MgO form hydrogen bonds with surface hydroxyls and coordinate bonds with V and Mo ions. The interaction of 2,6-dimethylpyridine adsorbed on the surface with oxygen leads to the formation of 6-methylpyridine-2-carboxaldehyde, whose formyl group interacts with surface hydroxyls.
