Copolymerization of propylene with acrylate by a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst

Propylene was polymerized by using a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst in the presence of ethylchloroaluminum acrylate, which was formed by the reaction of diethylaluminum chloride with acrylic acid. The polymer obtained contained acrylic units which were proved to be copolymerized with propylene units by solvent extraction, infrared spectrum, and NMR spectrum. The copolymer showed much improved properties compared with the polypropylene homopolymer.     

Synthesis and evaluation of 5-thio-L-fucose-containing oligosaccharide

5-Thio-L-fucose-containing trisaccharide H-type II was synthesized. The 3',4'-O-isopropylidene-2-azido-2-deoxylactoside derivative, which was prepared from lactose by azidonitration of lactal, was used as a starting material. By regio- and stereoselective 5-thio-L-fucosylation of the 6,6'-dibenzoate 5 with 5-thiofucosyl trichloroacetimidate 6 and subsequent deprotection gave the 5-thio-L-fucose-containing H-type II 1. Conformational analysis of the 5-thio-L-fucose-containing H-type II and the native H-type II was carried out through NOESY experiments. The observed NOE values between N-acetylglucosamine and galactose, and galactose and fucose were same for these two trisaccharides. However, NOE values between fucose and N-acetylglucosamine were significantly different. Binding of the 5-thio-L-fucose-containing H-type II to lectins and antibodies were in some case stronger and in some case weaker than those of the native trisaccharide.     

Synthesis of Δ1[9]- and/or Δ8[9]-dehydroindolizidines and related compounds

A facile synthesis of Δ^1[9]- and/or Δ^8[9]-dehydroindolizidine and related compounds, consisting of dry distillation of γ-(N-2-piperidinonyl)butyric acid over soda-lime, is described. Reductions of these dehydroindolizidines and stereochemistry of 1-methylindolizidine are also described.     

Characterizations of isometric isomorphisms between uniform algebras via nonlinear range-preserving properties

Let be a surjective mapping from a uniform algebra on a compact Hausdorff space onto a uniform algebra on a compact Hausdorff space . Suppose that holds for every . Then we have that is an almost isometric isomorphism, which is a generalization of results of Molnár (2002) and Rao and Roy (2005).

     

Effect of pressure on the vibrational structure of insensitive energetic material 5-nitro-2,4-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole-3-one

The Raman spectra of alpha form 5-nitro-2,4-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole-3-one (alpha-NTO, space group P) were measured in a high-pressure vessel diamond anvil cell (DAC). The pressure was increased to 27.6 GPa. In general, Raman bands show a blue shift because of the nature of the molecule packing as a high-pressure effect, but some particular bands exhibited a red shift, disappearance, split, or slight shifting in our experiments. Those red-shifting bands concerning hydrogen bonds, i.e., carbonyl and amino groups, are likely to work as a stabilizer against stimuli to the molecule or crystal. This stabilizing nature might characterize the insensitivity of NTO. Molecular dynamic (MD) calculations were performed to reveal the high-pressure effect of the alpha-NTO crystal. The coordinates of individual atoms in the crystal structure were obtained using X-ray diffraction analysis. The pressure dependence of the power spectra of the correlation functions of the C=O bond length in NTO was calculated. A unique high-pressure effect of the alpha-NTO crystal was found on the power spectra. The peak frequency in the power spectrum of the C=O stretching vibration exhibited a red shift with an increase in pressure to 10.0 GPa, while the peak intensity considerably decreased under the same pressure process, because this bond length increased with an increase in pressure to 10.0 GPa. At a pressure of >20.0 GPa, a blue shift appeared. These results of the MD calculations are in good agreement with our experimental data.     

Three-dimensional susceptibility-weighted imaging at 3 T using various image analysis methods in the estimation of grading intracranial gliomas

Object

Although three-dimensional (3D), high-spatial resolution susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) appears to be valuable in the evaluation of central nervous system gliomas, several evaluation methods are proposed in the literature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of 3D SWI for grading intracranial gliomas with various analysis methods.

Materials and Methods

Twenty-three patients suspected of having gliomas participated in this study. SWI was performed in addition to conventional MR sequences. In 15 cases, post-gadolinium enhanced SWI was also obtained. Imaging evaluation criteria were conventional grade, hypointensity ratio in the tumor-dominant structure of hypointensity on SWI (hemorrhage or vascular structure) and presence of abnormal enhancement surrounding the tumor.

Results

Mean grading scores of conventional grade showed no statistically significant difference among WHO grades. Mean grading scores of hypointensity ratios in the tumor were higher for WHO Grades 3 and 4 than for lower grade tumors (P=.05, Mann–Whitney U test). Hemorrhagic foci were more frequently seen in the higher grade tumor. Post-contrast susceptibility-weighted images of five of 11 WHO Grade 3 and 4 cases showed bright enhancement surrounding the tumor, suggesting a breakdown of the blood–brain barrier.

Conclusions

SWI at 3 T may be a useful method to analyze the structural characteristics of gliomas and to evaluate pathology in vivo. Assessment of hypointensity ratios in the glioma was the most preferable method in grading glioma. However, more studies, specifically concerning a suitable method for image analysis, are needed to establish SWI at 3 T as a useful tool in clinical routine.     

The classification of special Cohen–Macaulay modules

In this paper we completely classify all the special Cohen–Macaulay (=CM) modules corresponding to the exceptional curves in the dual graph of the minimal resolutions of all two dimensional quotient singularities. In every case we exhibit the specials explicitly in a combinatorial way. Our result relies on realizing the specials as those CM modules whose first Ext group vanishes against the ring R, thus reducing the problem to combinatorics on the AR quiver; such possible AR quivers were classified by Auslander and Reiten. We also give some general homological properties of the special CM modules and their corresponding reconstruction algebras.     

The spring-8 project and the high pressure group in japan

Abstract

Two major synchrotron radiation projects are presented, the conversion of the 30GeV TRISTAN collider into an ultra-high-brilliance machine and Spring-8, the 8 GeV Japanese third generation source. The Japanese high-pressure group is introduced and its plans for Spring-8 are described in the context of the proposed scientific programme which covers physics and chemistry, earth and planetary science, material science and shock wave compression. The equipment programme and requirements include multianvil presses with high-temperature capability, diamond-anvil cells with low- or high-temperature capabilities, shock compression apparatus and image-plate systems. The latest developments include a high-sensitivity ruby fluorescence detector and a fan-type multiple slit system to allow the use of position-sensitive detectors with multianvil devices.
