Atomically resolved local variation of the barrier height of the flip-flop motion of single buckled dimers of Si(100)

The dynamics of the flip-flop motion of single buckled dimers of Si(100) was elucidated by locating the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope over a single flip-flopping dimer and measuring the tunneling current (time trace). Based on a statistical analysis of the time trace, we succeeded in estimating the activation energy and the energy splitting between the two stable configurations of buckling. Strong dependence of the dynamics of the flip-flop motion on the local environment was found: Activation energy differs significantly (directly measured 32 meV, estimated approximately 110 meV) for dimers in different domains.     

Deprotection of dithioacetals with 30% hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by tantalum(V) chloride–sodium iodide or niobium(V) chloride–sodium iodide

The reaction of dithioacetals with 30% hydrogen peroxide in the presence of catalytic amounts of tantalum(V) and iodide ion effectively produced carbonyl compounds in high yields. Dithioacetals also can be deprotected using the niobium(V) catalyzed oxidation of iodide ion by hydrogen peroxide under mild conditions.     

Rational design of smart supramolecular assemblies for gene delivery: chemical challenges in the creation of artificial viruses

Polymeric materials have been extensively developed as a delivery vehicle for nucleic acids over the past two decades. Many previous studies have demonstrated that synthetic delivery vehicles can be highly functionalized by chemical approaches to overcome biological barriers in nucleic acid delivery, similar to viruses. Based on our current knowledge, this tutorial review describes rational strategies in the design of polymeric materials to achieve construction of the versatile vehicles, that is "artificial viruses", for successful gene therapy, especially focusing on the chemical structures with the minimal adverse effects.     

The synthesis of hexahydrooxoepithiopyridinedicarboximides by the reaction of thioamides with N-substituted maleimides

The synthesis of hexahydrooxoepithiopyridinedicarboxyimide (5: X₂ = N-Ph) by the reaction of thioamides 1 with N-substituted maleimide ( 2a ) was examined. The reaction of primary thioamides, such as thiobenzamide and p-toluthioamide with N-phenylmaleimide gives compounds 5 together with corresponding 4-hydroxy-1,3-thiazoles 4 . However, a similar reaction of secondary thioamides, such as N-methylthioacetamide, thiobenzanilide, with N-phenylmaleimide did not provide compounds 5 without addition of acid. The reaction pathway and the configuration of 5 were also investigated.     

Acid-catalyzed deprotection mechanism of tert-butyloxycarbonyloxy polymers in chemically amplified resists

A mechanism of acid-catalyzed deprotection of poly(4-tert-butyloxycarbonyloxy-styrene), PBOCST, in chemically amplified resists has been elucidated in terms of elementary processes by means of semiempirical molecular orbital calculations. It is concluded that the overall deprotection of tert-butyloxycarbonyl (t-BOC) group proceeds stepwise; i.e., (a) the first products are an acid carbonate and a tert-butyl cation; (b) a phenolic compound is the secondary and final product from the acid carbonate, which is realized by assistance with a counter anion accompanied by acid; (c) the counter anion also assists acid regeneration from the tert-butyl cation to produce isobutylene. The yield rate of the phenol is proportional to the product of concentrations of the polymer, the catalytic acid, and the counter anion. The activation energy (21 kcal/mol) calculated for the rate-determining step (a) is in good agreement with an experiment. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ageladine A: an antiangiogenic matrixmetalloproteinase inhibitor from the marine sponge Agelas nakamurai

A novel MMP inhibitor, ageladine A (1) with antiangiogenic activity was isolated from a marine sponge Agelas nakamurai. Structure 1 was determined by a combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods to be an unprecedented structure of 4-(4,5-dibromo-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)]-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-2-amine.
