The reactions of 2-benzoylpyridine with [RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3] and [(C6H6)RuCl2]2

The reactions of [RuHCl(CO)(PPh₃)₃] and [(C₆H₆)RuCl₂]₂ with 2-benzoylpyridine have been examined, and two novel ruthenium(II) complexes – [RuCl(CO)(PPh₃)₂(C₅H₄NCOO)] and [RuCl₂(C₁₂H₉NO)₂] – have been obtained. The compounds have been studied by IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The molecular orbital diagrams of the complexes have been calculated with the density functional theory (DFT) method. The spin-allowed singlet–singlet electronic transitions of the compounds have been calculated with the time-dependent DFT method, and the UV–Vis spectra of the compounds have been discussed on this basis.

Abstract

The results of investigation of the quasi-Cherenkov (parametric) X-ray emission of 4.5 GeV electrons in diamond and quartz crystals are presented. A noticeable increase in X-ray photons yield has been observed under the influence of external factors (acoustic waves, temperature gradient).     

Sulfur Ligands. from β-Lactam Antibiotics to Contrast Agents for MRI

Abstract

NMR, IR and semi empirical Molecular Orbital PM3 studies on selected β-lactam antibiotics are reported. The role of sulfur in β-lactam antibiotics is discussed.     

Estimation of isotropic nuclear magnetic shieldings in the CCSD(T) and MP2 complete basis set limit using affordable correlation calculations

A linear correlation between isotropic nuclear magnetic shielding constants for seven model molecules (CH₂O, H₂O, HF, F₂, HCN, SiH₄ and H₂S) calculated with 37 methods (34 density functionals, RHF, MP2 and CCSD(T)), with affordable pcS‐2 basis set and corresponding complete basis set results, estimated from calculations with the family of polarization‐consistent pcS‐n basis sets is reported. This dependence was also supported by inspection of profiles of deviation between CBS estimated nuclear shieldings and shieldings obtained with the significantly smaller basis sets pcS‐2 and aug‐cc‐pVTZ‐J for the selected set of 37 calculation methods. It was possible to formulate a practical approach of estimating the values of isotropic nuclear magnetic shielding constants at the CCSD(T)/CBS and MP2/CBS levels from affordable CCSD(T)/pcS‐2, MP2/pcS‐2 and DFT/CBS calculations with pcS‐n basis sets. The proposed method leads to a fairly accurate estimation of nuclear magnetic shieldings and considerable saving of computational efforts. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

An Approach to A 1-Oxacephem Skeleton from D-Galactose

Abstract

2,4,6-Tri-O-benzyl-D-galactal (1) was transformed into a 1-oxacephem skeleton. The sequence of reaction involved: [2+2]cycloaddition, N-alkylation, glycolic cleavage of the vic-diol grouping, reduction of dialdehyde and cyclization to the title skeleton.     

The new method of fabrication of submicron structures by optical lithography with mask shifting and mask rotation

This paper presents the methods of fabricating narrow parallel submicrometric stripes in silicon dioxide and a resist layer. The experiments were conducted by two techniques: double patterning lithography and double exposure lithography. In addition to the above mentioned processes, mask translation was applied. For all conducted experiments, chrome masks and a 405 nm line of the high pressure mercury lamp of an MA-56 Mask Aligner System were used. The main aim of the performed tests was to establish the utility and the possible applications of the methods used.     

Acylation of novobiocin by carboxylic acid anhydrides: preparation and characterization of semi-synthetic novenamines

The acylation of novobiocin by carboxylic acid anhydrides leading to preparation of three families of semi-synthetic acylated novenamine analogues is reported. ESI-MS was used to monitor the reaction progress and enabled the isolation of intermediate compounds that provided insights into the sequence of acylation steps during the reaction. The chemoselectivity of the reaction depends on the carboxylic acid anhydride. The potential of the acylated novenamine analogues as leads for the development of antibacterial agents is discussed.     

Spontaneous generation of chirality and chiroptical spectra of N-nitroso-2,4-diaryl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonanes

The crystal structures of several bicyclic N-nitrosamines indicate that they crystallize in the chiral (Sohncke) space group P2₁2₁2₁ as conglomerates. This allows the resolution of these compounds by manual picking of the enantiomorphous crystals. The optical activity of the single crystals was confirmed by their CD spectra taken in KBr disks. The absolute configurations of the title nitrosamines were assigned by crystallographic measurements and by a comparison of their CD spectra with those of a reference compound resolved by classical methods. The observed Cotton effect signs, corresponding to the n–π¹ transition, were correlated with the helicity of the inherently chiral nitrosamine chromophore.     

Hydroindene-derived chiral synthons from carotol and their cytotoxicity

Ten enantiomerically pure hydroindene-derived compounds obtained by the transformation of (+)-carotol, the main constituent of carrot seed essential oil, were examined for their ability to inhibit the growth of myeloid leukaemia (HL-60) cancer cell lines. All compounds showed significant activity, which was comparable to the most active volatile organic compounds, such as trans–trans-farnesol, citral and nerolidol. Based on the bioactivity and molecular modelling, a 3D QSAR pharmacophore model was generated.
