The issue of natural radioactivity in groundwater is reviewed, with emphasis on those radioisotopes which contribute in a significant way to the overall effective dose received by members of the public due to the intake of drinking water originating from groundwater systems. The term 'natural radioactivity' is used in this context to cover all radioactivity present in the environment, including man-made (anthropogenic) radioactivity. Comprehensive discussion of radiological aspects of the presence of natural radionuclides in groundwater, including an overview of current regulations dealing with radioactivity in drinking water, is provided. The presented data indicate that thorough assessments of the committed doses resulting from the presence of natural radioactivity in groundwater are needed, particularly when such water is envisaged for regular intake by infants. They should be based on a precise determination of radioactivity concentration levels of the whole suite of radionuclides, including characterisation of their temporal variability. Equally important is a realistic assessment of water intake values for specific age groups. Only such an evaluation may provide the basis for possible remedial actions.  相似文献

We report on results of our theoretical study of magnetic field induced changes of the c-axis infrared response of bilayer cuprate superconductors using the phenomenological multilayer model involving the conductivity of the spacing layers and that of the bilayer units. For H perpendicular to the planes, the local conductivities have been expressed in terms of a two-fluid approximation--as weighted averages of the superconducting state ones and the normal state ones representing contributions of the vortex cores, the weight of the latter increasing linearly with the field. This allows us to reproduce and interpret the fast decrease with increasing H of the well known 400 cm(-1) peak (transverse plasma mode) in the c-axis conductivity, observed by LaForge and co-workers. For the local conductivities of underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-δ) with T(c)=58 K reported by Dubroka and co-workers and the fraction of the normal state (T ≈ T(c)) component given by (μ(0)H/25 T), the computed field induced changes of the reflectivity are in quantitative agreement with the data. This suggests that the response at H=0 and T ≈ T(c) is close to that at H=25 T < H(c2) and T ? T(c), in accord with theories attributing the above T(c) state to that of a superconductor lacking long-range phase coherence. Also discussed are changes of the response induced by H parallel to the CuO(2) planes.  相似文献

Body centered cubic (bcc) Fe nanoparticles were fabricated by in situ decomposition of iron fluoride films in a transmission electron microscope. Electron energy-loss near edge structure (ELNES) was used to characterize this exposure process. In particular, the L(3)/L(2) white-line intensity ratio (WLR) was used to monitor the iron valence state during exposure, and as an indicator of other properties of the iron nanoparticles. Iron nanoparticles with sizes between 2 and 20nm exhibit a constant WLR, whose value is same as that for a continuous bcc iron film, suggesting little or no dependence of the local magnetic moment or structure on the particle size. A broad but prominent peak which occurs 40eV after the L(3)-ionization threshold in the iron fluoride, is absent for a metallic iron film but reappears when the iron is converted to an oxide. Long-range ferromagnetic coupling was observed in samples densely populated with iron nanoparticles. Because there is little interaction between particles and the supporting carbon substrate, these samples provide an ideal model system for studying the influence of particle size and interparticle distance on magnetic properties.  相似文献

Hot-stage microscopy was used to characterise crystal growth at the interface between sisal fibre bundles and a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix in order to better understand the mechanical properties of sisal fibre–PLA composites. Cooling rates and crystallisation temperatures and times were varied to influence crystalline morphology at the interface. Single sisal fibre bundles were evaluated in their as received state or treated with 6 wt.% caustic soda solution for 48?h at room temperature. A microbond shear test was used to characterise the shear strength of the interface as a function of fibre surface treatment. These tests were performed on sisal fibre bundles carefully embedded in flat films of PLA supported on card mounts. Fibre bundles in a PLA matrix were cooled from 180?°C at rates from 2 to 9?°C/min and then crystallised isothermally. For as received fibre bundles uneven growth of PLA spherulites occurred at all cooling rates and crystallisation temperatures. For caustic soda treated fibres, uneven spherulitic growth was observed at crystallisation temperatures at and above 125?°C. In contrast, transcrystalline growth was observed for samples cooled to 120?°C at cooling rates from 2 to 6?°C/min and then allowed to crystallise. The microbond shear strengths of untreated and caustic soda treated fibre bundles were evaluated using Weibull statistics and the caustic soda treated fibres exhibited higher interfacial shear strengths in comparison to untreated fibres, reflecting the development of a transcrystalline layer at the fibre to matrix interface.  相似文献

The separation of diluted ethanol solutions and fermentation broths by membrane distillation was investigated. The influence of stream flow-rate on the ethanol flux was studied. An evaluation of the process conditions on the separation degree of ethanol was performed with the application of hydrophobic capillary membranes composed of polypropylene. By removing the alcohol via membrane distillation, it is possible to achieve a higher content of ethanol in the permeate than that in the broth. The enrichment coefficient amounted to 4–6.5, and decreased with an increase of the ethanol concentration in the broth. It was found that the flow-rate affects the value of the enrichment coefficient. A positive influence of carbon dioxide on the ethanol transport through the capillary membrane was observed. The evolution of CO2 bubbles from the broth increases the stream turbulence, probably enhancing the alcohol concentration in the layer adjacent to the membrane surface.  相似文献
